- DirectorJamie Jay JohnsonStarsZawe AshtonGreg McHughKimberley NixonIt's Howard's birthday, not that he's told anybody. But word gets out anyway and the housemates agree to throw him a party at Candice's behest. My personal favourite episode of this outstanding series - three separate birthday parties are organised for Howard at 28 Hartnell Avenue, prompting a few revelations and a lot of arguments. The falling-out that has seemed inevitable since the pilot episode finally appears, leaving relationships in tatters and the viewer wondering if they should laugh or cry. It just gets better and better.
- DirectorAnnie GriffinStarsZawe AshtonGreg McHughKimberley NixonThe end of the academic year is fast approaching and the housemates face some big decisions.Another episode where things fall apart, especially for poor Tony Shales, seen again in series three living in a caravan on a patch of waste ground. Completely disastrous, but definitely on the funnier side of disastrous. JP's desperate attempt to keep the housemates together as they go their separate ways, seemingly for good, lends some pathos to this episode as well.
- DirectorDavid KerrStarsZawe AshtonGreg McHughKimberley NixonJP invites the gang to stay at his country house during the Easter break, but things aren't as idyllic as they seem. Josie marks ex-fiance Dave's new wedding day in her own way, while Howard finds himself at home with Sabine. This comes in at a very close 3rd place. All of the housemates (except Howard, who will wait on the phone, on hold, for 48 hours back in Manchester) meet at JP's country house in Cornwall... drunken hilarity ensues.
- DirectorNick WoodStarsZawe AshtonGreg McHughKimberley NixonThe gang travels to London to take part in a students' protest march. There, Vod discovers the scandalous affair of Oregon with Professor Shales. And Josie and Ruth are baffled, when Kingsley admits he's been seeing both of them.Another close contender... I think this episode, centred around a real-life student protest in London in 2010, was the moment I realised that I love this show.
- DirectorNick WoodStarsZawe AshtonGreg McHughKimberley NixonJP finds out his father has serious health issues, and decides on an unconventional response. Oregon is distraught to learn that her childhood horse is dying, culminating in the revelation that she isn't called Oregon at all. While attending a screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey, JP and Oregon receive some bad news. Oregon's horse is dying, and JP's father has had another heart attack. The best moment comes when an acid-addled JP hugs Oregon's dying horse and delivers a speech that is by turns hilarious, bizarre and heartwarming.
- DirectorGordon AndersonStarsZawe AshtonGreg McHughKimberley NixonKingsley doesn't have the heart to break things off with Heather, so he decides to date both her and Josie, who is keen to move back and study pharmacology. However, there's one problem - the course tutor is Sabine.Josie and Kingsley finally get together. That alone makes this one of the best episodes, ending all the frustration and speculation that has lasted since series one... Also, Vod gets married.
- DirectorAnnie GriffinStarsZawe AshtonGreg McHughKimberley NixonMrs Professor Shales gets suspicious and assumes her husband is having an affair. Oregon resolves to break it off with Shales, but he wrongfoots her by leaving his wife and turning up on her doorstep.Dave and Josie's relationship crashes to a halt when Brian - one of the best characters on the show, who will definitely be missed - hits on her, in the most cringe-y moment of the entire series. In his final moment (we don't actually see him, but it's genius nonetheless) Brian also has a letter delivered to Howard in the middle of an exam claiming that his mother has been arrested for killing someone. To quote Howard: Well played, my friend.
- DirectorJamie Jay JohnsonStarsZawe AshtonGreg McHughKimberley NixonThere's much excitement in the house when Vod reveals her mum is coming to stay, but when she arrives she's not what anyone expected. The darkest episode of the series. Vod's mum comes to town, and what appears to be a terrible casting choice soon turns out to be an excellent decision as she hits on JP, insults everyone else and smashes stuff up. The scenes with Vod in the following episode, wherein she finds closure and a shoulder to cry on, are the icing on the cake. Not many laughs in this episode, but it's brilliant all the same.
- DirectorJamie Jay JohnsonStarsZawe AshtonGreg McHughKimberley NixonThe housemates get radical as they participate in a university sit-in organised by Oregon to demonstrate against the forced deportation of a hot Tunisian guy.The honourable mention. Oregon's best moment.
