She snaps, grabs his gun, takes his uniform, and leaves him cuffed to a tree where he's soon having a defenseless chat with a homeless man. She takes off on the cop's motorcycle and, for an afternoon, experiences a cop's life. She talks a young man out of suicide and then is plunged into violence after a friendly encounter with two "vatos." She is torn between self-protection and others' expectations. Is there any resolution for her torrent of feelings? Not too bad for an independent film but, the movie lacked any real oomph.

I could tell the actors were pushing to the nth degree, but it fails when everything is at the same level. Not that its a bad movie, because its not. The characters are engaging, especially Geoffrey Rush as the kindhearted, moral man in an cruel and ruthless world. But, things are disjointed and pop in an out without real reason, like Death's narration, which is said to be more involved in the book. I couldn't watch it without seeing and hearing the jokes that were not in this one. (Wait, I was going to make espresso!) (snirk!)
It was interesting how the filmmaker humanized the monster, and I was quite surprised how impressed I was by Elsa Lancaster's acting. Small though her part was, I still couldn't helped but to be moved by her circumstances.

Good job by Alec Guinness; I understand why he got the Oscar.

A couple of funny scenes, but overall, very annoying.

When her past catches up with her, however, she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within. This understated drama, simplistic in its structure hits upon profound events - The lead character journeys away from family and home, across an ocean to start a new life. The movie made me proud of being American, because of the opportunities and bravery shown by immigration. Sad that America is not currently being that.
It also shows a woman torn between two worlds and how much you may want to, you can't play it safe and try to return home.
