79 Metascore

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks

Votes: 704,630 | Gross: $35.06M

My boy Nicolas Winding Refn keeps lining them up and knocking them down. This is as much of a stock plot as you can get: soft-spoken stuntman moonlights as a getaway driver, falls for a married woman, and signs on for a heist that goes terribly awry. Thankfully these are not stock characters. Jealous hustand Oscar Isaac may resent Gosling for sniffing around his wife, but seems to genuinely warm to the hero. Cold as ice kingpin Albert Brooks comes across as an utter mensch. Perlman's alpha dog gangster is motivated by a surprisingly childish vindictive streak. And our laconic, dreamy hero, when cornered, lashes out with shocking violence. Action tends to be an enervating genre, in which we are made good and numb by the music of Slipknot while Jason Stathem or whoever pounds in a few skulls. It's more like dentistry than entertainment. So more like this, please.

Director: Jason Eisener | Stars: Rutger Hauer, Pasha Ebrahimi, Robb Wells, Brian Downey

Votes: 48,654 | Gross: $0.70M

This is "Machete" done right. Hauer makes a strong impression where Trejo seemed only a blank slate, and that helps hold the film together in its giddy spin from one demented set-piece to another. I confess that I was left wanting more: I was frustrated that we never found out what the deal with The Plague was, and really, maybe the whole thing could have been a little less over the top. Then again, it's called "Hobo with a Shotgun", so maybe it couldn't have worked if it were more understated. Watch it. It's fun. There is a video arcade where vagrants are murdered with bumper cars; a Tom Cruise dead-ringer who murders people with his ice skates; motorcycle-riding hellspawn; gore beyond belief; and the wrongest use of "Disco Inferno" the mind can conceive. It may be too awesome. Your head could asplode.

Director: Álex de la Iglesia | Stars: Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Carolina Bang, Manuel Tallafé

Votes: 15,233 | Gross: $0.04M

I don't think that the story here really coheres. But it is a non-stop onslaught of crazy *beep* and that is what I hope for when I'm watching a movie by de la Iglesia. Many supporting characters don't have consistent motivations, and the leads are the insane members of a love triangle. From these two categories I single out for praise the circus stuntman, who keeps enthusiastically getting on a rocket-powered motorcycle which in turn keeps flinging him into a wall, and star Carolina Bang, whose masochistic trapeze artist has a certain believabliity that her murderous clown suitors do not,

Director: Joe Wright | Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana, Vicky Krieps

Votes: 206,890 | Gross: $40.26M

Wright, I've decided, is a technically accomplished director too often indifferent to the material he's working with. He had some enthusiasm for earlier projects, but I expect that the prestige of old-timey costume drama interested him more than the story of Atonement or his inert Pride and Prejudice. Action movies are beneath this classy auteur's contempt, but behold his generosity as this wondrous polymath takes the helm of just such a project, affording us proles the chance to see it done right for a change! Well, perhaps that was the thinking. We have here a story that amounts to a lot of action movie cliches strung together without making a very coherent narrative. On top of that, we have loads and loads of quirk, and nothing like a sensible characterization. Hanna can 1) kick ass or 2) recite rote information from an encyclopedia, and the one time she lets her guard down she (impending action movie cliche!) divulges the location where she's meeting her father (immediately after (let's belabor the point!) stressing the fact that she couldn't tell the other character anything about her, because that would put the both of them in danger), and this information is just what the bad guys need in order to track her down. Cate Blanchett's cloying Southern accent is unconvincing and used only intermittently. The hippie-dippie parents of an English family that runs into Hanna think that its just another viable parenting strategy to abandon your child in the Moroccan desert. And the assassin Blanchett hires to track down Hanna had to have been her third or fourth choice, right? Because this pudgy, tracksuit-clad bumbler is hysterically unsubtle. Barging into the English kids' pup tent and awakening the younger brother of Hanna's new BFF, he doesn't say, "oh sorry, I have the wrong tent," no, he shines the flashlight in his face and intones, in scary German, "This is the Sandman. Go back to sleep."

I don't deserve to complain. I'm the idiot who wanted Outlander on a bigger budget. Lo and behold: I asked, and I received. So, *beep* blows up gooder here, thanks to the dollars of Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, but this is going to seem overly familiar even to those who didn't see Outlander, from which Cowboys and Aliens cribs an awful lot. Its a shame. When you've got a cast made up of Keith Carradine, Clancey Brown, Walton Goggins, and Harrison Ford, you ought to have a damn good western on your hands. You shouldn't have a movie that makes me wonder aloud halfway through the movie "Where the Hell is Walton Goggins?"
