- DirectorMasahiro SakuraiStarsDean HarringtonCharles MartinetNobuyuki HiyamaSmash Bros. installment for the GameCube with fast-paced, highly competitive and technical gameplay of realtime chess and hype using various Nintendo characters, with simple controls yet deep mechanics.9/10 The most enjoyable fighting game I've ever played with gameplay that is extremely advanced, extremely satisfying, and full of depth. You never come across games that last for 2 decades while still feeling very refreshing for each and every year that passes. I mean, there's a reason why people still compete in Melee tournaments at the absolute highest level. It might very well be a flawed, if not a broken, game, but that is a big part of why it is so beautiful.
- DirectorDaiki ItôStarsJun FukuyamaIkue ÔtaniMamoru MiyanoA group of high school students create a vigilante group to expose the crimes of corrupt adults but soon find themselves in the midst of a worldwide conspiracy and targeted by powerful individuals who would do anything to silence them.9.3/10 The game that introduced me to a series I never knew I needed in my life. Even though P5R has arguably the weakest writing of all the Persona games narrative-wise, the addicting gameplay alone makes up for most of its shortcomings. While I don't believe that the third semester negated most of the issues I had with vanilla P5 narratively, and in fact, only brought upon even more issues, it still proved to be an excellent addition and a much-needed one at that. Despite its flaws though, P5R is still one of my favorite experiences in not just gaming, but in life. I will forever cherish the memories I've made with this game and this franchise as a whole.
- DirectorDaiki ItôValerie AremTeppei KobayashiStarsDaisuke NamikawaShôtarô MorikuboYui HorieA group of high school students discover a hidden TV world called 'The Midnight Channel', an alternate reality infested with shadows that is being used to commit murder. After awakening to their Personas, the group decides to investigate.9/10 Scooby Doo: The Game (̶A̶K̶A̶ J̶o̶j̶o̶ P̶a̶r̶t̶ 4̶ R̶i̶p̶-̶O̶f̶f̶)̶. It's got its shortcomings, like with every Persona game, but Persona 4 Golden has had a bigger impact on me than even P5 and P3 combined. I've never been more invested in its characters, and I sure as hell have never loved a Persona game the same way I did with this one. While I'm not exactly a fan of some of its writing, as well as a few gameplay additions such as Marie and the Hollow Forest, it isn't like they ruined the game for me either. On top of that, Persona 4 just feels right at home and is so god damn relatable that it's actually kind of mind-boggling. By the way, Adachi is bae!
- DirectorAmy HennigBruce StraleyStarsNolan NorthEmily RoseClaudia BlackAfter being tracked down by Harry Flynn, Nathan Drake goes on a quest for Marco Polo's lost fleet. However when things take an unexpected turn for the worst, Drake must rely on those closest to him in order to find the Cintomani Stone.9.5/10 Some of the most fun I've ever had playing a game, especially in my earlier years of development. I remember thinking that this was just a video game in the form of a Hollywood movie, and while that might be true, it also puts them to shame, especially because of just how much better executed it is compared to your common Hollywood blockbusters anyway.
- DirectorShinji MikamiKuniomi MatsushitaStarsPaul MercierCarolyn LawrenceRino RomanoSix years after the events in Raccoon City, Leon Kennedy, now a federal agent, is sent to a rural part of Spain to rescue the U.S. President's kidnapped daughter, Ashley Graham from a sinister cult.9.4/10 Pinnacle of game design right here. Everything about the gameplay, the atmosphere, the enemies, the gunplay, and even the inventory is just nothing short of brilliant. I rarely replay the living crap out of games, but Resident Evil 4 is the only game I've replayed over 10+ times from start to finish. The gameplay is so incredibly designed and addicting that it completely makes up for its lackluster story and mediocre cast.
- StarsYoung MaylayFaizon LoveYolanda 'Yo-Yo' WhittakerCarl "CJ" Johnson, a member of the Grove Street street gang, comes home after a family tragedy to find it overtaken by crime and corruption, which he must take back before things become worse.9.1/10 Might not necessarily be the best GTA game anymore, but I loved playing this as a kid, and even after growing up, I still sometimes look back on it just to see what's up. It's a very memorable game for so many great reasons, and it is something that I will forever cherish.
- DirectorKonrad TomaszkiewiczStarsDoug CockleDenise GoughJo WyattThe monster slayer Geralt of Rivia must find his adoptive daughter who is being pursued by the Wild Hunt, and prevent the White Frost from bringing about the end of the world.9.45/10 A tad overrated, but that doesn't stop it from being one of my most favorited games, regardless. I rarely ever find games with as much passion and integrity put into them as this, and the impact it's had on modern gaming culture is undeniable. The Witcher 3 is the GTA 5 of RPGS nowadays.
- DirectorJosh SawyerStarsMatthew PerryWayne NewtonKris KristoffersonAfter surviving a bullet to the head, Courier Six traverses the post-apocalyptic Mojave desert in search of the men who wronged him, while making an impact on thousands in the process.9.2/10 The best Fallout game ever. To think that it would be this fantastic despite having less than 2 years of development... What really solidified my love for it was some of its DLC, and boy are they my all-time favorite additions to any game ever. Obsidian Entertainment will forever be GOATED just for this game alone.
- DirectorTodd HowardStarsMax von SydowChristopher PlummerJoan AllenAfter escaping execution, the last living Dragonborn must grow in strength and power to defeat the dragons that have once again begun to plague the land of Skyrim.9/10 A flawed masterpiece. Game design is great but a bit outdated, and it's also been bogged down in its RPG elements to appeal to a more casual audience. In spite of that, Skyrim is still an amazing game that has aged like fine wine. I've modded plenty of games in the past, and Skyrim is the only game I've modded to such an extent. It has only made me want to play and love it even more with each and every mod I install.
- DirectorYasuhiro AnpoKazunori KadoiStarsNick ApostolidesGenevieve BuechnerAndré PeñaIn this reimagining of the 2005 game, Leon Kennedy is sent on a mission to rescue the president's kidnapped daughter from a secluded European village where there is something terribly wrong with the locals.9.3/10 A remake that absolutely nobody asked for, yet when it came out, we all welcomed it with open arms. It's similar to the RE2 situation; either game you like more (OG or Remake) just comes down to personal preference. That being said, OG is still the superior choice, at least for me, but there's no denying how amazing this game was as well. The improvements are more than enough to satisfy as many veteran fans & newcomers as possible.
- StarsShawn FontenoNed LukeSteven OggThree very different criminals team up for a series of heists and walk into some of the most thrilling experiences in the corrupt city of Los Santos.9.35/10. The zenith of the GTA series in terms of overall gameplay and game design. Perfect game to play with/without friends and definitely something you could turn to if you're just mostly looking for fun. Mods or no mods, GTA 5 is an exceptional experience that will probably only age better over time.
- DirectorNeil DruckmannBruce StraleyStarsTroy BakerAshley JohnsonHana HayesIn a hostile, post-pandemic world, Joel and Ellie, brought together by desperate circumstances, must rely on each other to survive a brutal journey across what remains of the United States.9.4/10 The video game that rose to unprecedented peaks and proved that they could be just as excellent, if not better than movies from a story-telling perspective. It was an incredible adventure from start to finish and an utter joy to play. I genuinely believe that this game is the pinnacle of what Naughty Dog can achieve from a writing standpoint.
- DirectorNeil DruckmannBruce StraleyStarsNolan NorthTroy BakerRichard McGonagleThrown back into the dangerous underworld he'd tried to leave behind, Nathan Drake must decide what he's willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.9.35/10 My 2nd favorite Uncharted Game ever and a perfect closure to Nathan Drake's story. It is very replayable and super satisfying to play. It has probably the best story/writing out of the Uncharted games and is the only Uncharted game that I cherish more than any of the other entries that isn't Uncharted 2.
- StarsAlain AouadThomas Balou MartinTony CurranA first person shooter game depicting death matches between terrorists and counter-terrorists.8.6/10. Greatest competitive FPS game of all-time. The mechanics for the CS series in general have just aged very well, and CSGO especially does an excellent job at showing just how wonderful they can be when executed brilliantly. It is a game that is already very fun to watch pros playing while being even more fun to play by yourself.
- DirectorAgnes LarssonStarsPierre CoffinKatie CrownCW21Welcome to the world of Minecraft where you can build, brew potions, enchant your armor and tools and adventure other biomes. Visit the Nether, or even defeat the Ender Dragon in the End.9/10. Pretty much everyone's favorite childhood game. Despite having its fair share of ups and downs, Minecraft is nevertheless an awesomely creative, fun and extremely unique sandbox game that will likely carry a legacy that lasts for generations. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more nostalgic and memorable game that isn't Minecraft.
- DirectorKatsura HashinoYukio TakatsuStarsAkira IshidaMegumi ToyoguchiRie TanakaA new student arrives at a school full of monsters that attack at night. A team of Persona users recruit him to help battle alongside them to rid the monsters for good.8.5/10. Ahh... Depression: The Game. In spite of how emo and edgy it is, Persona 3 is still one of the most celebrated Persona games in the franchise and for good reason. Sadly, the game is very underwhelming from a narrative standpoint, at least until the final arc, and the gameplay is extremely dated to the point of lacking replay value. Main villains are also complete ass. Thankfully, it at least contains my favorite overall soundtrack, or should I say, one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all-time. I personally recommend that every Persona fan try this game out at least once, even if it's only through the inferior Portable/Vanilla versions.
- DirectorMasahiro SakuraiStarsJaz AdamsRikako AikawaJustin AnselmiSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch brings back every fighter in the history of the series, adds newcomers and over 100 stages, and introduces a new adventure mode called "World of Light''.8.7/10. Offers the largest and most diverse cast of all the Smash games, as well as having possibly the hypest character reveals. Whether it's meant to be played as a party game or as a competitive game, Smash Ultimate is the ultimate game for anyone who considers themselves a Smash Bros. fan. Even with its seemingly "perfect" but simultaneously wacky buffer system, and its terrible online system, as well as having its fair share of competitive gimmicks, Smash Ultimate is still a very fun and satisfying game and is my 2nd favorite installment in the Smash Bros. series.
- DirectorToby FoxStarsBill FagerbakkeToby FoxWillard ScottEnter the Underground, a massive subterranean cave where monsters who once lived harmoniously with humans on the surface have been banished after losing a war with humanity.8.75/10. An extremely original and surprisingly simple game that perfectly utilizes its mechanics to make for a fantastic experience. Undertale is a brilliant game that despite its retro and outdated style, is still somehow such a popular game that appeals to virtually people of all ages, hence its divisive fanbase. The soundtrack is also GOATED.
- DirectorHideaki ItsunoStarsAdam D. ClarkReuben LangdonLarry LeongA young Dante is opening up his Merc Agency when he receives a challenge from his twin brother Vergil. The following events exponentially shape his future and make for one hell of a party.8.6/10. One of the greatest video game prequels of all-time and my personal favorite of the DMC series. I especially love the brotherly relationship between Dante and his brother Vergil, as well as Dante's personal origins, even if it doesn't necessarily delve that deeply into his backstory. Amazing gameplay, amazing enemies and bosses, and just all-around a great time in general. I believe this is the best of what the DMC franchise has to offer in terms of stylistic, brutal fun.
- DirectorErik JohnsonStarsChad L. ColemanHugh DillonEric LadinFour new survivors must make their way across the American South while surviving a zombie apocalypse.8.8/10. Most addicting zombie game ever. Seriously, it's not everyday you come across games that are this painstakingly simple and yet so replayable. Valve in general are just gods at making FPS games, no matter the genre.
- DirectorCory BarlogStarsChristopher JudgeSunny SuljicJeremy DaviesAfter wiping out the gods of Mount Olympus, Kratos moves on to the frigid lands of Scandinavia, where he and his son must embark on an odyssey across a dangerous world of gods and monsters.9.25/10. Best God of War game without a shadow of a doubt. Story-telling and character writing is raised to its absolute highest peak with this one, and the game itself is a mesmerizing tale that really kept me glued from start to finish. Truly a brilliant game.
- DirectorSean AinsworthNick HermanDennis LenartStarsDave FennoyMelissa HutchisonNick HermanIn a world devastated by the undead, a convicted criminal is given a second chance at life when he comes across a little girl named Clementine.9/10. An extremely emotional video game and an all-time classic. This game was like watching a brilliant TV show unfold before my very eyes, with the only major difference being the fact that I could choose what to do to shift the story. This is almost like a precursor to TLOU as well as being the best zombie game in general that isn't TLOU either.
- DirectorShinji MikamiStarsJoe WhyteHeidi Anderson-SwanEd SmaronRemake of the first game in which the RPD squad, Jill and Chris, are forced to flee into a mysterious mansion. Featuring new gameplay mechanics, revised puzzles, additional explorable areas, a revised script, and new story details.8.8/10. Greatest video game remake of all-time (along with Black Mesa). Completely improves upon the original in every way possible, with one of its most notable improvements being the "voice acting". Resident Evil (2002) encapsulates everything that made the series stand out in the first place and gives us fans what I like to consider the ultimate survival horror experience.
- DirectorRaphael ColantonioHarvey SmithStarsSusan SarandonLena HeadeyCarrie FisherAfter being framed for the murder of the Empress he swore to protect, a once trusted bodyguard with supernatural abilities is forced to become a masked assassin in order to seek revenge on those who conspired against him.8.25/10. Low-key brilliant for a stealth game. Dishonored has great lore, top tier world-building, impressive mechanics, great replay value, and don't even get me started on its DLC. It's a great game that has only aged gracefully and beautifully.
- DirectorNate FoxSean StanekStarsEric LadinCaleb MoodyDawn OlivieriAfter the Beast destroys Empire City, Cole MacGrath flees to the city of New Marais to search for a scientist, who could upgrade his powers.8/10. Massively underrated game. A nearly perfect sequel to Infamous. Really fucking good from a narrative standpoint, and the Karma system, as well as the UGC content made for amazing replayability. I think the only thing that would make this game even better for me is if it had some sort of remake or even an HD remaster.
- DirectorSylvain BernardStarsRoger Craig SmithKristen BellNolan NorthDesmond Miles continues to travel the memories of Ezio Auditore, bringing him to turn-of-the-century Rome with Ezio rebuilding the assassin order to bring down the tyrannical Borgia rule.8.3/10. My personal favorite AC game. It might not have been the best story-wise, at least when compared to AC II, but I really did love the gameplay improvements it had over AC II. It made for a more complete and just all-around an amazing gameplay experience.
- DirectorYasuhiro AnpoKazunori KadoiStarsNick ApostolidesStephanie PaniselloJolene AndersenRe-imagining of Resident Evil 2 (1998), with a third-person over-the-shoulder view, new details, rearranged and new areas, no more loading screen doors, new puzzle solving opportunities, a gunpowder crafting mechanic and more.8.5/10. Not as great of a remake as Resident Evil (2002). Regardless, still very impressive. I definitely preferred the updated gameplay mechanics in this one, as well as the superior atmosphere and game design, and I think it did a better job with Ada and Sherry's character (even if not by much). Also, let's not forget about Mr X and his footsteps. He made an already great game even better.
- StarsTôru ÔkawaYûji KishiMitsuo IwataFight your way through ten opponents and character-specific rivals before facing the final boss to become the ultimate street fighter.8.7/10. Best street fighter game, in my opinion. It has my favorite roster, soundtrack, gameplay, and my favorite final boss in Gill. This is one of the greatest fighting games of all time and for good reason.
- DirectorHideki KamiyaStarsPaul HaddadAlyson CourtSally CahillTwo months after the mansion events, the deadly T-virus escapes into the streets of Raccoon City. Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield find the police office left abandoned. In an underground facility the story of Umbrella Corp. gets unfolded.8.5/10. Holds up very well compared to its Remake counterpart, as opposed to its predecessor. There are also a few elements from this version that I preferred over the remake as well. With that being said, both games are absolutely fantastic and are easily the kings of survival-horror video games.
- DirectorAdam EngelsCarlos MonteroStarsAdam DraveanCris MertensMichael TsarouhasScientist Gordon Freeman navigates through the titular research facility in New Mexico after a botched experiment.9/10. Fan-made remake of Half-Life. Way up there amongst other remakes like Resident Evil (2002) as being arguably the greatest video game remake ever. It is in my opinion, a much more fun and immersive experience than any of the other Half-Life games due to it finding a sort of equilibrium between the 2 original games in terms of overall game design. Major props as to how they revamped Xen as well. I'll never forget about those brilliantly structured final levels.
- DirectorSylvain BernardShea WagemanStarsRoger Craig SmithKristen BellNolan NorthDesmond Miles is trained to become a modern-day Assassin through the resurrected memories of ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who uncovers a massive Templar conspiracy in Renaissance Italy leading to the new Pope.8.7/10. The peak of the Assassin's Creed franchise. It balances story-telling, gameplay, and world-building perfectly and tells an extremely captivating tale with characters that you can't help but feel for and become attached to. There's also no better protagonist in the series than Ezio Auditore da Firenze. This is the Assassin's Creed game that still has yet to be surpassed, even after a decade, and will likely never be.
- DirectorAmy HennigJustin RichmondStarsNolan NorthRichard McGonagleEmily RoseTreasure hunter Nathan Drake embarks on a quest in search of the Atlantis of the Sands while battling an ancient, sinister organization.8.5/10. More or less the same as Uncharted 2 but with somewhat inferior writing. A few areas within the game were also a bit squandered in terms of potential, but the game never once felt inadequate or super underwhelming in any way. It's still an amazing game with a crap ton of memorable experiences, as well as being tremendously fun and epic all-around.
- DirectorDave AnthonyStarsJames C. BurnsEmmanuelle ChriquiIce CubeFormer Marine Captain and CIA operative Alex Mason, upon interrogation by an unknown party, recounts his violent experiences with the Bay of Pigs, a radical Soviet conspiracy, and the Vietnam war.8.7/10. Definitely the most well-balanced of all the Black Ops games. It's the only game where I felt that its zombies, campaign and multiplayer were at least almost equally as good/fun. It's just a great game in general and my favorite CoD game of the franchise.
- DirectorYasuhiro AnpoKenichi UedaStarsRoger Craig SmithEva La DareD.C. DouglasSent in by the BSAA, Chris Redfield has a new mission. It takes him into South Africa where he encounters a new horror and relives an old past.8/10. One of the very first video games that I became addicted to. It might be pretty damn flawed and highly controversial for a Resident Evil game, but it really is a great game to play, especially with a friend. It is immensely satisfying... can be uber fun at times... it can even sometimes terrify the shit out of you, and it also serves as the best conclusion to Wesker's story, as immortal as he is (or was hahahaha).
- DirectorShigeru MiyamotoA plumber named Mario and his brother Luigi travel through the Mushroom Kingdom to save the princess from the evil Bowser.9/10. The game that saved the American video game industry from its imminent death and gave rise to a legendary franchise and many other franchises to come. It's a monument in video game history and has only aged flawlessly. Seriously, how many classical games nowadays have so many people still mentioning them for a multitude of reasons? Also, if there's one thing (out of many) to thank the speedrunning community for, it's for keeping this game alive and more popular than ever.
- DirectorTatsuya MarutaniStarsMegumi OgataMakiko ÔmotoTakahiro Sakurai15 elite high school students are trapped in school and forced to participate in a sadistic killing game - Either remain in confinement forever or murder someone without being detected in order to escape, but risk death if they are caught.8.4/10. Persona 4 meets Phoenix Wright... and Squid Game. It's a shame that such an original game flew under the radar. Very strong narratively, with grounded characters and a haunting atmosphere that's sure to make you feel claustrophobic. They need to make more games like this for real.
- DirectorNick James PearceStarsJoe Cliff ThompsonDennis KleinmanAndrew GolderDiscover the ruins of an ancient underground city, travel 2000 years into the past, and unravel the mystery of who destroyed it by cleverly exploiting the power to wind back time.8.25/10 Very well-crafted. The Forgotten City is a game with superb writing, combining good story telling with captivating characters that you actually end up liking. It's 100x better than whatever junk Bethesda spews out nowadays, which is rather shameful. It felt like reading something out of a book or a tale, and a rather memorable one at that. Kudos to the game developers for doing such an excellent job at making a standalone game out of what was once a mod for an also great game (flawed as that one was).
- DirectorJason WestStarsLance HenriksenKeith DavidBarry PepperA massacre at a Russian airport leads to a war between Russia and the United States. Meanwhile, a Task Force is sent to find the perpetrators and bring the bloodshed to an end.8.75/10. Even without nostalgia glasses, MW2 is an amazing game that was made around the time when its developers still had a shred of dignity and passion. Seriously, I sometimes still can't believe the balls they had when actually making this game's campaign. This game will forever be GOATED.
- DirectorMasahiro SakuraiStarsJason AdkinsIsabella ArevaloLaura BaileyDuke it out in the fourth entry of the Super Smash Bros. series. New features are an eight player-mode, support for Nintendo's Amiibos, custom Miis as playable fighters, post-release DLC and more.8.5/10. Almost could've been a 9/10 game if only it weren't for one character. Smh. Even so, Smash 4 is an all-time classic. It was super fun to watch at the highest level of competition and was just a great game to play and look forward to getting better at. I also feel like it was the most well-balanced Smash game between being a great game for casuals and a great game competitively.
- DirectorDan SalvatoStarsJillian AshcraftThe Character is a member of the literature club, along with four girls. In each chapter, the protagonist will create a poem based around twenty words selected by the player, which the girls will comment on and compare to previous poems.8.5/10. Amazing visual novel that is somehow even better through mods. While the game does get a bit too edgy at times, I gotta admit that Don Salvato is low-key a genius, and I can't help but feel that he did such a fantastic job at designing this game. I was genuinely impressed at how well this game managed to surprise the shit out me despite how simple it all was.
- StarsHiroki TakahashiYûji KishiReuben LangdonUpdate for "Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (2010)" that introduces six new stages and a different announcer. It also adds five new characters: Rolento, Elena, Hugo and Poison and introduces Decapre, a member of M. Bison's Dolls as a playable character.7.5/10. Probably my 2nd most favorite Street Fighter game, and I think this is where the series really peaks in terms of how well fleshed-out its mechanics are. It was really fun to watch back when people were still playing it competitively, and I genuinely enjoyed my time with it and still sometimes go back to it just for its mesmerizing gameplay.
- DirectorGenyo TakedaLittle Mac, a 17-year-old fighter from the Bronx, ranked number three in the minor circuit, works his way up through the rankings so that he can challenge Mike Tyson, Kid Dynamite, in a dream fight.8/10. Very clever and highly rewarding game. This game does such a fantastic job at conveying the feeling of satisfaction, especially after you beat a boss you thought was previously unbeatable. It's a game that was way ahead of its time and is undeniably one of the most charming video games I've ever played.
