- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaMark HamillRey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order. This movie has become pretty controversial. About half of fans claim it's amazing and the other half claim it's lame. I'm with the former. I loved this movie. It was very original and intriguing and I love all of the character development. The stakes are also very high in this movie to the point where the Resistance is losing.
- DirectorLee UnkrichAdrian MolinaStarsAnthony GonzalezGael García BernalBenjamin BrattAspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer. This movie was a bit cliche but outside of that, this is one of Pixar's masterpieces. The animation is gorgeous, the themes are touching, the characters are endearing and well developed, the music is lovely and while it is funny, it's also very emotional when it needs to be.
- DirectorBill CondonStarsEmma WatsonDan StevensLuke EvansA selfish Prince is cursed to become a monster for the rest of his life, unless he learns to fall in love with a beautiful young woman he keeps prisoner.Emma Watson's unnecessary autotune was the only thing less than great in this film. It looks gorgeous, has great new song and covers of the old songs, and nice updates to the story.
- DirectorJayson ThiessenStarsEmily BluntKristin ChenowethLiev SchreiberAfter a dark force conquers Canterlot, the Mane 6 embark on an unforgettable journey beyond Equestria where they meet new friends and exciting challenges on a quest to use the magic of friendship to save their homeland.I love this show so seeing a fully pony movie on the big screen with stunning, high budget animation, great worldbuilding and likeable new characters was a treat.
- DirectorChris McKayStarsWill ArnettMichael CeraRosario DawsonA cooler-than-ever Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick. This movie is best at being hilarious and creative but it's weaker when it tries to be slow and emotional. It does that okay (and even has some surprisingly poignant lines) but the great comedy and animation are the highlight of this movie.
- DirectorBrian FeeStarsOwen WilsonCristela AlonzoChris CooperLightning McQueen sets out to prove to a new generation of racers that he's still the best race car in the world.I like the other two Cars movies more than most people and this one is easily my favorite. It had the best story, character, comedy, and heart.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaThe Guardians struggle to keep together as a team while dealing with their personal family issues, notably Star-Lord's encounter with his father, the ambitious celestial being Ego.In my opinion, this movie is funnier and more heartfelt than the first.
- DirectorCharlie BeanPaul FisherBob LoganStarsJackie ChanDave FrancoFred ArmisenShunned by everyone for being the son of an evil warlord, a teenager seeks to defeat him with the help of his fellow ninjas.I had a lot of fun with this movie despite my brother's constant rants about how inaccurate it is. The humor was pretty consistent, the story is entertaining (if cliche at times), and it's heart is in the right place. It does the emotional stuff better than LEGO Batman but that one is funnier.
- DirectorKelly AsburyStarsDemi LovatoRainn WilsonJoe ManganielloA mysterious map sets Smurfette and her friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting race through the Forbidden Forest, leading to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history.I went in to this movie dreading it because of my great dislike of Sony Pictures animation but I ended up getting some great animation, legitimately funny comedy and some likeable characters.
- DirectorJeff CalhounBrett SullivanStarsJeremy JordanKara LindsayBen FankhauserFilmed live on stage at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, CA, this is a not-to-be-missed high energy show starring Original Broadway cast members.Cliche for sure but I really liked the music and characters in this.
- DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsGal GadotChris PineRobin WrightWhen a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny. This movie reminded me a little too much of Captain America but it was a well-done war movie with a likeable main character and awesome action.
