- DirectorChun-hsiu HungThe fate of horseshoe crabs, a 200-million-year-old species, today clearly rests with humans--a species less than one in a thousand their own age. The ideological impasse between Nationalists on Taiwan and Communists on Mainland China during much of latter twentieth century imposed more than 4 decades of martial rule on front line islands such as Kin-men. Kin-men's martial controls during this period decisively saved the horseshoe crab habitats and preserved the synergy between Kin-men fishermen and their sea. Today, the former enemies are now business partner and Kin-men is being retooled for tourism and investment. - DirectorJesus Garces LambertStarsJohn DickieIn the past decade, much has been said about the Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal. Yet with Pope Francis, we have all thought that the crisis was over, that the church had learned its lesson. What we have found out instead, is rather shocking. In the 3 years that he has sat on St Peter's throne, Pope Francis has done very little about the priests who abuse children and the bishops who cover up their abuses: 2 pedophile priests out of 3 are still in the clergy, the special tribunal he announced does not exist and bishops are still instructed to not report abuses to the authorities. - DirectorMarjolaine GrappeNorth Korea has covertly developed a weapon whose secret the superpowers believed they alone possessed: the nuclear bomb. How has this country, ostracized by the international community and one of the world's poorest nations, managed to build up such an arsenal? Five years of investigation will reveal, clearly and simply, the secrets behind the financing of North Korea's nuclear weapons. A film revolving around the testimonies of the men and women at the heart of the system: the financier of the regime, the diplomat as well as the 'little hands', these North Korean workers sent abroad, who make the regime between 1,2 and 2,3 billion euros a year (according to UN estimates). Each year Pyongyang sends tens of thousands of North Korean workers outside the borders of the 'Hermit state', and rents them out to more than 40 countries across the world where they will be working in very difficult conditions, in isolation, permanently monitored by agents of the state in order to prevent them making contact with the outside or defecting. First-hand accounts of men and women who have played a role in this well-oiled system are extremely rare because defections are rare. Those who flee not only put their lives at risk but those of their families back home. This documentary reveals an ongoing tragedy, that of the Dictator's Men working in the wings to bring cash into the country at all costs and ensure the regime's survival.
- DirectorMarjolaine GrappeIn China, they are called "heihaizi", literally "black child", and are hidden. They are not allowed to go to school, apply for a job, open a bank account or even board a train. Their "crime": being a second-born child in the country of the One-Child policy. Thirty years after the implementation of population control, the policy is becoming more flexible, with an increasing number of exceptions, but China does not forgive children born "in excess". There are allegedly 13 million of them. It is a taboo subject. What sort of a life awaits these children who were denied the right to be born? What recourse do they have? Why are they being cast aside from society when the issue of demographics in China has changed? After a lengthy investigation, certain "heihaizi" agreed to talk. They live anonymously in Beijing, Shenzhen and in remote villages, where family planning is still tightly controlled, for the purpose of preventing illegal births and blackmailing guilty families for being "too large".
