Summary: The worst movie ever made
or at least the worst I have ever seen. Personally, I think it even exceeds the legendary Plan 9 in sheer ineptness. My favorite scene is the one where the "robot" kidnaps the girl. He tries to tie her up, but the gorilla suit fingers are too awkward, so he punches her in the jaw to make her pass out. In the next scene, she is neatly tied up. I guess they didn't want to waste any film they had already shot, so they didn't cut from the monster beginning to tie her up to her being tied up. If you like baaaad movies, Robot Monster is a must.

Summary: Baaad Fun
Killer Shrews is bad, the script is bad, the acting is bad and the production values are very bad. The "killer shrews" are dogs. The dogs are wearing collars with what looked liked seaweed attached. The shews alone make it worth watching. Add to that all the other "Z" movie elements, and you have a classic turkey. While is does not sink to the subterranean levels of Plan 9 or Robot Monsters, it is still a must see for all loyal turkey fans. Try to catch it at a turkey film fest near you. Those shrews really do deserve to be seen on a full sized theater screen.

Summary: Remembered fondly after 40+ years
I saw this movie once - over 40 years ago - and I still remember it very well. Even as a kid, very few movie really scared me, but this one did. The resident mad scientist does something that lets in lots of bad cosmic rays and the local insects become giants. The school is a one room affair set in the middle of a forest. The giant insects attack the school trapping the teacher & the kids. Most horror movie monsters looked hokey - but the monsters in this were extreme close-ups of real insects. It wasn't until Alien that I saw a movie monster as scary as those giant bugs.

Summary: I am ashamed of myself for enjoying this movie
I must be getting corrupted in my old age. Everything about this movie offended me - the language, the rotten characters (the characters, not the actors), the excessive violence and nauseating gore. It was also trashy with no redeeming social virtues. I don't know why, but I really enjoyed it. It was funny and scary (very scary) and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was watching it. I think it must be somewhere in the Robert Rodriguez touch. I have trouble with Tarantino (I really didn't like Pulp Fiction, even it is one of the beat movies ever made.) Just make sure you don't let any kids or really sensitive people watch it - they'll have nightmares for 6 months. But if you've got a strong stomach - enjoy.

Summary: Beautiful fantasy
I love to read fantasy & I have been reading it since The Lord of the Rings back in the late 60's. However, good sword & sorcery movies did not exit until Ladyhawke. (If anyone knows of any before '85 I would be happy to hear the titles.) All the earlier sword & sorcery movies were mostly kid movies or male fantasy (Steve Reeves types with lots of buxom & pouty Italian ladies in short skirts). Ladyhawke is a movie about adults for adults. It is far from perfect. The music is bad & Matthew Broderick's Mouse grates. But Michelle Pfeiffer is luminous & loyal and Rutger Hauer is handsome & gallant. The story is from the true literary fantasy tradition. John Wood as the Bishop of Aquila is excellent. He is the the evil sorcerer caught in his own web of corruption & lust. Ladyhawke even has the look of a beautiful fantasy with beautiful scenery, sets, costumes and especially, beautiful animals. Most sword & sorcery fantasies have animals, often magical, as integrel to the plot. I have seen this movie many times & it is just as beautiful & magical the last time as it was the first.

Summary: A Lovely Ghost Story
The Univited is a lovely and romantic ghost story. I saw it on TV when I was quite young and I loved it. When I had a chance to see it again as an adult, I was afraid I might be disappointed. I was not disappointed in the least. As an adult, I think I appreciated more than I had as a child.
It has all the elements of a good English ghost story: a large spooky house, a modern romance and a ghost with some unusual and scary manifestations. Ray Milland is the handsome hero and Gail Russell is the lovely young lady who seems to attract considerable attention from the ghost.
One of the elements that I liked best about the movie was the music, the song, Stella by Starlight. It is a hauntingly beautiful song, but very rarely heard. If you have seen the Jerry Lewis in The Nutty Professor, you have heard the song: Jerry sings it to Stella Stevens.
If you enjoy a good romantic ghost story, please see The Uninvited.

Summary: Gets better every time I see it
I am just going to add my voice to the chorus of praise for this movie. It is as near to being perfect as any I have ever seen. I will not say that it is much better than Alien - which is just about near to being perfect also. But I do love all the characters in this movie. I have rarely seen a movie where all the characters were so well developed. Even most serious dramas seldom develops each character so completely. None of these characters are stereotypes even Paul Reiser as Burke, although the slimy company/government man villain is a prerequisite in disaster type movies. I would almost say that my favorite is Michael Beihn as Hicks, just because I really like his work & consider him to be underrated. But I also really like Lance Henriksen as Bishop, William Hope as Lt. Gorman, Bill Paxton as Hudson, and of course, Jenette Goldstein as Vasquez. I really liked all of these characters. I cared about their lives & deaths. The final scene for Gorman & Vasquez still chokes me up after seeing it many times.
I am not ignoring Sigourney Weaver or Carrie Henn. Ripley is the template for the modern action heroine. In the 24 years since Alien, few have been able to measure up to Sigourney Weaver's Ripley. Even in Alien 3 & 4, Ripley was still powerful, despite the 3ed rate quality of the movies. As for Carrie Henn as Newt, she was the emotional heart of Aliens. Caneron's ability to develop well rounded characters does not detract from his ability to create great action scenes or to scare the audience out of a several years of growth.

Summary: Entertaining and funny
I do not understand the furor this movie created. It is far far from the worst scifi I've seen in the past few years. And I know the science is all wrong - who cares? If the science actually mattered, the only things we could watch would be documentaries on Discovery and PBS!
Armageddon, like most Bruce Willis action movies is funny. It is very very funny, especially Steve Buscemi. Rockhound is as funny as any of his off-beat characters in Tarantino or Rodriguez movies. Peter Stormare is excellent as the space happy Russian cosmonaut. Bruce Willis is as always, wry and dry. He has a splendid talent for comedy that isn't always appreciated.
I'm not very knowledgeable on special effects, but the asteroid itself becomes a sinister presence in the movie. While I realize that no asteroid ever seen looked like that vision of hell, I don't care.
So, if you want to see a fun scifi, watch Armageddon. Forget the carping. Enjoy.

Summary: This is a FUN movie
Everyone trashes this movie, but I thought it was good. I've always enjoyed creature features with large reptiles eating cities and Godzilla does does it very well.
If you want profound and serious, watch something else. If you want a "great" movie, watch something else. But if you want to spend a couple hours watching something FUN with no serious side effects, watch Godzilla. Bring in the kids, load up on popcorn and enjoy.

Summary: Creepiest scene in any movie ever made
This is a truly great horror film. In fact, it is a truly great movie in any genre. Julie Harris is a great actress (I'm using great too much, but everything about it is great). The scene with Julie Harris in bed talking to Claire Bloom, she thinks, is the creepiest scene I have ever seen. The longer it went on the creepier I felt. I could hardly stand to sit and watch it. And all without a drop of blood. It is truly a class act.

Summary: Fun special effects
The '99 version of The Haunting is not nearly as good as the older version with Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. That was true classic psychological horror. The new version, however, does have a great House. Hill House itself is the star of this movie. It may be that people truly knowledgeable in special effects might not think so, but to me, just watching the house was enough. I enjoy special effects that are not blood and guts. I can't even begin to describe all the things the house does, and anyway, I would not like to spoil it for someone who has yet to see The Haunting. If you like really wild special effects, watch The Haunting, and I hope you aren't disappointed.

Summary: Not great, but not bad
I've seen this movie more than once. It isn't the greatest scifi flick I've every seen, but it is not a bad movie. The acting is good and the characters are more "real" than most in low budget sci fi. (At least it isn't full of dumb bimbos like so many other low budget scifi.) I especially like Elizabeth Pena. She is a good actress and she does worried single mother as well as any and better than some.
Don't let the nay sayers run you off. See it for yourself and judge it for yourself.
