- Clint Emer is a Digital Undertaker struggling to make ends meet in a futuristic landscape. She works for the government, disposing of the data of the recently deceased, content with her solitary routine. She goes from case to case, bottle to bottle, numbing herself to the loneliness she cultivates and the seething disapproval of her ageing, macho father. Clint encounters a beautiful and mysterious woman at her local dive and they hit it off despite Clint's best efforts. The next morning the other woman has disappeared along with Clint's Key; the device that lets her backdoor access other people's data. She has less than 24 hours to get it back. A facial recognition search ID's the woman as Nell Merck, the wife of flamboyant encryption mogul Abel Merck, one of Clint's recent cases. She tracks Nell to AbelTech, where she is ejected by Abel's business partner, the charismatic and possessive Casey Henton. Clint follows the digital breadcrumbs to Nell's home, an opulent state-of-the-art mansion where Nell conducts research and monitors her own rare heart condition. They strike a tenuous deal: Nell will return Clint's Key in exchange for information. Nell reveals that her husband's digital death certificate was filed hours before his body was actually discovered - impossible without interference from the Undertakers. Together, they comb through Abel's digital footprint and uncover a connection to the local syndicate, the Hanta, a wetware-adapted gang formed to hunt the Yakuza. Clint visits black market data dealer Kimaris, where she trades Undertaker secrets for a gun before meeting with Hanta boss Tsekano Kanno. In the exclusive "Crying Room" of Kanno's futuristic nightclub, Clint learns that Abel had a lucrative deal with the Hanta for backdoor encryption access. And that the Hanta had been hired to protect Nell - but from what? Returning to Nell's house Clint finds Nell and Casey in a heated argument about AbelTech's future. Casey leaves in a huff and immediately after Clint and Nell discover a body in Nell's car. Nell swears it's her husband, although his appearance has been drastically altered. When a bio-ware tracker in the body activates, they must evade the authorities to avoid being implicated in the murder. In desperation, Clint escorts Nell to Kimaris's back alley shop where Kimaris confirms Abel's identity. Clint agrees to retrieve information encrypted in Abel's Dark Box, a digital vault at the Undertaker HQ, in exchange for the disposal of the body. Feeling betrayed by Clint's callous approach to her husband's death, Nell storms out. Kimaris makes veiled threats against Nell and Clint's father, sending one of her men to "look out for" Nell while Clint is on her mission. When Clint returns home, she finds Kanno's enforcers waiting for her. They offer financial security and protection from Kimaris's killers if she turns over the content of the Dark Box to them. They give her a drive which will act as a homing beacon she can use to set up the exchange. Inside the UHQ, Clint encounters her talkative old friend Charlie, who queries her about her past interpersonal failures and teases her about not being a "Lifer," a full-time resident of the Undertaker community. While a shaken Clint is illicitly transferring the Dark Box, she stumbles upon information that Nell's heart is the core of Abeltech's encryption technology, and she could be in danger. With Charlie's help, Clint eludes Kimaris's hitmen and flees to her father to plead for help, but is turned away. Instead, the night nurse offers her a place to hide overnight in the back room of the retirement home. The next morning, Clint realizes she's being followed and corners her stalker at a diner. The man turns out to be a PI hired by Abel to keep tabs on Nell, but when Clint attempts to play tough and presses him at gunpoint for more information, the PI turns the tables and escapes. Knowing Nell is in danger, Clint returns to Nell's house and apologizes for her earlier behaviour. Nell forgives her, and they go to AbelTech to gather evidence about Nell's unwitting connection to Abeltech's encryption software, where they are discovered by Casey. As they argue about Casey's intentions towards Nell and the company, Kimaris and her enforcers arrive to seize the Dark Box's contents. As Kimaris tortures Casey for information, Clint triggers the homing beacon. Soon Kanno arrives with the Hanta, forcing a stand-off. It's revealed that the two are siblings and at one time were vying for leadership of the Hanta, now competing for Abel's secret tech. With the room on a knife's edge, Nell steals Clint's gun and shoots herself, triggering her own bio-ware tracker and alerting the authorities. Clint must strike one last deal, consigning herself to Kimaris' services in exchange for her life and Casey's. In the end, Clint returns to her life with a new appreciation for interpersonal connections and an eye toward the future. In a world of ones and zeros, the only thing you can really rely on is human emotion - and when has that ever been a good bet?
