- The Last 800 Meters takes a look at the fast disappearing Peranakan culture in Kampung Cina, Terengannu, Malaysia. Kampung Cina is 800 meters long, and is considered one of the most endangered cities in the world by the World Monument Watch. Its unique Peranakan culture and heritage is threatened with extinction as Kuala Terengannu, Malaysia moves towards being a modern city. This film explores the unique culture and heritage of this once thriving trading post in the Malay Archipelago. Kampung Cina holds a treasure trove of generations of family enterprises and a unique Chinese culture developed over 3 centuries. Globalization and rapid socio-economic change has exerted complex pressure on Kampung Cina, which has led to a transforming culture through assimilation to a more dominant way of life. This film was born as a response to the urgent need to document what is left of Kampung Cina's Peranakan culture and heritage, to serve as the ultimate documentation of a legacy bequeathed by its forefathers.
