- Saeba Ryo is a private detective and gun-for-hire who acts as the arbiter of justice. He is an urban bounty hunter out for good not exclusively using or deploying noble tactics. His partner is Makimura Kaori, a woman who dies and has her heart transplanted to another woman, Xiang Ying. It is the latter who comes to Ryo now.
- Mochizuki Kohei married Maria, the beautiful and talented daughter of a wealthy family. He quit his job at a medium-sized advertising agency to run a cafe and appears to have everything going well with him. - On September 9th, the day of the Katakai Fireworks Festival, high school student Hana comes home from the hospital after six months of treatment for leukemia. She then discovers that her older brother Taro has become a hikikomori (social recluse). Taro used to be tender, smart and proud of his younger sister, but now he even turns his back on her and stays in his room. Her parents act like there is nothing wrong with him. Later that evening, Hana attends the Katakai Fireworks Festival and observes the town's youth group happily planning for next year's event. She decides to get Taro involved with the group in an effort to bring him out of his shell. Hana drags Taro out of his room and to the youth group office. Unfortunately, Taro is not accepted as a member. Hana, nevertheless, is determined to get Taro back into society and helps him find a part-time job as a paper boy and into the adult meetings for the Katakai Fireworks Festival. With Hana's help Taro slowly opens up to the world again. Then, with winter approaching, Hana has a relapse with her leukemia. Taro comes to the hospital everyday to visit Hana and soon learns that the Katakai Fireworks Festival is a symbol of happiness for Hana. Taro then takes the initiative to make Hana happy and approaches the town's youth group once more for admittance.

- Futakotamagawa High School HAD a Baseball Club/Team, but because of a fight during one one of their games, they were suspended for a year from all games. Kawato Koichi is the new Literature teacher at Futakotamagawa High, who has had his own suspension from accidentally punching a kid (from his previous teaching job) out a window. The Baseball Club is composed of minor thugs who smoke like chimneys, chase skirts, and their main past time is fighting. Kawato-Sensei's persistence, bigheartedness, and his belief in the kids allow each member one-by-one to turn their lives around. They realize that they have dreams and that dream is to play at Koshien High School Baseball Tournament. But, they run into loads of drama a long the way, including random thugs who want nothing more than to keep them from playing Baseball, fist fights, and personal drama that almost disallow them to even keep the Baseball Club/Team, let alone compete in the tournament. Eventually the Kids learn that the saying "All For One, and One For All" is the only way they will overcome all obstacles in the way.
- Reporters Takehara and Tsumura Aki work for the magazine "Shukan Dodongo". Their chief editor tells them to monitor Okase Shohei who is an ex-bureaucrat and was recently released from prison. 7 years ago, Shohei was arrested for embezzling 1 billion yen. The investigation seven years ago was able to track down 700 million yen but unable to locate the remaining 300 million yen. Now, the chief editor is sure Shohei will go to wherever the remaining 300 million yen is hidden. Shohei stops by a racehorse training center and heads to a street lined with expensive restaurants. Reporters Takehara and Tsumura lose Shohei in this area. Later, Shohei is found dead at a cemetery in Katsuura, Chiba Prefecture. He was strangled to death. The chief editor at the magazine believes Shohei was killed over the 300 million yen. The chief editor and Takehara go to the racehorse training center where Shohei stopped by earlier. They learn that the owner of the riding stable is Nishida Ryuzo and the owner of the horse is Politician Tateyama Torahei. The chief editor suddenly stops talking about the Shohei case. Takehara feels strange about the sudden change. A body in a suitcase is discovered in the forest in Mizusawa, Iwate Prefecture.
- Mitsuru Fukushima stumbles on the skeleton of Mitsuko, and pretends to be her. The school she works at is rough, but coworker Keiko recognizes 'Mitsuko,' and convinces him to persevere in this new job.
- Kawada Michiyo (Kimura Yoshino) lives happily with her husband Daisuke (Kitamura Kazuki) and their three sons. But one day, their lively 4-year-old second son Yuhei (Yokoyama Ayumu) who loves sports, catches a cold and is brought to the hospital when his fever does not subside. Yuhei is diagnosed with a cancer called hepatoblastoma which occurs in 1 out of 1 million people. Michiyo decides to call it a "worm" after discussing with Daisuke and encourages their son to be hospitalised so that he can beat the "worms" in his stomach. Yuhei bravely tolerates chemotherapy treatment, which is tough even for adults, and only has smiles for the family. However, Michiyo is told that Yuhei has no chance of surviving two years. She refuses to give up no matter what happens.
- Twenty-four-year-old country bumpkin Aiko is a new teacher who has arrived at a new town and a new primary school. When nervous she blurts out her local dialect. Yamamura Shuji takes on the request of Tosaki Ryunosuke, but something which Yamamura Shuji does not expect occurs in the process.
