- The film contains three Jan Werich's fairy tales, each directed by one artist. The first story sets out to the Sumava mountains in Southern Bohemia to find out whether Ogres ever lived there. The middle tale The Hat and the Little Jay Feather concerns a king who sends his three sons to bring back a hat he left at a tavern when he was young. The third and longest fairy tale Reason and Luck is about the two virtues of the title try to prove their importance by changing the life of a pig herder named Louis.
- A young girl's family hits crisis point when her mother's former lover returns to town. We see both a child's developing lens of the world, via Terezka's drawings, as she becomes immersed in the Red Riding Hood tale when Halloween approaches. Terezka's fantasy landscape increasingly mirrors, then collides with her opera singer mother's dissatisfaction with her own life in Czechoslovakia, and grinding pressure on her father as head of an airport's security.
- Motel Halali is an ideal place. Isolated deep in the forest, not a living soul turns up all the livelong year except the staff. This is a perfect place for Dr. Reinis's (Jaroslav Dusek) course designed to help people find meaning in life. Course participants learn something about what it means to live and even more about what it means to survive. That's because a zombie comes stalking out of a forest smelling of needles, decay, and blood. Our heroes must stand alone against it, without hope of help, without a chance in this most desolate, Godforsaken spot in Bohemia.
- A romantic story about becoming the projections of ourselves in order to gain the knowledge of own identity. A lyrical parable about first love and role conflict takes place between the decaying autumn and the first manifests of winter in the vanished village of Maria Stock.
