- On the banks of the Otava River stands a manor house, which a group of boys find very mysterious. After visiting it, the boys discover that there is nothing here but an old lady with her granddaughter. The group splits into two camps and "hot" fights ensue, but they don't last long.
- Editor Viktor Bláha is a notorious prankster. He likes to make up crazy stories and likes to have fun at the expense of his surroundings. Until one day he meets a cute girl who has an imagination even bigger than his and can keep up with him.

Valentin Plavec, a very hardworking but also very naive insurance clerk, becomes the target of endless jokes and pranks of his colleagues Bejsovec and Voborník. However, their last successful stunt got a bit out of hand. They added a 1 to the winning number 8456 and told Valentin that he had won a million in the lottery. But since Valentin cannot collect his winnings immediately, he withdraws twenty thousand, which is all the savings he has saved with his fiancee Helena, and starts shopping for a deposit.
- Two men, Slaba, a doctor, and Chodovský, a painter, meet by chance in a mountain hut. Both witnessed the suicide of a young girl years ago. Only now do they find out how the tragedy actually happened.

- In Skoda's factories, where in 1914 they feverishly arm themselves, the foreman Kalina, the father of Pavel and Jan, works. Pavel is a supporter of the monarchy, Jan, on the other hand, defends the idea of national independence. Just before mobilization, Jan flees to Russia, where he joins the group of volunteer legionnaires "Czech Company" fighting against the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Pavel enlists in the Austrian army. The brothers did not meet again until July 1917 in the battle of Zborov in Ukraine, which marked the successful breakthrough of the Austro-Hungarian front.
- The wife of cottager Marek has an illegitimate son, Jaroslav, with landowner Navrátil, who has no interest in the boy. Marek reproaches his wife for her misbehavior even after many years, avoids working, and drinks away their money. Jaroslav is a good boy and his mother is a great support. He likes Liduska, who lives alone with her father, the ferryman Král. Her mother has long ago abandoned them. Marek makes friends with the vagabond Doubek, who usually comes to the village each summer for seasonal farm work. Doubek takes a fancy to Liduska, and the romantic adolescent girl is not indifferent to him. Jaroslav is jealous of Doubek and on account of him he quarrels with Liduska.
- Lea Pohlová sets up a fashion store after the death of her parents, but she also has to take care of her sister Emu, who is still studying. Lea meets her neighbor, doctor Brozek, who is in financial trouble. Lea makes an agreement with him to finance his studies and he will marry her after finishing his studies.
- Artur Drmola (Jirí Dohnal) is the spoiled son of a rich family who proclaims to one and all that every young woman retains his interest for three months at the longest, and if he were to have a wife it would be no different. One morning the young man, still drunk, meets his old childhood friend Leontýna Sobotová (Lída Baarová). The young woman reproaches him for his way of life, but Artur does not recall from where she could know him. Leontýna is also from a wealthy family, yet she works in her father's company. Artur's affection for her completely transforms him and he also begins to work in his father's office. His worried mother (Zdenka Baldová) thinks that something is missing in Artur's life, and she intends to have him married.
- Rina Weberová (Hana Vítová), the daughter of a retired colonel, is the proprietress of a poorly prospering photo-studio. Her elderly friend, banker Václav Novák (Jaroslav Marvan), is secretly giving her financial support because he is in love with her. One day Rina meets a childhood friend, Vincenc Spacek (Ladislav Pesek), who has started his military service in Prague. The enterprising Vincenc with his inseparable fellow-soldier Vendelín Krídlo (Jindrich Plachta) give Rina's studio a great deal of advertising in their garrison, so that the soldiers flock to Rina to be photographed by her.
