A Secret Love (2020)
Incredible love story
I really loved this film. I loved all the details about their life in the present life and marriage in their old age, BUT I think it should have been a mini series and documented more of their life and love through the decades. There is so much more to their story growing up and being in love in a time where people were being murdered just because of who and how they love. I'm really grateful I got to hear their story though. It was beautiful and heartbreaking and endearing.
He Lied About Everything (2018)
Total missed opportunity
This is the story about a journalist who is really really bad at her job. What makes me really hate this film is that the story is about a doctor who actually murdered people, even children, but she is so self absorbed she makes it about a dream wedding she is cheated out of. I mean really. PEOPLE DIED but you didn't get reimbursed for wedding invitations that cost you 10k. I just can't even begin to tell you how embarrassing this is. The movie plays out like some extravagant episode of "cheaters," (but just as trashy) when I really feel like it should be about medical exploitation of his victims with maybe a little backstory about how he lied to you about a fairytale. Totally missed the point here, but I guess that's what happens when you give self indulgent narcissists a video camera and 85 minutes of airtime..
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)
Ho hum
As a child of the 80's who loved the "choose your own adventure " books, I really loved the idea of this, however this really fell short. The concept gets five stars but the story and characters get zero. I was not invested in the story or the very boring characters because while they are trying to make a new and edgy experience they totally missed what makes an awesome movie and that is the characters and plot. They didn't build your relationship with any character so you didn't have an emotional bond like you get with a really great movie, and the plot well there wasn't much of that either and the one they are trying for gets lost when you keep shuffling repeats of each scenario on a loop. It definitely doesn't watch like the old books read, but I actually love the idea and think with a better story and better characters this idea could be a lot of fun, but to actually be that great experience it would probably take many years to put together and a bigger budget than Netflix is willing to give. You kinda have to go all in for something like this and I feel like this film was just dipping their toes.
Making a Murderer (2015)
Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse
This documentary is incredible. It may seem a bit one sided but if you look at the list of people at the end who declined to be interviewed you will see why. You can't begrudge the producers for the other side not cooperating. That being said, the outcome is not very surprising. If you've paid any attention to America's justice system ..... ever ....you would understand that cops and judges are above the law and they can do whatever they want and they have zero accountability. This series just solidified that. Everyone is going to act angry and appalled but then never actually do anything about it. And it will continue and the "good ol' boys" will continue trampling on our basic "freedoms and liberties." Yay USA!! *insert exaggerated eye roll here*
The Goldbergs (2013)
This is my childhood!
This is my new favorite show! I'm addicted and can't stop watching. Everything about this is my childhood, from the father constantly in his whitey tighties, to the super obnoxious, borderline abusive older brother, to the movies, music, and technology. The person playing their mother is fantastic! She makes me believe her overly obsessive love for those kids and I wish I had a mother like that. This show makes me laugh, it makes me nostalgic, and it makes me crave more. Do I like it because it takes me back to my childhood and it's do relatable? Maybe, but I love it, even more than I love modern family. That's a glowing compliment. My favorite parts are the little clips at the end of the actual home movies. Perfect touch.
