Za danas toliko (2024)
Failed to deliver on expectations
Half-baked script. A film about everyday life, but it failed to escape from banality. Looks like the actors were left to make up dialogue on the spot. Photography is beautiful.
A little bit about dishonesty
A lot of hype was created around this film when it started showing in cinemas. I usually read good and bad reviews before watching a movie. I didn't find a single bad online review for this film, only praises. The rating on imdb was almost nine, the first three IMDB reviews were 10/10. One online critic (Milos Dasic) wrote that he laughed out loud during more than 3/4 of the film. I didn't notice a single humorous scene. Astroturfing.
Red Sparrow (2018)
Thank you for good old clichés. Aesthetic is polished.
Old-style spy movie i remember from the Eighties. I never thought I'd see any more of these. Tropes I almost forgot existed.
Russians bad. Americans good.
Special Russian school, ideological critique of the West.
Russians don't care about human life. Americans do.
Ergo:
Russians kill traitor on purpose. NATO leaking source gets hit by a car - by chance.
Ignore modern cars & gadgets and you get a taste of cold war propaganda.
Mother! (2017)
Game of Archetypes
Movie is about the writer and his wife, where in fact is about Demiurg, an imbecile who creates and destroys the world, because he did not make it well - through a bunch of religious allegories and whatever more. It's all nice.
However, the main female character is almost by archetypal rule - childish and passive. She does not understand why there are uncles and aunts whos taking her dad from her, why daddy is messing with them, what are the affairs of adult life. Everything is jeopardizing for her and practically the entire movie we are looking at hers cramping martyrs face. Instead of being, at least for herself, an active agent, to personally choose, she waits for things to happen. And the truth is that at any moment she can go, she can walk through that door - a thing she didn't do for a whole movie. So this "you asked for everything - I gave you everything" charade ends up with the ultimate sacrifice.
