It is getting down to Emmy voters’ moment of truth as we are now less than a week away from the start of Emmy nomination voting on June 13, with all ballots due to be completed by 10 p.m. Pt on Monday, June 24. Nominations will be announced on July 17. In fact, the TV Academy just sent their first warning shot to voters, urging them to “Get Ready To Vote!”
The 76th Emmy Awards airs September 15 on ABC, exactly eight months since the strike-delayed previous Primetime Emmy show in January, and it seems just like yesterday doesn’t it? I can’t swear on it, but I believe this is the first year ever to have two Primetime Emmys in the same calendar year, and certainly the first to have two so close to each other. Daniel Fienberg The shift to a backloaded schedule built around a May 31 deadline for Emmy consideration has drained some of the surprise from the spring TV calendar. Viewers are growing accustomed to a glut of high-profile limited series and prestige returning shows from March to May, with the biggest titles and stars creating their own gravitational fields of self-perpetuating coverage.
Luckily, though, there’s still room for discovery. With its literary pedigree and a budget that burst off the screen in the form of astonishing evocations of 17th century Japan, FX’s Shogun had “prestige” written all over it. Yet the care taken by creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to deliver this story without having it reek of appropriation and voyeurism was evident throughout. Still, who would have guessed that Shogun would be so successful that the network would want to push forward with future seasons beyond James Clavell’s novel,...

June 6, 2024, marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of the beaches of Normandy, France. Code-named Operation Overlord, it marked the largest amphibious invasion in military history and resulted in the defeat of German Nazi forces at Reims.
Some films portray the soldiers who set foot on the shores of Normandy, portrayed by actors including John Wayne, Tom Hanks, Mark Hamill, Lee Marvin, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel, Tom Sizemore, Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti and more. Others focus on Winston Churchill, who made the call for Britain to join the invasion. Two Churchill biopics, starring Brian Cox and Gary Oldman, came out in 2017 and depict the strenuous decision the prime minister made.

Dana Strong, CEO of Comcast-owned Sky Group has promised customers of the U.K. media conglomerate will continue to receive Warner Bros Discovery content on Sky platforms, saying that discussions with the studio to extend their content agreement are ongoing.
“We’ve been a partner with Warner for a very long time,” said Strong, adding that they’re “in conversation” about the future of their deal.
The deal, which primarily covers HBO content such as “Succession” and “And Just Like That,” is set to expire next year. Given the rise of studio-owned streamers, at the beginning of the multi-year output deal it seemed it would be unlikely to be renewed, with Wbd focusing on funnelling exclusive content to its own streaming offering Max.

Comcast-owned European pay-tv, media and telecom giant Sky has made a full-court press to lock down sports rights longer-term due to the benefits of sports content, CEO Dana Strong told a London conference on Tuesday.
During a fireside chat at Deloitte’s Media & Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference, she was asked about Sky’s sports strategy. “I am pretty passionate about sport,” and Sky has “extraordinary strength” in the field, she said.
About 18-24 months ago, “we really decided to double down and go long on sport,” Strong shared. That has helped build “a strategic moat” around sports, she said. “Sport matters because it is resilient,” more so than other forms of linear TV. It matters to consumers and communities, she added.
Also, “we have a very, very sophisticated monetization machine for sport,” including pay-tv and streaming, Strong also argued. “Sky likes to be culturally relevant” and be part of “moments,...

It seems that after Schindler's List, the recent The Zone of Interest, and hundreds of other films and TV series, it is becoming more and more difficult to talk about the Second World War and the Holocaust. The viewers have looked into this abyss of human suffering from the perspective of the victims and the perpetrators; as direct participants and witnesses of other people's grief.

Exclusive: Faye Dunaway (Bonnie & Clyde), Harvey Keitel (Bugsy) and Andrew McCarthy (The Blacklist) have signed on to star in Fate, a suspenseful, supernatural romance that will launch international sales via Highland Film Group at Cannes.
Set to enter production in Vancouver this month, the film’s plot is under wraps, though its key location, the fictional Vista hotel, is said to draw inspiration from the iconic Los Angeles movie theater of the same name, which filmmaker Quentin Tarantino refurbished in 2022. Jonathan Baker is directing and producing the project, which has been in development for five years, and tells Deadline, “there is an excellent chance it will stand as one of the most memorable love stories of our time.”
Known for iconic turns in films like Bonnie & Clyde and Chinatown, Dunaway comes to Fate after collaborating with Baker on his debut feature Inconceivable, a 2017 thriller also starring Gina Gershon, Nicky Whelan and Nicolas Cage.

Lali Sokolov (Jonah Hauer-King) fights to stay alive every moment he’s imprisoned at Auschwitz. Over the course of his time at the concentration camp, chronicled in Peacock‘s limited series The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Lali is under the supervision of Stefan Baretzki (Jonas Nay), a cruel Nazi guard at Auschwitz. Baretzki is brutally violent towards the prisoners (and kills many), but he also forms a strange, one-sided friendship with Lali. Stefan opens up to Lali about his personal life and doesn’t expose Lali and Gita’s (Anna Próchniak) relationship. Lali is constantly on edge with Baretzki, unsure if the officer will just decide to have him killed in the spur of the moment. In Episode 5 of the show, based on Heather Morris’ novel, Lali is stunned when Baretzki tells him, “You were like a brother to me.” For Hauer-King, the dynamic between Stefan and Lali is “maybe the...

I hadn’t heard the name Lali Sokolov until I got this assignment. The Holocaust and the Auschwitz concentration camp are certain things with which everyone is quite familiar, I’m sure, and I am no exception. The Tattooist of Auschwitz, a new miniseries from Stan, Sky Atlantic, and Peacock, tells us Lali’s story. It is adapted from the novel of the same name, penned by first-time author Heather Morris. Upon its release, the novel was riddled with controversy. One of the major allegations against the book was the fabrication of facts, which is obviously a very sensible issue considering the sensitivity of this matter. The series adaptation, however, addresses that in a subtle manner. Lali does tell his story to Heather, but he’s an unreliable narrator. His memory is confused at times. He is unsure about certain events. Even with all that, the story Lali is able to tell is quite remarkable.

In The Tattooist of Auschwitz, the two protagonists, Lali and Gita, suffer barbaric torture at the Auschwitz concentration camp, run by Nazi Germany. In the midst of all that horror, they do find love. The series is based on the book by Heather Morris, who appears as a character here. Here, we see an older Lali telling Heather the story of his life. The story does end on a happy note if you consider the fact that Lali and Gita got married, had a son, and went on to live for so many years after their horrific experience at Auschwitz. But in the final twenty minutes, the show dangles a very important question, which rarely any show or movie does – do people who suffer that amount of trauma ever recover? We’re going to get into that in this article, but before that, let us take a look at the...

Lali Sokolow kept a secret for 60 years before his story of love and survival in a Nazi death camp was captured in The Tattooist of Auschwitz — the novel that inspired the Peacock limited series of the same name, which released its six episodes on Thursday.
Sokolow, after reaching the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1942, eventually tattooed identifying serial numbers on the arms of fellow Jewish prisoners who were deemed fit to work and weren’t directed immediately to the gas chambers during the Holocaust. And collaborating with the Nazis by taking on the duties of a tattooist to stay alive caused Sokolow a life of guilt, fear and paranoia.
But his three years in Auschwitz also gave Lali the love of his life: Gita Furman, an 18-year-old Slovakian Jewish prisoner he instantly fell for the moment he put a painful needle into her skin to imprint a five-number tattoo. “I tattooed...

Specific images of the Holocaust have endlessly punctuated the film and TV landscape: The barbed wire of a concentration camp. Naked bodies rendered to skin and bone, tossed in discarded piles. Gleeful abuse and random killings by evil Nazis. Hollywood has repeatedly ingrained that imagery when presenting this horrific time in history, so to continue conjuring it adds to the collective trauma of an entire people.
Yet all these displays and more are the Sky Studios and Peacock co-production “The Tattooist of Auschwitz.” That makes it a challenging show to sit through, let alone binge six episodes of, when the event series drops on Peacock on May 2.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz has a distinctive way of way of marking death. Each time someone passes, the drama pauses on a moving portrait of their face in life, against the grim toll of a bell. Sometimes, it’s how we learn a character we’ve been following for several episodes has been killed. At others, it’s the only good look we get at people whose names we never even learn before they’re slaughtered.
Always, it’s hard to bear. Their eyes bore right through the camera, their expressions unreadable and their thoughts unknowable. Each stare nonetheless lands as a plea — for us to notice, to remember, to not look away — and the Peacock miniseries takes seriously the responsibility to bear witness.

From then on, Lali and Gita are determined to make it out of Auschwitz alive so they can be together. “We knew that first scene where they meet, we knew it was an important moment partly because of what it means for the story in the series, but also because it’s a real-life moment that happened to two people,” Hauer-King tells TV Insider. “We wanted to treat it respectfully. Their whole relationship is stolen moments. They’re in so much danger and those moments,...

Melanie Lynskey apparently never has to nag Jason Ritter to take out the garbage.
Lynskey had recent starring roles in Candy, The Last of Us and Yellowjackets. She credits Ritter with taking care of her and their 5-year-old daughter while she focuses on work.
“He’s the most supportive person in the world,” Lynskey tells People in this week’s issue. “The last few years we’ve had this role of like, whoever’s job makes the most sense, whether it’s the most exciting career wise or it’s more money, we would prioritize the one that was going to help move the person’s career forward.”
That comes at the expense of Ritter’s career, as he’s been “getting offered stuff all the time” and has been passing on those offers to support Lynskey.

Melanie Lynskey recently told People magazine that her husband and fellow actor Jason Ritter has sacrificed his own career in recent years so that hers could flourish. Lynskey has been on a roll lately with an Emmy-nominated and series regular role on Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” plus acclaimed supporting turns in “The Last of Us,” “Candy” and more. None of this career success would be possible had Ritter not put his own acting career on pause to help raise their five-year-old daughter while Lynskey took acting gigs.

Melanie Lynskey is praising husband Jason Ritter for putting his own acting career on hold for her success.
“He’s the most supportive person in the world,” the Yellowjackets star told People magazine about Ritter, whom she began dating in 2013 and married in 2020. “The last few years we’ve had this role of like, whoever’s job makes the most sense, whether it’s the most exciting career wise or it’s more money, we would prioritize the one that was going to help move the person’s career forward.”
Lynskey added that her success comes at the expense of Ritter’s work, as he has been “getting offered stuff all the time” but has passed on roles in support of his wife. “It’s like genuinely sacrificing,” she said.
The actress also credited the Parenthood alum for encouraging her to take on her memorable role in the first season of The Last of Us.

Barbra Streisand has released her first song in six years, titled “Love Will Survive” — and it’s her first work for an onscreen project in 12 years, since she herself last appeared in a movie, 2012’s “The Guilt Trip.”
“Love Will Survive,” composed by Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve, will be Streisand’s end title anthem for the credits of Peacock and Sky limited series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz,” based on the WWII-set novel of the same name. Melanie Lynskey portrays real-life author Heather Morris, who interviewed Holocaust survivor Lali Sokolov (Harvey Keitel) about meeting his future wife Gina (Anna Próchniak) in a concentration camp. The novel is inspired by the real-life love story of Lali and Gita Sokolov, who met while prisoners in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during the Holocaust. He had been ordered to tattoo serial numbers on prisoners’ arms.
