The Doctor Who X account posted the news, writing: “We’re sad to report the passing of William Russell, a legend in #DoctorWho history – who played one of the first and original companions to the Doctor, Ian Chesterton.”
Current showrunner Russell T Davies, who is into his second stint at the helm, also posted his condolences to X.
“An absolute legend, for Doctor Who and the whole of television,” he wrote. “In 1963, William created the template for the Doctor’s companion, and that’s still going strong, 61 years later. He’s adored by fandom, and will never be forgotten.”
Born in 1924, Russell quickly gained prominence in the UK when he was cast as lead in ITV’s The Adventures of Sir Lancelot in the mid-1950s.

The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).

In 2017, on the press circuit for his first Hercule Poirot film Murder on the Orient Express, Kenneth Branagh was asked by French newspaper Le Figaro to name his three favourite Agatha Christie Novels. The actor-director picked Orient Express, of course, and two others: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, published in 1926, and, published a decade later in 1936, Murder in Mesopotamia.
“I like one, Roger Ackroyd, because it’s deep in the heart of England so it’s classic Christie, village green…,” said Branagh. “And the other one because it’s in a super-exotic archaeological dig and she knew those really well so you feel in both of those cases amazing detail. She knows what she’s writing about.”
Christie would know the setting for Murder in Mesopotamia, an archaeological dig in Iraq, having spent several months on expeditions in Iraq and Syria with her second husband, archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan.

2023 was a banner year for horror films from across the globe, which deserve just as much praise and attention as any domestic genre triumph.
In a year that’s had its share of ups and downs at the box office, horror continues to be a top performer and one of the most consistent sources of entertainment. Superhero fatigue continues to set in and the ballooning budgets of major studio blockbusters have started to seem more like a curse than a kindness. The film industry adapts accordingly and figures out what audiences want.
However, horror movies have never been more popular and 2023 has been a goldmine of blood, guts, and gore. This year alone has featured grandiose franchise sequels like Scream VI, Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, and Saw X. Even Hercule Poirot has gotten into the horror game with A Haunting in Venice. Additionally, weird and wild local horror releases like Skinamarink,...

It’s been a robust year for genre film. Horror’s continued dominance at the box office has effectively spilled over into fantasy, thrillers, and sci-fi in ways that defy easy classification. So much so that it’s difficult to overlook the 2023 genre movies that employ horror techniques, draw inspiration from our favorite genre, or simply dabble in it.
These horror adjacent movies may not fully plunge into the genre, but they’re also not afraid to wear their horror influences on their sleeves, whether through style or bloodletting.
Here are the top ten best horror adjacent movies of 2023.
10. A Haunting in Venice
Director and star Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot gets reeled into another whodunnit, but this time Branagh leans into the Halloween setting with stunning style to infuse this murder mystery with atmospheric mood. A Haunting in Venice looks and feels like a vintage ghost story, complete with nods to Edgar Allan Poe.

The samurai Mizu stands backed up to the edge of a seaside cliff, flanked by four master swordsman known as the Four Fangs. The line between animation and live action is brilliantly blurred in “Blue Eye Samurai,” the 2D/3D hybrid animated action series set during Edo-period Japan. It’s “Mulan” meets “Game of Thrones,” in which Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine) — a mixed-race, lone-wolf warrior — lives in disguise seeking revenge on the four white men who made her a “creature of shame”.
“Blue Eye Samurai” represents a bold, cinematic leap in TV adult animation that’s driven by the period-authentic scope and spectacle. All eight episodes are treated as a different genre, and the graphic violence and sex are enhanced by the stylistic poetry of the animated form (the characters are inspired by Bunraku puppets and the visual style by ukiyo-e woodblock prints). Crucially, though, its exploration of race and gender through the dark lens of anti-hero Mizu is refreshing and relatable.

Based on a novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus, the Apple TV+ series is set in 1960s America and it revolves around Elizabeth Zott, who has always dreamed of being a scientist but because of the patriarchal society she is denied her dream. Taylor Swift‘s “experiment” to release a 2-hour-48-minute concert movie based on her “Eras” tour turned out to be quite a boon for the box office in a slower fall season. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was announced in late August, shortly after the five L.A. concerts that were filmed for the movie, directed by Sam Wrench. Theater chain AMC took the distribution rights, working with Variance to get it into other theaters, with it ultimately ending up in 3,855 theaters, including 377 IMAX screens.
The movie’s weekend began with $2.8 million in last-minute Thursday previews, only announced by Swift on Wednesday night at her L.A. premiere with tickets going on sale Thursday morning. The movie’s $39 million Friday (including those previews) was more in line with advance presales reported, but business dropped on Saturday, so that AMC only reported an...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer nudged near the $60 million mark in China during a somewhat downbeat weekend for moviegoing in the world’s second-largest theatrical territory.
The Universal Pictures-backed historical blockbuster added $2.5 million from Friday to Sunday, taking its total to $58.1 million, according to data from box office tracker Artisan Gateway. Oppenheimer came in fourth place for the frame behind local crime thriller Dust to Dust, Millennium Pictures’ action franchise misfire Expend4bles and Chinese comedy blockbuster No More Bets.
Oppenheimer has been huge on Imax in China. The film earned $740,000 this past weekend for a $17 million total in the format, which is a whopping 30 percent of its nationwide cume to date.
Oppenheimer opened in China nearly a month ago and its staying power has been considerable. Nolan has a strong following in China — a fact that Universal leveraged with a very well-received prerelease promotional visit to Beijing by the director in late August.

Audiences don’t seem to intend to attend the latest “Expendables.” The fourth entry in the ensemble action franchise is notching a series-low opening day from 3,518 theaters with about $3 million, a figure that includes a meagre $750,000 in Thursday previews.
Produced by Millennium Media and released by Lionsgate, “Expend4bles” is projecting a debut that’ll fall well short of the $15 million to $17 million range that had been expected heading into the weekend, and also behind the $15.8 million sum that “The Expendables 3” put up nine years ago. The franchise has been sliding since its first entry landed a $34.8 million opening in 2010, followed by the 2012 sequel netting $28.5 million.
“Expend4bles” is in a close race for first place against the third weekend of “The Nun II.” If it does end up on top, it’ll be leading one of the lowest total box office weekends of 2023. Projections indicate that movie theaters could fall...

Numbers have begun rolling in for this second to last weekend of September 2023 and to be brutally honest: they are pretty terrible. Expend4bles is looking to come in severely under where even the most modest of tracking had it with what is looking like an $8-$10 million opening. In our Thursday predictions I saw that the fourthquel was tracking to a mid teens opening and thought it could get to around $17 million. It seems audiences decided to go the other way with this one and let it die a quiet death, the way many members of the Expendable team seem to have, as the film only features a handful of returning stars.
In his 5/10 review for the film, our Editor in Chief Chris Bumbray said that the film was neither as bad as most critics had written, yet still not very good. I would say I agree with that assessment,...

'A Haunting in Venice' producer Judy Hofflund has revealed that she and Sir Kenneth Branagh "really wanted to shake it up" in their latest Poirot movie.Branagh returns as Agatha Christie's famous sleuth for the third time in the new flick and Hofflund discussed how those making the film wanted it to be "dark and scary" compared to previous installments 'Murder on the Orient Express' and 'Death on the Nile'.The producer told Radio Times: "'Murder on the Orient Express' and 'Death on the Nile' were similar to the extent that they were sort of... a lot of them (were) outdoors like they were travelogues, they were beautiful."And I think I wanted this to be dark and scary and a little claustrophobic and just to really shake it up and let it feel different. We just didn't want to do a third one...

It was an extremely tight race at the box office this past weekend, but a winner has emerged. In the end, it was Valak the demon nun besting ace detective Hercule Poirot, as "The Nun II" managed to narrowly defeat "A Haunting in Venice." On one hand, we have a franchise that is now a decade old with absolutely no signs of running out of gas. On the other, we have a series that may well be taking its last gasps.
"The Nun II" pulled in $14.5 million in its second weekend to take the top spot on the charts, per The Numbers. That represents a 55% drop from its $32.6 million debut when the latest entry in The Conjuring Universe dethroned Denzel Washington's "The Equalizer 3." Meanwhile, director Kenneth Branagh's "A Haunting in Venice" had to settle for the silver medal in its debut, taking in $14.3 million. As far as these things go,...

Monday Am: It wasn’t a tie as many had Nun 2 and A Haunting in Venice far apart at the box office yesterday, but the New Line horror pic’s second weekend really did win in the end with a $14.5M take, -56%, to the Kenneth Branagh pic’s opening of $14.3M.
Nun 2‘s domestic stands at $56.3M, putting the Conjuring universe of movies’ global box office at $742M stateside, $2.17 billion global.
Nun 2 ‘s Sunday was higher than Haunting‘s $3.95M to $3.4M.
Comscore called this past weekend at $62.4M, which is the second worst Ytd. Don’t expect any great miracles this weekend with Lionsgate/Millenium’s long-in-the-tooth, Expand4bles opening. The third film back in 2014 opened to $15.8M and finaled at $39.3M domestic.
Sunday Am: It looks like Hercule Poirot doesn’t have a prayer at winning the box office this weekend, with Kenneth Branagh’s A Haunting in Venice losing No.

As Kenneth Branagh brings his third Hercule Poirot film to theaters with “A Haunting in Venice,” fans of the Agatha Christie character might debate: Who is the best actor to ever play the mustachioed Belgian detective? And which versions simply didn’t work?
We’ve compiled a list of the most notable actors to portray the famously fussy sleuth —from Tony Randall to PBS favorite David Suchet — and ranked them with both how true they are to Christie’s vision and how enjoyable their portrayal is to audience.
MGM
7. Tony Randall (1965)
The “Odd Couple” actor’s one outing as the detective in the Frank Tashlin-directed film “The Alphabet Murders” leans very hard into comedy. The result: Despite the mustache and bald cap and an occasionally passable accent, we get very little of “the little grey cells” character we expect and far more sight gigs and slapstick.

Just a quick update for you today as numbers have begun rolling in for this third weekend of September (this is one of those rare five weekend months). Everything seems to be falling perfectly in line with our predictions from Thursday with the most recent Hercule Poirot mystery, A Haunting In Venice looking at a first place finish with a projected 3-day take of $14 million. That number is based off Venice’s $1.2 million in Thursday previews and a $5.3 million Friday (as of this writing).
That number puts it slightly ahead of 2020’s pandemic ridden debut of Death on the Nile that netted a $12.8 million opening. Yet it is a ways away from the original 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express’s opening of $28.6 million. It seems these sequels are as cursed as some of the characters in them as they seem to always be released with some baggage that affects its performance.

Two films filled with supernatural horror are in a tight race at the box office this weekend, as Disney/20th Century’s “A Haunting in Venice” and Warner Bros./New Line’s “The Nun II” are both estimated to earn $13-14 million at the box office this weekend.
Industry estimates currently have “A Haunting in Venice” getting the narrowest edge for No. 1 at $13.7 million from 3,305 theaters after earning a $5.5 million opening day. That’s a step above pre-release projections for Kenneth Branagh’s third Poirot film, which was expected to match the $12.8 million opening of last year’s predecessor “Death on the Nile.”
But that opening is also well short of the $28.6 million opening of the first Poirot film, “Murder on the Orient Express,” in 2017; and it leaves “Haunting” with a ways to go to turn a theatrical profit against its $60 million budget, though that is considerably less than the...

A Haunting in Venice is the third entry in Kenneth Branagh‘s Hercule Poirot film franchise. Directed by Branagh himself from a screenplay by Michael Green, the film is based on a 1969 novel titled Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie. A Haunting in Venice sees the return of Hercule Poirot as he takes on another murder mystery during a Halloween Seance at a haunted palazzo in Venice, Italy.
The supernatural murder mystery film also stars Michelle Yeoh as Mrs. Reynolds, Jamie Dornan as Dr. Leslie Ferrier, Tina Fey as Ariadne Oliver, Kelly Reilly as Rowena Drake, Kyle Allen as Maxime Gerard, Emma Laird as Desdemona Holland, Tina Fey as Ariadne Oliver, Riccardo Scamarcio as Vitale Portfoglio, Camille Cottin as Olga Seminoff, Jude Hill as Leopold Ferrier, and Amir El-Masry.

Kenneth Branagh’s second Agatha Christie film Death on the Nile, did not have a smooth ride. Its release was delayed several times due to first Disney buying the studio that made the film, 20th Century Fox, and then the Covid pandemic, and its cast turned out to be a Pandora’s Box of, at best, bad PR and at worst, criminal allegations.
Back in 2020 then, when Branagh was filming his autobiographically inspired family drama, Belfast, a third Hercule Poirot film wasn’t necessarily a given. Though Agatha Christie’s estate and Branagh were keen to make further sequels to 2017 hit Murder on the Orient Express, the next Christie movie had yet to be greenlit.
That uncertainty inspired Branagh to tuck a Poirot Easter Egg into Belfast as “an offering to the gods,” as he told The Hollywood Reporter. “They can tell us, in the end, if we’ll be allowed to make it.

There’s no shortage of brilliant detectives in novels, film and television, but one of the greatest — or at least the one with the fanciest facial hair — is Hercule Poirot. The Belgian investigator, created by Agatha Christie, has appeared 33 novels, more than 50 short stories, and has been played by a variety of iconic actors.
But for whatever reason, Poirot has only sporadically appeared on the big screen, with many of his earliest movie appearances being lost to time, while some of his other noteworthy adventures were rewritten as vehicles for Christie’s other beloved creation, Miss Marple.
Here we take a look at the various theatrically-released adventures of Hercule Poirot, from the 1930s to today, and see which of his mysteries were truly worth solving.

This article contains major spoilers for "A Haunting in Venice."
The murder mystery "whodunit" has very close ties to the horror genre; in fact, some may argue that murder mysteries deserve to be considered a part of the horror genre, full stop. It's splitting hairs, of course, but the question is one of tone and focus — most horror stories put a bigger emphasis on the act(s) of murder, while most mystery stories are about murder's after-effects.
"A Haunting in Venice" is the latest cinematic Agatha Christie adaptation by Kenneth Branagh in which he serves a dual role on both sides of the camera, as both director and actor portraying the central role of detective Hercule Poirot. Branagh's previous adaptations of Christie's Poirot mysteries, "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Death on the Nile," were films that fit neatly into the mystery genre and even, in a couple of instances,...

In the world of film criticism, critics are often dismissed by people who think that cinema should not be overanalyzed, or in some cases, analyzed at all. The expression goes that we should simply be able to "turn off our brains and enjoy the movie." It's a philosophy that argues that films are passive forms of entertainment: art that is intended to be merely ephemeral, with nothing to challenge our perspectives or preconceived notions, and no lasting impact on our psyche.
To put it another way, for those who wish to turn off their brains, movies are — to quote "The Simpsons" (albeit a little out of context) — "just a bunch of stuff that happened."
And while it may be tempting to try to disassociate and view motion pictures in as close to a vacuum as our minds can muster, filmmakers are usually trying to get us to snap out of that.

Agatha Christie fans will delight in A Haunting In Venice, because Kenneth Branagh really hits the mark with this one.
Branagh has directed and starred a few of these Christie classic mysteries as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, featuring star casts and a big, splashy out-sized approach (including Branagh version of Poirot’s famous mustache). Those films have been based on very familiar Agatha Christie mysteries, the ones that have been done, on big screen and small, many times before over the years, which meant they invited comparison, sometimes unfavorable, to some stellar films and productions.
With A Haunting In Venice, Branagh takes a different tack. This Agatha Christie mystery film is based on a less-familiar Poirot mystery, Christie’s “Hallowe’en Party,...

Plot: While on an early retirement, famed private detective Hercule Poirot finds himself lured back into the world of mysteries. Specifically one fueled by the occult and invisible haunts that go bump in the night.
Review: Kenneth Branagh’s cinematic career began with the Bard. The director’s debut was his bold take on William Shakespeare’s Henry V. The film garnered massive buzz, leading to an Academy Award nomination for his performance and directorial efforts. The praise was so impressive that Branagh was awarded the BAFTA for Best Director. He followed up his early career with a feature film version of Much Ado About Nothing a few years later. And now, with the recent Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and the upcoming A Haunting in Venice, the man who reawakened Shakespeare is bringing us the gifts of an Agatha Christie cinematic universe. Kenneth Branagh is back once again as Detective Hercule Poirot in a brand new Agatha Christie adaptation. "A Haunting in Venice" is the third interpretation of Christie's work by Branagh in the past several years, with the actor and director taking on a lesser-known book by the author for a more overtly horror-driven tale. With a stacked A-list cast that includes the likes of Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, and Michelle Yeoh, this is one of the most star-studded films of the fall season.
Following 2017's "Murder on the Orient Express" and 2022's "Death on the Nile," this latest Poirot mystery is set in post-World War II Venice on All Hallows' Eve. Now retired and living in exile in the one of world's most glamorous cities, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is once again thrust into the world...

It appears we are in that period at the box office where the big summer movie season has come and gone, and the big films that will fill out the remainder of the year are still on the horizon. It is generally mid-September when there is a bit of a lull. Last year, Tristar Pictures trotted out their Viola Davis starring The Woman King, which was able to grab a solid $25.1 million debut, while the quite excellent horror film Barbarian saw a solid second-weekend decline of just 38.3%.
This year, 20th Century Studios will try their hand at a new type of scare with the Kenneth Branagh adaptation A Haunting in Venice, the third film in his Hercule Poirot franchise that dates back to 2017’s star-studded Murder on the Orient Express. That film had some genuine heat behind it and would garner a respectable $28.6 million opening on its way to a...

There are new projections on the horizon for Disney’s “A Haunting in Venice”.
The latest installment in the Hercule Poirot franchise, “A Haunting in Venice”, is expected to earn around $12 million at the box office this weekend, according to a report from Deadline.
If the estimates are correct, it could bump off “Nun 2” from the towering spot, but the “Conjuring” sequel would need to drop more than 60% in viewership.

Nevertheless, the $12 million projection is a hard fall from the surprising $28.6 million opening weekend of “Murder on the Orient Express”, which ultimately proved to be a sleeper hit with adults.
The positives for “A Haunting in Venice” are primarily in the critical realm, where it’s received the highest reviews for a Branagh Christie adaptation. It earned an impressive 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas both “Orient Express” and “Death on the Nile...

In "A Haunting in Venice," Hercule Poirot (star and director Kenneth Branagh) is tired. He is tired of solving murders. He is tired of the entire concept of death and dying. He wonders if this should be the last time he tries to solve a case. And as a viewer, you can't help but agree with him - he should stop there.
"A Haunting in Venice" is billed as an adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Hallowe'en Party," but the movie has almost nothing to do with that story, changing most of the details of the characters and their relationships to each other. Branagh's film is set in the early days after World War II, and Poirot has retired from crime solving. Rowena Drake (Kelly Reilly) is holding a Halloween party for the city's orphans - a morbid reminder of the cost of war - and after the children are gone,...

The whodunit is back.
At least that seems to be the case in recent years with the success of Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot movies—the third one, A Haunting in Venice, hits theaters this week—Rian Johnson’s Knives Out thrillers, and even TV shows like Only Murders in the Building. But according to someone who should know, the great-grandson of legendary murder mystery writer Agatha Christie, the classic detective story subgenre has never quite gone away.
“I would say that the movie industry came to the game late,” says James Prichard, a man who is not only Christie’s descendant but also the chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Ltd., which manages the literary and media rights to his great-grandmother’s works. “We’ve never gone away, we’ve been making stuff all through the last 10, 20, 30 years. But we didn’t make a movie for a very long time.

Kenneth Branagh is back both in front of and behind the camera for another Agatha Christie adaptation in the form of "A Haunting in Venice." Based on one of the author's lesser-known Hercule Poirot mysteries "Hallowe'en Party," this will give Branagh's trilogy a more overtly spooky spin than his previous two adaptations, "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Death on the Nile." The big question is how this entry will perform commercially. Will it be a surprise fall success story like "Murder" before it? Or will it suffer theatrically like "Death" did last year?
Box Office Pro currently has the star-studded "A Haunting in Venice" taking in anywhere between $11 and $16 million on its opening weekend. That would be much closer to "Death on the Nile," which opened to $12.8 million in February 2022, when it was competing directly with the Super Bowl. On the opposite end of the spectrum, 2017's "Murder on the Orient Express...

No matter how much struggling Warner Bros. and DC Studios are enduring right now with their cinematic universe, there’s no doubt that DC is doing pretty well with their standalone movies, although there have been only two of them in the last ten years. Since Christopher Nolan concluded his ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy in 2012, the only non-dceu live-action movies WB and DC released are 2019’s ‘Joker’ and 2022’s ‘The Batman.’ Both of these movies were met with critical and commercial successes, and despite Dcu kicking off soon, both of them will get sequels as the Elseworlds projects.
The original ‘Joker’ movie, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, was released in 2019 and achieved enormous success. The movie grossed $1.074 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won two of them: Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score for the composer Hildur Guðnadóttir.
