‘Loki’ Episode ‘Glorious Purpose’ Nominated for Best Dramatic Presentation Against Tough Competition
Marvel Studios faced fan backlash and record low-box office results last year, with 2 out of 3 major projects failing both when it comes to earnings and critical reception, but not all was bad. ‘Loki’ returned with the second season and the show was highly praised by fans and critics alike, being the best project that the MCU has released in recent time.
The show was not only extremely enjoyable and ended Loki’s character development on a high note, it also set up some pretty grand implications for the continuation of the Multiverse Saga. It’s no wonder then that the show has been nominated for several awards, including this year’s Hugo award. The Hugo Awards are prestigious awards given annually for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements. They are named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine ‘Amazing Stories.’

Seven years ago, Donald Glover won his first two Emmys, Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing for “Atlanta.” While he missed out on nominations last year for the final season of his FX series — he did receive a writing bid for “Swarm” — Glover is back in the hunt this cycle with “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Inspired by the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film of the same name, the spy series is competing in drama, which means Glover could become just the second man and third person to win lead Emmys in comedy and drama.
Carroll O’Connor is thus far the only male performer to have achieved this, having pocketed a record-setting four Best Comedy Actor Emmys for “All in the Family” in 1972 and three in a row from 1977-79 before adding a Best Drama Actor statuette for “In the Heat of the Night” in 1989. Cindy Morgan, best remembered for her key dual role in 1982’s Tron as Lora/Yori and as Lacey, the niece to Ted Knight, in comedy classic Caddyshack, was passed away at the age of 69. It was confirmed that Morgan died of natural causes.
A contact for Cindy Morgan wrote the following on Facebook, revealing the actress had actually died late last year. “I want to regretfully inform Cindy’s fans, that she has passed away. I got the call on New Years Eve night. I have been waiting for them to release a report and get more information. I’m sending info in to TMZ etc which should help spread the word of her passing. I will update as I can. May she fly with the angels and rest in peace.”

If you subscribe to JoBlo Horror Originals (which you should!), you’ve probably caught our series 80’s Horror Movie Memories. In this show, we highlight all of our favourite horror movies from arguably the greatest decade for horror, with tons of very special guests. The decade started with a bang, with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the first instalment in the Friday the 13th series, John Carpenter’s The Fog, and more. Check out our feature-length examination of 1980 here, but this week, we’re looking at 1981.
While some may think the year pales compared to 1980, they might be underestimating what’s a pretty significant year for horror. Arguably, one would call it the year of the werewolf, with the year dominated by the best werewolf movies of all time, John Landis’s An American Werewolf in London and Joe Dante’s The Howling. While those might have been the biggest...

Modern fandom, as we have come to understand it, likely originated in the letters columns of "Amazing Stories," the sci-fi magazine first published in April of 1922. The magazine's publisher, Hugo Gernsback, founded a fan community called the Science Fiction League and encouraged the readers of "Amazing Stories" to write in and, importantly, to correspond with one another. Sci-fi fans gathered around certain works of literature and, later, movies and TV. Decades hence, when "Star Trek" went off the air, fan communities were ready to congregate like never before, and, lo, the sci-fi convention was born.
Bubbling underneath the surface of the now-exploded "Star Trek" fandom was an undercurrent of sexuality in which certain fans loved reveling. Sometime in 1970, enterprising Trekkies began writing erotic fiction starring Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, exploring the on-screen relationship that some saw as bubbling with sexual attraction. The slang term to describe these erotic stories was "Kirk/Spock,...

“The Old Man” features a pair of performances from two septuagenarian performers that make this FX series pretty close to perfect. The show follows Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges as a retired CIA agent (Dan Chase) who is forced into hiding after he kills an intruder who breaks into his house. The hunt for Chase is overseen by none other than John Lithgow, who plays Harold Harper — FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence. As Harper, Lithgow uses his intelligence as a performer to paint a picture of a world-weary man who makes his trades with secrets and feels the weight of that after so many years. Lithgow is an actor who brings weight and wit to any role, and critics agree that this is another fine turn from the thespian.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) explained: “Bridges and Lithgow seize every available opportunity to imbue their archetypal characters with a world-weariness that’s...

Chris Ledesma, who served as the beloved music editor of The Simpsons on every one of its first 734 episodes, from the Fox animated series’ premiere in 1989 through a 34th-season installment in November, has died. He was 64.
Ledesma died Dec. 16 in Los Angeles, a spokesperson for the show told The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death was revealed.
Ledesma had been hired to fill in as a music editor on Fox’s The Tracey Ullman Show, where The Simpsons began as a series of shorts playing in and out of commercials. He then started on the spinoff on Nov. 22, 1989.
“I was skeptical of turning the little 30- and 60-second featurettes on Tracey into a full-fledged, half-hour show,” he wrote on his blog in 2011. “All that went out the window as soon as I saw the first two shows.”

Richard Donner's 1985 film "The Goonies" has found itself ensconced deep within the consciousness of a certain generation of film fans. On the one hand, "The Goonies" is a straightforward Spielbergian adventure story (Steven Spielberg served as the film's executive producer) about a bunch of suburban kids, spending their final weekend together before all their homes are foreclosed, following an ancient treasure map to a lost pirate ship full of gold. Notably, Donner captured how chaotic, crass, and rude kids can be.
"The Goonies" is loaded, by design, with obnoxious kid chatter and light cussing. The titular Goonies, all of them hovering around age 11, like each other but also kind of dislike each other, and are addressed by their clubhouse-style nicknames. The inventor character is called Data (Ke Huy Quan), the jokester is called Mouth (Corey Feldman), and, most rudely, the overweight character is named Chunk (Jeff Cohen).

Apple TV+ is bringing a rebooted version of anthology series Amazing Stories to its stream with Steven Spielberg returning as producer.
Apple TV+ heard you were in the market for some amazing stories and as fate would have it, so are they.
Apple's new streaming service has ordered anthology series Amazing Stories, a revival of the 1985 NBC series of the same name. Steven Spielberg will return to executive produce the series through Amblin Entertainment just like he did with the original version.
The original Amazing Stories was little-watched but greatly admired. It ran on NBC from 1985 through 1987, wracking up 12 Emmy nominations and a few wins in the process. The series told...well, amazing stories, mostly in the sci-fi genre. It featured plenty of talent onscreen and even more in the directors' chair with Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Irvin Kershner, and more all helming episodes.

The series told...well, amazing stories, mostly in the sci-fi genre. It featured plenty of talent onscreen and even more in the directors' chair with Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Irvin Kershner, and more all helming episodes.

The rush of the holidays is now behind us, the weather sucks, and the news is getting scarier by the day. There’s really only one sane response: stay in and watch more television. Continuing its never-ending flood of content, Netflix has already released Messiah and Spinning Out, series designed to appeal to those who’ve been waiting for a second coming-themed religious mystery story and an ice-skating drama, respectively. This month will also soon see the returns of Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO and Party of Five, the latter receiving a timely,...

Have you been longing for more Once Upon a Time ever since the series went off the air?
We know the feeling.
In this reboot and revival-heavy world, no new projects set in the Ouat universe are in the works, but the creators are returning to ABC with a new show set within the Disney fairytale universe.
Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis were at the wheel for all seven seasons of Ouat, and their new show is called Epic.
It is “a romantic anthology series set in the fairytale universe of Disney… taking place in a Disney-like Enchanted Forest.”
Deadline first reported the news, and while this series sounds like it could include some characters from Ouat, that is not part of the plan.
This series will be all about new characters, so there's that. Sometimes, it's best to go with new characters so that fans get to meet lots of new additions.

Disney Fairytale Universe-Set Romantic Anthology ‘Epic’ In Works At ABC From ‘Once Upon A Time’ Trio
Exclusive: Disney-owned ABC has put in development Epic, a romantic anthology series, from former Once Upon a Time writer Brigette Hales, series creators/executive producers/showrunners Eddy Kitsis & Adam Horowitz, their Kitsis & Horowitz Productions and ABC Signature Studios.
Epic is a romantic anthology series set in the fairytale universe of Disney. Taking place in a Disney-like Enchanted Forest, it will center on a whole new set of new heroes, villains, princes, princesses and all manner of magical beings. While it will pay homage to the classic signposts we’re all familiar with from the stories we grew up with, Epic will endeavor to create a whole new batch of characters as it explores love in all its forms.
Kitsis and Horowitz took a similar approach with Once Upon a Time, which blended classic Disney fairytale creations and new characters. The series was a hit for ABC, which aired for seven seasons.

Fans were pretty shocked to hear that actor Robert Forster, known for his roles in Jackie Brown, Heroes, The Descendants, Breaking Bad, Twin Peaks, and Last Man Standing, had passed away on the day he appeared in the Netflix film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. He reprised his role from the series and did an incredible job in the role. The star of the film, Aaron Paul, raved about working with the actor, and even said he lobbied for a scene that centered around Forster’s character to stay in after it was cut, and now hopes for a director’s cut of the entire film to be released.
We were all pretty sure that the film was Forster’s last work, but it turns out he was actually involved in another project before he passed away. Apple TV+ has created a reimagining of Steven Spielberg’s 1980s anthology series,...

Director Quentin Tarantino, who directed Robert Forster in his Academy Award-nominated role of Max Cherry in Jackie Brown, remember the late actor today as a “straight shooter” and “good man.”

There’s nothing more exhilarating than the early days of a streaming platform when executives go all-out in the hope of attracting new subscribers. We’ve spent the better part of 2019 watching Disney+ promise big-budget adaptations of each of its tentpole franchises, and Apple TV+ has followed suit by snatching up every recognizable creator left on the market. That means new shows from executive producers like M. Night Shyamalan (“Servant“), Stephen Spielberg (“Amazing Stories“), and even Stephen King (“Lisey’s Story“).

It is no surprise how many people are expressing grief at the death of Robert Forster from brain cancer at age 78. It was far too soon. He’s actually on screen now, in Vince Gilligan’s “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” which hit both theaters and Netflix this weekend.
Anyone who met Forster knows what a kindly man he was, often handing out elegant silver letter openers to set visitors and new acquaintances; he gave me my second at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where he was promoting the intimate family drama “What They Had.” He steals the movie and provides its emotional center as the tough but vulnerable patriarch doggedly hanging onto his wife (Blythe Danner) as she slips into Alzheimer’s.

Less than a month before launch, Apple TV+ has announced the first series that it will actually own in-house via its own production studio: the limited drama series “Masters of the Air,” the third installment in Steven Spielberg’s “Band of Brothers”/”The Pacific” WWII saga.
Based on the nonfiction book “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany” by Donald L. Miller, the nine-episode limited series follows the story of the Eighty Air Force (aka the “Mighty Eighth”) who brought the war to Hitler’s doorstep.
The follow-up to 2001’s “Band of Brothers” and 2010’s “The Pacific,” “Masters of the Air” will be executive produced by Spielberg through Amblin Television, alongside Tom Hanks and Gary Goeztman for Playtone. Graham Yost will also co-executive produce alongside series writer John Orloff, Amblin Television’s Darryl, and Justin Falvey and Playtone’s Steven Shareshian.

You can tell the looming subscription video Super Derby is getting serious: companies are starting to give stuff away. Which is wacky. If you're a subscription service, aren't you supposed to charge for all that premium, top of the Peak TV content you're commissioning? If if you give it away to millions of people, what does that mean?
First on the freebie list by a long way is Apple, which announced more details on its TV+ service earlier this month. Lots of coverage (including mine) focused on the low price ($4.99 a month) and timing.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized the really big deal here is the free one: buy a Mac, iPhone or iPad, and you'll get a free year of TV+. That sounds cool for Apple fans. I've been one for a very long time, though I'm probably not getting another new device any time soon.

Making the switchover from H. G. Wells to H. P. Lovecraft, director Richard Stanley comes back from the 1996 debacle of losing his long-cherished project, The Island of Doctor Moreau. His new Color Out of Space is a satisfying shot at bringing a classic of the sci-fi/horror genre to modern audiences. Though updated with internet and cellphones that receive alien babble at all the wrong moments, it’s surprisingly faithful to Lovecraft’s original story “The Colour Out of Space” published in Amazing Stories magazine in 1927.
