- Lived with Princess Soraya after they met on the set of The Three Faces (1965). They lived in Rome and their relationship ended with his death.
- Perished along with 114 other people aboard the Alitalia DC-8 (Flight 112) which crashed into Mount Longa at an altitude of 2000 feet (300 feet below the summit) while on a night-time approach to Palermo from Rome. This is to date the worst air crash in Italian aviation history.
