Cinderella (2015)
Beauty Cinderella story
Ella loses her parents and has to live with her stepmother and her daughters. Her stepmother is cruel and her daughters are ugly and bully Ella. She feels grief, however she remember her mother's words and tries to keep kind to everyone, therefore she does not complain about the situation and keeps positive. One day, a prince declares that he decide his wife in a dance party. Her stepmother tries to make her daughter to be a princess and tells Cinderella not to come to the party. Cinderella cries out holding a torn dress which is a keepsake from her mother. Then Cinderella finds out someone is sitting close to her. She is a fairy godmother. She helps her go to the party and spells her. This is a most famous Cinderella story, therefore I does not feel difficulty understanding this story. Instead of this, I watched this film focusing on music, costume and scenes. At first, its songs is so beautiful. I like, especially, "Lavender's Blue," which is sung by Cinderella. In addition to this, Cinderella's blue dress is also beautiful and attracting. The scene where Cinderella puts on the blue dress by spell is astonishing. I like this film so much and I expect the later films to be also the great ones.
Ever After (1998)
Beautiful story
This is a Cinderella story, a famous fairy tale. Daniel is a girl who grows with her father's full of love. The life is so happy; however, suddenly she loses her father because of disease. She feels grief, and what is worse, her stepmother force her to labor as a servant in a house. One day, she encounters a man who rides on a horse, and she misunderstands the man tries to rob her father's horse, therefore, she throws a stone toward him. Later, she realizes he is a prince and she apologizes to him. He is so kind a person and since then the relation between the two gets better. The prince declares that he finds his future wife in a dance party because he does not want to marry a woman his father introduce. His real purpose is to get Daniel. Daniel manages to prepare for the party and goes there. Although she meets the prince again, her stepmother comes out that Daniel is a servant in public. Therefore, the reunion results to fail. However, the prince learns what is a genuine love. The first time I watched this film, I was so impressed and attracted because this is different from Cinderella story I've known. The part which shows such a different thing from what I've known is that Daniel fight for the prince or herself with bad people. A clip where Daniel uses sword is amazing. Such a powerful and beautiful woman is touching my heart. In addition to this, dance party scene is excellent, especially, just when Daniel arrives at the party. This is one of my favorites. I want to watch it again.
Soshite chichi ni naru (2013)
Message, emotion and opinion
Ryota is a successful business person who has a wife and a child. He tries to educate his son in order to make him so intelligence person like Ryota. However, his son does not do anything Ryota gets him to do, therefore, gradually Ryota comes to doubt that the his son is not really his child. DNA analysis discover the fact that the child is not Ryota's real son. In fact, this accident is caused by the hospital where his wife gave birth to his son. They meet the family which has a real child. Both of the couples consult about the resolution, that is, whether they trade their children or they keep the present situation and continue to bring up their not-real child. Ryota manages to deal with this problem with some people, and finally he makes up his mind.
To be brief, this film is masterpiece because this has a message to us, "Which do you choose, if your child does not have a blood tie?" This is so difficult question that the film shows one of the answers. Ryota's worries, opinions and conflicts with people around him. Finally he decides his answer and speaks to his not-real son; this scene is so touching and the message gives us an idea.
I like this movie and I recommend you to watch it.
Hairspray (2007)
Good movie
In Baltimore, there is a big girl who dreams to take part in Corny Collin's Show and dance with a nice guy, Link. The girl's name is Tracy. One day she finds an audition of the TV S\shoe, therefore she manages to ask her mother who is not willing to accept it to allow her to join the audition. However she fails because the judge does not like hoe big body. She is depressed and late for classes because of the audition. She has to stay at school as the punishment, then she meets a great black dancer, Seaweed. He invites her to a dance party and there, she is scouted for the new cast in Cony Collin's Show by the representative. After that, she faces a lot of troubles, discrimination, and she fight for the resolution. The great thing of this film is that it has not only a funny scenes but also an important theme, that is, abolition of discrimination about not only color but also appearance. In this film, there are two contrastive characters. One is Tracy, who is a fat girl but has a sense of equality. The other is Amber, who is a beautiful but has an evil mind. These two character emphasize this theme effectively. I love musicals so much and I love this film, too. Especially, when depressed, this film is the best recommendation.
Into the Woods (2014)
Great Musical
An old witch visits a couple who has no child. She tells them to get four things, a white ox, a red hood, yellow hair and a golden slipper. She also says that if they can bring all of them, she will save them of a curse. The couple tries to get the materials in order to break the curse; however, they faces some accidents and encounter unique characters, such as a red riding hood and Cinderella. I love musical film, therefore, I expected this movie to be a good one. To be brief, I was satisfied with this film, especially the songs. Its songs is sophisticated by the performance. In addition to this, I was touched by the story. Before watching this film, I was attracted by the story line, based on the original fairy tales. Its characters are very comical and sometimes cruel. This is so close to the origins. I favorite a red riding hood, because she is brave and funny. If you like a fairy tale, maybe you will have fun while watching this film. Although this is based on the original fairy tale, the characters of this movie are a little bit different form the origins. In other words, they are arranged; however, when finding the connection between the origins and this arranged features, it is possible to feel attracted.
Okuribito (2008)
Treating a Death
A man who is a cellist belonging to a musical group returns to his home town, because the group breaks up. One day he finds a job advertisement and he likes it. However this job is actually an undertaker, who treats a body and encoffins him. He is torn between cellist and undertaker.
This film can change an image toward an undertaker. It shows their job as a beautiful and great thing. I feel kind of admirable to them.
Treating a death means at the same time thinking about a life. Undertakers put on a lip stick on the lip casting their mind to the past of the body, that is, the time when he or she was alive. The film told me such a thing. Once dealing with bodies was a work for people under discrimination. They were called Eta Hinin, which means dirty and not human. However embalming is now essential work and we should consider them as great workers, I think.
Big Fish (2003)
Talking About a Life
A son does not like his father because he always tells a story about his own life as if he read out a fairy tale. The son considers the story as ridiculous therefore he is fed up with the attitude of his father. However as he listens to the story more times, he little by little understands what his father wants to say.
What the film shows that; regardless of whether it is true or not, when we get on the edge of death, it is important how we can talk about our own life as a great, bright and happy one. The father's smile in the last scene probably means this.
After watching this movie, I cannot help but think about my own life. Though I have not lived for so long, I wonder if I have stories which I will be able to talk to others with smile and proud. Maybe now I do not. From now I will create the story and when I am 80 years old, I hope, I may tell it to my grandchildren.
Dear Frankie (2004)
Affection
This story is about a son and his mother and his fake father. The son does not utter words because he is deaf. He keeps mailing with his father. Actually, the person who replies to his mail is not his father but his mother. She escapes from her husband because of his violence. The son, Frankie, loses his memory of childhood, therefore she plays a good father who is a sailor in the mails. One day, she replies to her son that his father gets the bay near the home. The mother comes up with employing a man who can pretend to be the father.
After watching this film, to be frank, I like this so much. The reason why it became one of my obsessions is its heartwarming story. I cannot tell you the ending, though, I love the ending because when I watched the scene I could feel the affection between not only, of course, Frankie and his mother but also the son and the fake father. Their performances, especially the role of Frankie, are excellent. I was so moved that I want to recommend this film to my friends.
The King's Speech (2010)
Best Partner
This is a story about a king who suffers from stuttering, George, and a man who makes an effort for getting rid of the king's worry, Lionel. George makes an address instead of his father in front of peoples; however, because of his stuttering, he cannot speak well and he lose his popularity from the listeners. Many doctors try to treat him, though, no one can do it. The king's wife asks a man who comes from a colony, Lionel, to see her husband. At first George does not accept him and is angry with him; however, gradually he acknowledges Lionel, and starts their friendship.
While watching this film, I feel a trust and bond between George and Lionel. George is royal and Lionel is a person from a colony, therefore generally it is not usual that they become friends. The fact that they are on a good terms moved me and I also want such a buddy.
In addition, what I consider as great is the scene that Kin George fails to speak in a front of a lot of people. Actually, there is no scene which shows he cannot speak well. However, before the cut we can see his situation, such as much sweat and shakes. I think it is a great way invisible information makes us image a visible picture.
This film is so good that I want to watch it again.
Kokuhaku (2010)
Complicated Relationship
A homeroom teacher, Yuko Moriguchi, suddenly confess a fact to her students. The fact is that her daughter is killed by two of the students. Before leaving out of the class room, she tells them that she will not call officers and already achieves to take a revenge. From the confession, some things are connected complicatedly and it is revealed who is the murderer and what her confession really means.
Before watching this film, actually I have read ts original novel written by Kanae Minato. In the novel, there are some separated parts, and each story is told by different character, Moriguchi, one of her students, murderer A, murderer B, A's mother, and A's sister. Because of it, this film is also based on some narrations by the characters. Therefore, we can watch this movie as if we read a novel. I like the way and the structure based on the original.
This film made me think about what is justice. Is the action which Ms. Moriguchi does to the students really good? My answer is in a sense she is right; however, there are lots of different ideas. I recommend to watch and think about this film.
The Breakfast Club (1985)
Let It Be
On Saturday, five students go to school because their teacher told them to do so. He instructs the students to write compositions about what they are. Since then their friendships start and they review the reasons why they are there and themselves. "What is myself?" The question is so hard to answer that we need some triggers to make us notice what is us. In this film, one of the triggers is new friends who they have never seen. Each of them is an intelligence, princess, athlete, bad boy and a basket case. They tell stories about their own worries to each other and realize that there is nothing wrong with them. While I watched this process that the characters grow up, felt impressed. In addition I remembered my difficult days as in the story. I have also been worried about myself. Then my temper was not steady and I tended to get irritated for anything. The film made me so nostalgic and it is so nice that it shows problems children in real life have. The movie expresses such a complicated situation of students in adolescence very well. I felt sympathy with each character while watching it. I recommend to you that you should watch this film.
Bara prata lite (1997)
Dark Side
A man feels lonely after retiring from his job. He does not have a wife and it also can cause him to think about company to talk with him. He tries to make a conversation with others by speaking to them; however, it does not bear fruits. After he goes back home, he calls some people at random to catch somebody who can talk together. While he is depressed, a woman visits his house and asks him to listen to her about her religion. Anybody feels lonely and wants somebody to be with them. This feeling sometimes can make human fall down to a dark side, that is, do what he or she usually does not do. This film shows such a thing, I think. The ending is unexpected, therefore I was so surprised and feel bad a little actually. Though I felt so, this film is really nice because it can betray my expectation in a sense. I recommend that you try to anticipate the ending while watching this movie. I think you also may be deceived by this film.
Porcelain Unicorn (2010)
Unfogettable Memory
The story is about an event in Germany in the middle of World War Ⅱ. Three children trespass on a house and search for something useful. Then they hear a sound from inside a piece of furniture. All the boys except for one feel scared and run out of the house. The boy left alone enters where the strange noise comes from and sees a Jewish girl. In her hands there is a little unicorn. They feel something about each other, however, the German military comes. He tells her to escape from the house, and she leaves the unicorn behind. Time passes, the boy becomes elderly and he brings an identical unicorn to a house. The film has a little dialogue and no explanation, therefore it is a little mysterious story. However, it exactly shows us what the story tells. One of the important points of this movie is the unicorn, I believe. What does it mean? I think the unicorn shows the bond between the German boy and the Jewish girl. Therefore the theme of the film is "peace." It is moving enough to feel sad and a little heartwarming. I love this short film because of the sophisticated story and the message of the unicorn.
La rivière du hibou (1961)
Desire
On a bridge, an execution of a man is concluded. He feels more and more fear of death as time passes. However the execution fortunately fails, therefore he desperately escapes from the people who try to kill him. He thinks of his wife while swimming and running away, and he dreams to reunite with her. The film's theme I think is gladness of living because it has some messages in itself. One of them is the sound of birds. We can hear the voice of a variety of birds when we watch the movie. In addition to this, some animals appear, such as a spider and a snake. All of them stand for living contrasted with the dying man, I believe. Moreover, when he finally arrives on land from river, he grabs the sand strongly. This scene may show us the gladness of living. The good point of this film is to show the man's feeling with non-verbal message. Because of the feature there is an opportunity ti think over and the film itself becomes attractive. Therefore I like this film very much.
Whacked (1998)
Sounds, Noise and Face Expression
A film with no dialogue is generally watched focusing on its effect and faces of the cast, therefore each viewer has a individual reviews of the film. My review is also one of a lot of thoughts on the movie, "Whacked!" In the first half of the film, lots of people walking around or talking by phone on a street fall down. In these scenes we cannot know the reason. this movie starts in such a mysterious way.
To be brief, I do not like this story; however, the way to express feelings and show the situation is so great because the order of the scenes is deliberate, I believe. As I wrote above, this film begins at a point which give us unreal and terrible pictures of pedestrians falling down. At this point, we cannot help but think why they suddenly fall down in the street. In other words, in the first half, our mind is caught by the film. In addition, at the last it enables us to know the reason, and what is more we then feel satisfied as if we have achieved something.
To sum up, this movie is sophisticated, especially in how it catches our attention. Though I did not feel satisfied by this film, I was impressed.
