Denmark has finally started addressing the lack of diversity in local movies and TV series. From afar, the country is the epitome of liberalism and home to provocative filmmakers like Lars von Trier and a new wave of directors with foreign origins, such as Ali Abassi (“Holy Spider”) and Milad Alami (“The Charmer”).
But up close, the Nordic country has been sliding to the far right and enacting Europe’s harshest anti-immigration laws, pushing the local film community to react. The alarm was recently rung by A Bigger Picture, a female-led advocacy group spearheaded by Laura Allen Müller (“Borgen”), Sandra Yi Sencindiver (“The Wheel of Time”), Malaika B. Mosendane (“Chosen”), Siir Tilif (“Fatal Crossing”) and Dorcas Joanna Hansen (“Elvira”).
Along with newspaper articles and appearances on TV shows, the campaign triggered the most vivid reactions when it flagged the all-white casts of three high-profile Danish productions, including Von Trier’s “The Kingdom series.

The Danes may have surpassed the French in clashing with streamers.
The Danish Producers’ Association and Create Denmark, the guild representing writers, actors and directors, among others, have been involved in a bitter dispute over fees and rights with local and global streaming services including Netflix and Viaplay since January.
While Viaplay signed a temporary agreement over the summer which is valid through December, other services, including Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and Amazon Prime have fully stopped the development or production of Danish content since January. The estimated loss of revenue for the country is approximately 200 million, according to Lene Børglum, a leading producer in Denmark whose credits includes Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Only God Forgives” and “Copenhagen Cowboy” which Netflix had ordered way before the start of the dispute. The series world premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

It took a pandemic and a lockdown for “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn to make a directorial comeback in Denmark, where he had delivered the “Pusher” trilogy early in his career.
“Sometimes the strangest things come in mysterious ways, and this is one of those,” Refn says of “Copenhagen Cowboy,” his Netflix original series, slated to world premiere Sept. 9 at the Venice Film Festival.
Since “Drive,” Winding Refn has directed the Bangkok-set thriller “Only God Forgives,” with “Drive” star Ryan Gosling; “The Neon Demon,” with Elle Fanning playing an aspiring model in Los Angeles.; and the Amazon Prime Video series “Too Old to Die Young,” starring Miles Teller as a grieving cop in crime-ridden Southern California. He was preparing another project set abroad when the pandemic hit.

Broken English Productions, the Latinx production arm of financier Grandave Capital, is boarding “The Monster Within,” the elevated genre film from Chile’s Forastero.
The move follows the worldwide sales rights pick up of Forastero’s “My Tender Matador” by Grandave Capital’s sales arm, Grandave Int’l, at the Venice Film Festival.
“As we want to finance high quality projects, it was an easy decision to continue to do business with Forastero,” said Grandave Capital president Stanley Preschutti, adding: “When you see the additional production companies involved with ‘The Monster Within’ and the projects they have done, that decision was even easier.”
Broken English Productions joins a team of European, North American and Latin American co-producers that apart from Forastero include Denmark’s Space Rocket Nation, the label of Lene Børglum and Nicolas Winding Refn; Canada’s 1976 Productions and Argentina’s Tornado Cine, founded by producers Alejandro Israel and Ezequiel Borovinsky.

Barcelona — “Hellboy’s” Ron Perlman will feature as the special guest at this year’s 4th Sitges Pitchbox, replacing last year’s star mentor, Guillermo del Toro.
Rapidly emerging as one of the coolest events on Spain’s industry event circuit, organized by online platform Filmarket Hub, the Sitges Pitchbox will take place Oct. 5 during this year’s Sitges Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, a mecca for fanboys and a trendy crowd of cinema-goers from Barcelona.
Perlman, an articulate and cultured actor as likely to quote Shakespeare as a genre movie in interviews, looks set to deliver some advice to the producer-directors pitching genre projects at the event and a packed audience.
Widely known for, if often hardly recognizable in, movies such as “Hellboy’,” Perlman’s works include TV series “Sons of Anarchy,” “Hand of God” – which he starred in and produced for Amazon Studios– and “Beauty and the Beast,...

“The Monster Within,” a banner Latin American smart genre project that won a Sitges Fest Pitchbox competition, has now attracted further validation: European and North American co-production backing, and the attachment of Luis Tosar to play the main character.
Chilean Rodrigo Susarte’s awaited feature debut, “The Monster Within” will be produced by Chile’s Forastero, headed by Florencia Larrea and Gregorio Gonzalez.
Now also producing are Space Rocket Nation, the label of Lene Børglum and Nicolas Winding Refn; Tosar’s Spain-based ZircoZine; and Canada’s 1976 Productions, run by Nicolas Comeau.
Larrea, Gonzalez, Børglum, ZircoCine’s Farruco Castroman and Corneau serve as producers. Lucas Engel and Macarena Concha executive produce.
It is highly unusual for a Latin American genre movie to attract such large co-production interest from other countries. A “coming-of-age horror-thriller” taking place in the spectacular forests of Chile’s southern Bio Bio region, Larrea said, “The Monster Within...

A number of emerging Danish filmmakers are embracing a new Diy attitude, as evidenced by some exciting debuts at Copenhagen’s Cph Pix festival this week. It might not be an identifiable new wave, but it marks a new ethos.
One leading example of this Diy spirit is Thomas Daneskov’s feature debut The Elite (Eliten), produced by Lina Flint. Daneskov is just 26 years old, Flint 27.
Daneskov cut his teeth on music videos and the well-travelled, award-winning short film Puff, Puff, Pass. After being rejected, twice, from the National Film School of Denmark, he decided to just make a feature outside ‘the system’ (without applying for public funding from the Danish Film Institute).
“We just wanted to get it done, we wanted that total creative freedom,” he says. “It’s a story about youth and we wanted to do it while we are still young. It could have taken years to get ‘big money’ to do it.”

Paris-based Indie Sales has acquired international rights to Danish director Bo Mikkelsen’s upcoming horror thriller What We Become ahead of the Afm.
The feature, shot in Mikkelsen’s hometown of Sorgenfri in the suburbs of Copenhagen, revolves around a family’s fight to survive after a virulent strain of flu breaks out prompting panic amid the population.
The Johanssons are forced into quarantine in their home but when they come under attack from a riotous, bloodthirsty mob they are forced to take extreme measures to escape alive.
The film, which has just wrapped, marks Mikkelsen’s feature debut after a number of shorts including the well-travelled Tabu, which was produced by Nicolas Winding Refn and Lene Børglum at Space Rocket Nation.

Reuniting Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling following their masterful work on Drive, Only God Forgives has long been one of our most anticipated films of the year.
Following its debut at Cannes in the spring, the film is heading into Us cinemas this month, and will be with us in the UK at the start of next month. And with its release date so close on both sides of the Atlantic, Lionsgate have released a brilliant new UK trailer.
Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty.

Only God Forgives marks the reunion of one of the most memorable collaborations in recent memory, with Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling coming together once more after their work on 2011’s Drive.
Their last film together is by far one of my favourite from the past few years, and perhaps of all time, and so you can understand why I’m really looking forward to Only God Forgives.
With its Us release date fast approaching, Radius released a new trailer for the film earlier in the month. And now Lionsgate have released the UK quad poster, featuring Gosling beautifully neon-lit like the American one-sheet.

Following their collaboration on one of the most memorable films in recent years, Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling will be back once more this summer for Only God Forgives, the anticipated follow-up to 2011’s Drive.
Their reunion is something I’ve been looking forward to ever since the film was announced, and it’s no surprise that I’m counting down the days until it lands.
After catching a great new neon-lit poster for the film last night, with Gosling front and centre, Radius have released a brilliant new trailer via Yahoo Movies ahead of its Stateside release next month.

Reuniting the dream team from Drive, with director Nicolas Winding Refn and leading man Ryan Gosling, Only God Forgives is understandably abuzz with anticipation.
Set to hit cinemas next month, the film premiered out in Cannes last month, and I cannot wait for its wide theatrical release. Following the latest character poster we’ve seen this week comes a new poster for the movie via Yahoo Movies, with Gosling beautifully neon-lit. And as if that wasn’t sweet enough, we can expect a new trailer to hit tomorrow as well.

Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives is, without a doubt, one of my most anticipated films of the year.
The movie marks the director’s follow-up to Drive, and sees him reuniting with Ryan Gosling to make what promises to be another incredibly memorable film.
Craig was fortunate enough to see the film at its Cannes debut – you can read our review here – and the countdown is very much on for its arrival a little later this summer.
With its Us release date little more than a month away, Collider have released a new character poster for the movie, giving us a look at one of Gosling’s co-stars, Vithaya Pansringarm.

Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling will be heading to Cannes once more this month, reuniting after the immense Drive for the highly anticipated Only God Forgives.
Winding Refn and Gosling were so incredibly in sync on Drive that you can only expect more brilliant things from Only God Forgives.
We’ve already seen three brilliant trailers for the film so far, along with a beautiful French poster last month. And with its debut on the Croisette just days away, another beautifully blue-tinted French poster has surfaced online.

Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives was amongst the handful of brilliant films announced this morning as premiering at this year’s 66th Cannes Film Festival.

The first trailer arrived earlier this month, giving us a terrific first look at the upcoming movie, followed more recently by a neon-infused teaser poster. And following this morning’s premiere announcement, two new international trailers have surfaced online.

After working together on Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling have reunited to bring us Only God Forgives. Following the immensity of their first time working together, the film is understandably one of the most anticipated of the year.
We had been hoping that Winding Refn might debut the film at Venice or Tiff last year, but it’s now looking like a Cannes debut might be on the cards for the writer-director once more. And now Yahoo Movies have debuted a brilliant first red-band trailer.

Watch the red band movie trailer for Only God Forgives, starring Ryan Gosling in the film from Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn. This is an intense drama about Thai boxing, drug cartels, revenge and justice in the criminal underworld of Bangkok, and also includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm, Tom Burke and Yayaying. Refn helms and writes the crime thriller which is produced by Lene Børglum. Presented by FilmDistrict, and distributed by Radius TWC Stateside, with no set release date as yet, but folks in France, Denmark, Sweden and Norway can catch it in May. With this director star combination, which delivered, in my opinion, one of the most outstanding films of all time in Drive, one can't go wrong.

Reuniting after the immensity that is Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling will be back this year to bring us Only God Forgives.
We had been hoping that this would be debuting at Venice or Tiff late last year, but it’s now looking increasingly likely that it will be premiering out in Cannes in May.
We saw the first teaser footage from the film at the start of the year. And now a handful of new images have been released over at AlloCiné, giving us another brilliant look at the leading players for Only God Forgives.
