As the Internet is now learning, Glen Powell had a tiny role in 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ playing a trader at the Gotham Stock exchange who ends up a victim of Bane’s (Tom Hardy) wrath. What fans of the film might not know is that Hardy actually slammed Powell’s head into the keyboard on the final take.
Speaking with IMDb, Powell recalled how things went sideways. “He’s supposed to give me a little bit of a tap on the back of the head. So, we did it a few times. We all nail it. It was great. And then this last time … he just slammed my head on the keyboard. And I remember just, like, getting kind of dazed.”
But Powell chalked it up to both actors being immersed in their roles. “I think we all just got kind of caught up in it,” he said.
According to Powell, cinematographer Wally Pfister then joked that he forgot to roll camera, prompting director Christopher Nolan to ask, “You think you can do it again just like that?”
Powell’s response? “Absolutely!”
Nolan then let him off the hook, admitting, “We’re kidding. Go see a medic.”
To celebrate the premiere of Netfix’s ‘Hit Man,’ Powell sat down with IMDb to throw the Ultimate Watch Party by choosing snacks and essentials for screening the film at home.

In addition to his Bane encounter, he talked how he and Sydney Sweeney brought realism to their romantic comedy ‘Anyone But You,’ and shared what it’s like collaborating with frequent collaborator director Richard Linklater.

What’s going on with season two of HBO’s highly acclaimed, much-anticipated “The Last Of Us,” pandemic-zombie series that made an even bigger star out of Pedro Pascal? Currently, “The Last Of Us” is expected to return sometime in 2025, and in a new Deadline interview, showrunners and directors Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have shared some new details.

The Acolyte is off to a promising start on Disney+.
The new Star Wars series launched on June 4 with two episodes, generating 4.8M views in its first day on the streamer. That makes it the biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year.
Disney+ doesn’t generally release viewership data for series after just one day of streaming. In August, the streamer said that Ahsoka drew 14M views in its first 5 days. As of now, The Acolyte is on track to zoom right past that benchmark, but it’ll need to sustain similar viewership over the weekend in order to do so.
The streamer can be a bit inconsistent with its viewership data, generally. When Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted in December, Disney+ announced that series’ six-day viewership tally. However, releasing the viewership for one single day of viewing does indicate that Disney+ feels quite confident in The Acolyte‘s ability to keep performing well.

Feathers McGraw is back!
The dastardly penguin supervillain is following in the stop-motion footsteps of fellow animation antagonist Mrs. Tweedy and making a grand return to screens, this time in the latest “Wallace and Gromit” feature. Whereas Tweedy, arch-nemesis in Aardman’s 2000 hit “Chicken Run” came back for last year’s sequel “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget,” McGraw is returning almost 40 years after he was seen in 1993’s Oscar-winning short “Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trouser” for “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.”
Details of the new Aardman film — which was first announced in 2022 — have now been revealed, as has a teaser showing McGraw in all his evil glory.
“Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” will premiere this Christmas on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Outside of the U.K., the film will be available globally on Netflix.

India enjoyed a record year at the Cannes Film Festival — winning three major awards and an honor — and this is likely to have a positive impact on the country’s independent cinema scene, according to industry experts.
Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” won the competition grand prix, Anasuya Sengupta was awarded best actress at the festival’s Un Certain Regard strand for “The Shameless” and Chidananda S. Naik’s “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know” was crowned the best film at the La Cinef section. In addition, Indian DoP Santosh Sivan was this year’s recipient of the annual Pierre Angénieux ExcelLens in Cinematography award conferred during the festival.
“All We Imagine as Light” was the first Indian film in competition in three decades, since Shaji N. Karun’s “Swaham” in 1994. “Sister Midnight” was a Directors’ Fortnight selection, “Santosh” screened at Un Certain Regard and “Girls Will Be Girls,...

Death takes the most unexpected of forms in “Tuesday,” a sui generis debut from Croatian director Daina O. Pusić. Her strikingly original, if occasionally counterintuitive film brings the central idea of Ingmar Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal” into the modern era — trying to stall Death, if only for a matter of hours — anchored by a committed performance from a curiously miscast Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
According to Pusić’s singular imagination, Death isn’t a scythe-wielding skeleton, nor a winged figure in a pitch-black plague cloak. Rather, it appears as a ruddy-colored, computer-generated macaw with a rumbling Darth Vader-esque bass (performed by Arinzé Kene), his words low like glaciers calving, and a syntax like Jabba the Hutt. Why a macaw? It seems that these exotic parrots are harbingers of death in some cultures. This one — an intimidating red bird that can shrink and swell at will — hears the cries of dying...

A quarter-century after lending his voice to Z in Disney’s CG feature “Antz,” Woody Allen is set to return to the recording booth and narrate the upcoming Spanish animated short “Mr. Fischer’s Chair,” which will formally add several key co-producers during this year’s Annecy Festival. The film’s directors have also given Variety an exclusive look at early concept art for the project.
“Mr. Fischer’s Chair” revisits the 1972 World Chess Championship, where Bobby Fischer faced off against Boris Spassky. During game 17 of their “Match of the Century,” the Soviet team accused the Americans of manipulating Fischer’s chair to maliciously harm his opponent, leading to an exhaustive examination of the Eames Executive seat.
The film is created and directed by filmmakers and producers Xosé Zapata and Lorenzo Degl’ Innocenti, who recently teamed on the Spanish Academy Goya Award-winning animated short “The Monkey.” Zapata is handling the screenplay.

China’s unwitting creative phenom Yang Zhigang, known as Busifan, presents an imaginative, heartwarming and gleefully chaotic animated journey in his latest feature, “The Storm,” selected to screen in main competition at this year’s Annecy Festival.
The auteur previously worked in telecommunications and never formally studied filmmaking, yet emerged as a self-taught cult figure on China’s animation circuit via its Flash scene in 2004 with “The Black Bird,” a seven-act episodic that craftily followed a wary warrior and his avian aide.
With his brutal and defiant debut feature, 2017’s “The Guardian” (“Dahufa”), Busifan disconnected from the rules imposed by the commercial market as he sussed out his inner turmoil for the script. This solidified him as a boundary-breaking artist, and the film’s simmering success served to bolster the region’s independent movement and further out-of-the-box concepts.

In 1980s Poland, Tadeusz Baranowski’s comic books stood out by a mile, full of color, absurd humor, and odd characters. Now, director Wojtek Wawszczyk is referencing them in his hybrid CG/live-action animated feature Diplodocus, which screens in this year’s Annecy Presents sidebar at the iconic French festival.
“That’s how I started to draw – I was copying these comics! I discovered them as a 6-year-old. Without them, I wouldn’t be doing this,” he told Variety ahead of the film’s debut.
He first met Baranowski – who has a cameo in the film – as a student. Soon, a friendship was forged.
“I actually approached him back then, 20 years ago, and said I would like to bring his comics to the screen one day. Last December, I showed him and his wife Ania the almost-finished film. They told me the spirit of Baranowski is present in every frame.

In June 2022, Jason Herbison was on set shooting what was to be the 8,903rd — and final — episode of “Neighbours,” an experience he admits was “very, very emotional.” The cult Australian soap opera — a show he first starting writing for after leaving high school in 1990 and came to oversee as its top exec producer — was coming to a tearful end.
Two years on, almost to the day, and Herbison is now on a short trip to L.A. to see if “Neighbours” — which recently announced that “Selling Sunset” favorite Chrishell Stause is joining the cast — wins a daytime Emmy on Friday from its first-ever nomination.

Madrid-based Begin Again Films has nabbed Santiago Maza’s Mexican documentary “State of Silence,” produced by Diego Luna and La Corriente del Golfo, the shingle he runs with Gael García Bernal.
The sales agency and distributor, which acquired international rights with the exception of North America and Latin America, has also unveiled the film’s first trailer.
“State of Silence,” which traces the harrowing stories of four journalists who risk their lives in pursuit of truth and transparency in Mexico, will have its world premiere simultaneously this month at the Tribeca and Guadalajara Film Festivals before competing at the Sheffield Film Festival for its European premiere.

Detailing the endangered state of press freedom in Mexico, the documentary follows the journalists’ journeys as they navigate treacherous terrain in their effort to shed light on the enduring suffering and anxiety experienced by their fellow citizens two decades after the so-called war on drugs began.

Here in the U.K., Swiftmania is upon us: the pop superstar kicks off the first of 15 concerts in Britain on Friday night.
Projected to contribute a whopping 997 million pounds (or $1.26 billion) to the U.K. economy, Taylor Swift officially descends on Edinburgh as thousands flock to the Scottish capital, donning sparkles, handmade bracelets, and cowboy boots – the mark of the Eras Tour.
Her popularity has skyrocketed in recent years thanks to the re-record of her entire discography, including 1989, Red, and Speak Now – all Taylor’s Versions. The more recently released The Tortured Poets Department has made its way onto the setlist.
Ticket costs are in the thousands. The Pennsylvania-born star has sold out her shows worldwide. She is second only to The Beatles with the most weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. Everyone’s asking the same question: Why is she so popular? Her peers have an idea.

After $2 billion spent and a lengthy construction process complicated by the pandemic, the Walt Disney Co. threw open the doors Thursday to its sprawling Fantasy Springs addition to the Tokyo Disney Resort. Spanning 1.5 million square feet and comprising new areas inspired by the Frozen, Tangled and Peter Pan franchises, the expansion is a pillar project under Disney’s 10-year, $60 billion investment plan for its global theme parks. It’s also the largest addition in Japan since the Tokyo resort opened over 40 years ago as Disney’s first major international destination.
Signaling the significance of the unveiling, Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, were both on hand to celebrate the moment alongside executives from Oriental Land, Disney’s Japanese partner and the park’s operator.

Celebrated Spanish filmmaker María Trénor’s debut feature “Rock Bottom” will premiere in the main competition at this year’s Annecy Festival, and she has given Variety exclusive access to the film’s first trailer.
Produced by leading Catalan producer Alba Sotorra, the film is inspired by the life and music of U.K. artist Robert Wyatt. Trippy rotoscope animation interspersed with experimental segments tells a story set in the decadent 1970s in both New York and Mallorca. Wyatt’s album “Rock Bottom” scores a paradise-like beach story overflowing with art, flirtation, and recreational drugs. The film deftly weaves the fantasy experiences of Bob and his partner Alif in the two cities, creating a single time and place that could only exist in fiction. Or on a really good trip.
Variety recently caught up with Tenor to discuss her feature debut ahead of its Annecy world premiere.

Of all the heady-cool, matrix-of-reality, the-digital-future-is-now movies released in 1999, “Run Lola Run” may have been the 1999iest. Sure, “The Matrix” was the sci-fi landmark that bullet-timed audiences into the 21st century. But science-fiction movies have always looked ahead. That’s their job. (Maybe the first true movie of 1999 was “2001: A Space Odyssey.”) “Run Lola Run” was a candy-colored punk Berlin fantasia set in this world, and that was its glory.
The movie is being rereleased, starting Friday, June 7, in a new 4K version to mark the 25th anniversary of its release in America. (It came out in Germany the year before.) And what a difference a quarter of a century makes! The days of our lives now run on digital kinetic energy. Our imaginations hum and click to the mutating magic of technological possibility. When we don’t like reality, we reset it. “Run Lola Run” foresaw all that,...

Tyler Perry penned an op-ed on Wednesday speaking out against alleged racial discrimination experienced by his friends, comedians Eric André and Clayton English.
In his column, published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Perry addresses a lawsuit filed earlier this year alleging that both André and English were unlawfully stopped by authorities at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Earlier this year, Perry and several other actors — including Jamie Foxx, Taraji P. Henson, Sterling K. Brown and Rege-Jean Page — filed a friend-of-the-court brief as part of the suit.
“André and English were targeted and stopped by Clayton County Police Department (Ccpd) officers, several months apart, on jet bridges in Atlanta’s airport while they were steps from boarding their flights,” Perry wrote.
Despite the fact that both men had been cleared by Tsa security, Perry wrote that the comedians were approached in plain-clothed police officers, alleging they were targeted because of “the color of their skin.

Sabrina Carpenter released the music video for her newest single, “Please Please Please,” on Thursday afternoon, and the new song’s visuals feature Carpenter’s real-life boyfriend, Barry Keoghan.
The video, directed by Bardia Zeinali, shows Keoghan repeatedly getting arrested following incidents robbing banks and fighting other men, only for Carpenter to continue returning to jail to collect her boyfriend upon his release.
“Heartbreak is one thing / my ego’s another,” Carpenter sings in the song’s chorus. “I beg you, don’t embarrass me, motherfucker / Please, please, please.”
The video ends with Carpenter handcuffing her boyfriend to a chair and taping over his mouth.
Jack Antonoff, the Bleachers lead singer and frequent Taylor Swift collaborator, produced the single. Carpenter announced earlier this week her sixth album, Short n Sweet, will arrive August 23. “Please Please Please” is the second single, following viral hit “Espresso,” released in April.

Consumers suing the NFL opened a trial on Thursday that’ll decide whether the league’s broadcast model violates antitrust laws by highlighting a stark contrast between it and the other four professional sports leagues: Viewers who want to watch games that aren’t broadcast locally must purchase Sunday Ticket. This means that Kansas City Chiefs fans living in Los Angeles must pay hundreds of dollars per year at allegedly inflated prices to watch their favorite team play. There’s no offering that allows them to just watch Chiefs games.
“If you’re a fan that wants to watch a game in the local market other than the three to four being aired,” said Amanda Bonn, a lawyer for the class said, “you can’t go buy a single game” and are forced to buy the entire Sunday Ticket premium package.

“The Acolyte,” Disney+’s newest Star Wars series, reached 4.8 million views in its first day of availability. This marks the streamer’s biggest series premiere of 2024, according to Disney.
An exact first-day viewership total isn’t available for “Ahsoka,” the most recent Star Wars series, though Disney did report that it took five days to reach 14 million views. That comes out to an average of 2.8 million viewers per day — 2 million below the launch of “The Acolyte.” (Note: a “view” is calculated by dividing the number of hours each title is watched by its runtime.)

Legendary’s Monsterverse has found a new master of disaster. The studio has tapped Grant Sputore to direct the next theatrical outing in the franchise following March’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Sputore came up from the world of commercials, and as a features director helmed the sci-fi movie I Am Mother, starring Hilary Swank. The film bowed at Sundance before hitting Netflix in 2019.
The new Monstervese feature is described as a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong and an assortment of other Titans. The script comes from prolific genre scribe Dave Callaham, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Sputore’s hiring follows news that Adam Wingard would not return after directing both the latest installment and Godzilla vs. Kong (2022). Upon the release of Godzilla x Kong, Wingard told The Hollywood Reporter he hoped to return for another film to complete a trilogy,...

Scarfe died April 28 of colon cancer at his home in Longueuil, Quebec, his family announced.
Survivors include his son, actor Jonathan Scarfe (ER, Raising the Bar, Hell on Wheels, Van Helsing).
Born in England and raised in Vancouver, Scarfe portrayed the Romulans Tokath and Admiral Mendak on episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1991 and 1993 and was another alien, the powerful Magistrate Augris, on a 1995 installment of Star Trek: Voyager.
“Science fiction on film and television, especially if you are playing some kind of alien character with fantastic make-up, is great for actors with a strong stage background,” he said in a 2007 interview. “The productions need that kind of size and intensity of performance.

Daniel Brühl and his portrayal of the late, iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld in new Disney+ series Becoming Karl Lagerfeld were in the spotlight on Thursday at a screening of the first two episodes at the cinema at Selfridges in London.
During a Q&a after the screening, the star said he had to laugh at first when he was asked to take on the role. “I laughed for 30 seconds,” he admitted. “And then I said, ‘This is absurd.’ And then I thought, ‘Hold on, that could actually be kind of interesting.'”

That was the message sent Thursday by CBS chief George Cheeks, who last month was also tapped as one of three CEOs to steer Paramount Global through a period that is sure to be challenging no matter what happens with the company.
Cheeks acknowledged the merger and sale activity that has swirled around Paramount Global for nearly nine months during his keynote address at Variety‘s FYC Fest daylong conference held at West Hollywood’s 1 Hotel.

A prominent Hollywood marketing and branding guru has raised eyebrows by telling staffers that they should refrain from working with anyone who is “posting against Israel.”
Ashlee Margolis, founder of the Beverly Hills firm The A List, wrote an email to her staff about a new mandate to hit “pause on working with any celebrity or influencer or tastemaker posting against Israel.” The company, which is a fixture on red carpets and is at the forefront of brand integration with celebrities, works with such companies as CAA, UTA, Lede Company and Wolf Kasteler Public Relations.
In the email, Margolis stressed that there was a distinction between what she deemed acceptable and unacceptable social media posts about the country and its current military operations in Gaza. “Anyone saying Israel is committing a ‘genocide’ is someone we will pause on working with, as that is simply not true,” the veteran marketing executive wrote.

There are endless challenges to getting an indie feature-length animated film made: Lack of money, not enough time, fruitless rewrites, a vision that can’t get across the finish line. When asked what the biggest challenge was while making their upcoming comedy “Mars,” co-writers and voice actors Sam Brown and Zach Cregger can’t help but riff an answer to a question that inelegantly ignores the elephant in the room.

Star Wars tends to enjoy the comfort of the known. As the galaxy has expanded on the big and small screens, new stories have been told in and around the original, prequel and sequel trilogies, featuring familiar faces and settings that the audience has had a connection to since childhood in most cases. There’s certainly nothing wrong with this level of familiarity. It’s something we all crave from time to time — and not just in Star Wars — be it a family recipe that’s been passed down through multiple generations, or an old, perfect-fitting sweatshirt that’s survived countless washes.
But there comes a time when viewers want to step into the unknown, and the latest Star Wars series, The Acolyte, offers exactly that. Set a century before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in the era of the High Republic, the Leslye Headland-created Disney+ series explores a time...

The BBC has officially unveiled the return of one of the U.K.’s favorite duos: Wallace & Gromit.
The pair are back and set for a brand new adventure, made by independent studio Aardman Animations, which will premiere on the BBC and BBC iPlayer this Christmas, as well as heading to Netflix worldwide this winter.
The new film, titled Vengeance Most Fowl, will be 70 minutes long and feature the return of the iconic supervillain Feathers McGraw, who is now back for revenge following his appearance in the Oscar-winning 1993 short The Wrong Trousers.
In Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Gromit becomes increasingly concerned over Wallace’s dependence on his inventions. Things take a turn for the worst when Wallace’s creation “smart gnome” seems to develop an evil mind of its own. “As events begin to spiral out of control, it’s up to Gromit to put aside his qualms and battle sinister forces,...

Four years ago, Rebel Moon filmmaker Zack Snyder and producing partner and wife Deborah Snyder met with Netflix executives to discuss possibilities in animation.
The medium was growing fast inside the company, as fast as its subscriber base. One exec threw out the idea of doing something with Norse mythology. Zack Snyder, who had spent much of his career making movies with grand mythological overtones, took to it. Partnering with storyboard artist and animation director Jay Oliva, the Snyders eventually came up with a love and revenge story titled Twilight of the Gods.
“We pitched them an outline; they had a few notes but they let us have free reign,” Deborah Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter at a Netflix animation event Thursday. “They had no guardrails, no limitations.”
That lack of guardrails or limitations may be the best way to describe the free-wheeling, anything and everything goes ethos that has overtaken Netflix’s animation arm.

Zack Snyder and Nathan Lane were among the filmmakers and cast members that joined Netflix’s animation presentation to preview a full slate of upcoming animated features and series, during an event held Thursday in Hollywood, just days before the start of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
“I love mythology,” said Snyder as he introduced a first look at his adult series “Twilight of the Gods.” On a scale like this, I feel like animation was the greatest way to tell the story.” The cast includes Sylvia Hoeks, Stuart Martin, Pilou Asbaek, John Noble, Paterson Joseph, Rahul Kohli, Jamie Clayton,...
