Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)
Great Movie
Truly an enjoyable and memorable picture made SO wonderful by Tracy and Hepburn's performances, Poitier is amazing, so it is a miracle that he fell in love with the simple minded air headed boring girl full of put on voices and put on faces. The maid and Poitier's parents performance are amazing. The father full of indignation and the mother filled with the joy of seeing her son so happy- just fantastic performances all around. If only Hepburn had not insisted on putting her talentless niece in the pivotal role of the daughter it would have been a perfect movie. Her wooden and mannequin-like moves and performance and conversation put one in mind of a 22nd century android. No feeling, no emotion, but moves and talks. How strange she never got another role! For Poitier to act INTERESTED in her, let alone in love should have won him an academy award. And PS- If she is only 20 years old, I would have to say she must have been a serious change of life baby for Ms. Hepburn, who are more grand parents age to Joey's 20 than parents.
The Baby Dance (1998)
The Baby Dance
Absolutely fantastic picture, incredible performances by all concerned as well as great direction. SPOILER: I was hugely disappointed though that the potential adoptive dad turned out to be so shallow. Given only the CHANCE that there may be a problem, he just can't handle it. Obviously this was a couple who shouldn't have children, since obviously they would have had difficulty should they have had a child of their own with potential problems. I was THRILLED that they decided not to adopt in future since God already knew what we had to see in the movie, some folks shouldn't have children. If there were an academy award for these folks I know of no one in the picture who shouldn't get one. I disagree that Laura Dern (Wanda) came across as a double digit iq. She may not have the book learning and she may be a trailer person, but she demonstrated great wisdom in dealing with many situations, the adoption, her husband's abuse of her, the money problems, the final conflict, which she saw, possibly more clearly than Rachel! Anyway, an all around great picture.
