Twenty Twenty-Four (2016)
Mesmerising, Masterful and Misunderstood
Let's start with the obvious. This isn't going to be a film for everyone. But for anyone who wants to be challenged by a genuinely gripping film look no further. I was recommended this by a friend who knows I like films with a psychological edge. And boy does this film have a psychological edge! In a way the premise is the least interesting thing about the film. Though I expect that may have been the point. Because this film is really about atmosphere and how it slowly cranks up the tension.
I'm not surprised this film seems to be polarising people. It takes way too many risks to be a crowdpleaser. But that's also what I admire about it. It's confident enough to take those risks regardless. This film is brilliantly directed because it uses sleight of hand to blend together several different layers all at the same time. It's intense!
And it has one of the most ambiguous endings I've ever seen. I've read a lot of people say they hate the ending because it doesn't give you answers. But for me it didn't matter. I think it's up to the viewer to fill in the blank and come to your own conclusion on what you've just watched. In fact the ending was so jaw-dropping I was thinking about it well into the next day. The experience really stayed with me. And when there's so many uninspired films on a production line these days, isn't that enough? Give it a couple of years and this will be a cult film.
