The Transporter (2002)
Yeah... about the rules
First of all - the style. It's badass. Sound design is very good as well. Love it.
And talking about the guy himself. A nice suit, fast car, manners and some rules to follow. Jason is born to be that person he is portraying here. The choreography in the action scenes is cool, doesn't seem like it was much trouble for Jason to perform them. Although, one fight sequence in particular was chopped in a final version of the film for an unknown reason, but it is still enjoyable after all.
Well, it is actually one of my favorite films, even though it's not loved by critics that much. I've watched it countless times almost since it came out and still having fun doing it over again.
The Cable Guy (1996)
A Horror comedy.
First of all as I can tell by the rating displayed, it is very undervalued. From the beginning I felt like it is going to be a fun comedy with marvelous Jim Carrey performance. And trust me, this guy always gets my jaw dropped by his body movement, facial expressions, the right voice tones for every situation he's given. The Cable Guy is the film where Jim shines once again (as always).
Many actors made cameos during some scenes and it felt super fun to watch them. The story gradually goes into darkness as film continues. It slowly starts to become a gloom comedy I would say, the atmosphere changes into being obscure and terrifying. What will The Cable Guy do next?
Commando (1985)
Como estas.
I absolutely love it. The story is as simple as it is. Bad guys try to kill the good guy. Which is a common characteristic of an action film from 80s. It doesn't make it bad. I would love to watch it back when it was initially released.
Arnold is a genius, always thought that way. The accent, uncomplicated facial expressions, catch phrases, body movement in front of the camera, spot on. Seems like a lot of things came back from The Terminator, at least it reminds of it. Alongside a decent action happening on the screen there's also a good comedy. Every catch phrase Arnold says is music to my ears. So badass.
Not without downsides, some scenes didn't pass the test of time. Personally, I think there are too many episodes of doubles doing stunts which could be easily distinguishable from the original actors and some of those stunts are not that hard to manage for actors themselves.
Spider-Man (2002)
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
Well, where do I start? Simply don't know. It is really hard because this film is one my favourite of all time and still, 20 years later it gives me chills from watching. The intro, music, characters, visuals, story - spot on. Raimi completely nailed it. Sometimes it feels like Tim Burtons "Batman" back from 1989. Especially during rain sequences and town panorama. Horror elements are like cherries on a cake. They do not necessarily scare you, but give you the impression of what is going on in the scene (Raimi likes screaming women that is for sure). Every scene is clear, no overabundance of special effects. You can actually see and understand what is happening.
To begin with we have Peter Parker, a regular schoolboy who is constantly getting bullied. A teenager like me, it is easy to compare yourself with him, that's what Stan Lee wanted, right? Likes a girl, but she doesn't really notice him. Loser. Again, not exactly. Lacks a father figure in his life and sometimes gets harsh on his relatives (the scene where Peter says to uncle Ben not to pretend that he is his father hits different), which leads to some unforeseen consequences. You are not a hero without a great price to pay. He is not Batman or Iron Man. He is Peter Parker, a guy who goes to school everyday. Everyone likes Spider-Man. Very few like Peter Parker.
Norman Osborn, a father of his best friend Harry, part-time Green Goblin. You can see he is more of a father to Peter rather than his own son. A genius work by Dafoe. Scary, bizarre, merciless. Don't tell Harry though.
Mary Jane, a miserable girl who wants to live a life of an actress and date Harry, I mean, Peter... Well, mostly Peter. Yeah, don't tell Harry. She is in need of a superhero to save her life not only from some street hooligans. She is the one who connects two sides of the story well together.
Didn't know how to start, don't know how to end this review. Truly a masterpiece. See it yourself and you won't be dissapointed. 10 out of 10.
Zavod (2018)
Brutal. Cold.
Atmospheric, bleak. I really liked the beginning scene, as a russian citizen I quite felt that. Bykov does a great job at portraying good shots, I believe them. Brings the memories of watching "The prisoners" by Denis Villeneuve. Characters are good, almost everyone has a unique story and something in common - nothing to lose. Well, not exactly. Freezing metal, never ending night rain, sad reality which pursues the workers of the factory. Welcome to zavod, tovarishi.
Some scenes feel incomplete, obscure and break the dynamic. Several action moments are unpredictable and better than today's Hollywood junk. The story itself is good, but not great, at least for me. For non russian viewers it will seem odd, probably. I didn't get what Bykov had to say specifically. Maybe something about people's egoistcal nature, two completely different figures fighting against each other ideologies, but are they really that different? Perhaps not.
