Lives Up to the Premise
9 August 2023
The premise is both simple and intriguing: The French Revolution, but with automats/steampunk robots. This actually works very well, as historically King Louis XVI was very interested in all things mechanical. You play as Aegis, a mysterious automat with the power of speech who at the behest of Queen MarieAntoinette, a virtual prisoner of her husband, sends you to find your inventor to try and put a stop to Louis's evil clockwork army that is wreaking havoc. Along the way you get to meet various historical figures, such as Lavoisier the chemist, Lafayette, Robespierre and Marat. The choices you make with these characters determine the ending. (Since I knew all about Robespierre and Marat from documentaries and my history-loving sister, I purposefully didn't trust those two.) Challenging at times, but also very fun!

The Chosen: Intensity in Tent City (2023)
Season 3, Episode 6

We're getting back to the plot
16 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I love "The Chosen". I even went to go see the first two episodes of season 3 in theaters with my family. Those episodes were amazing-especially the scene with Little James. I know I'm not the only one that part touched.

The other episodes in season 3 have dragged for me, apart from the scenes with Gaius and Simon. But THIS EPISODE has got to be the best of season 3 since the opening ones. An excellent, intriguing beginning, and a lot of plot-important character moments. Also some humor that made me chuckle. Really intriguing that Pontius Pilate and his wife have been introduced; excited to see where that goes.

And you know, we sing about Jesus healing the dumb/mute, but I don't think I've ever actually *seen* it portrayed.

All in all, well done!

Wow

This short film (32 minutes) was bothcharming and mesmerizing, with little details that add a lot to the old familiar story. Also, it had beautifully creative animation that delighted me. I also really enjoyed the same director's "The Frog Princess" (Mikhail Tsekhanovskiy). So far, that, this one and "The Snow Queen" are my favorites from Soyuzmultfilm. I will definitely be continuing my odyssey into Soviet animation.

Soyuzmultfilm was an animation studio based in Moscow, Russia, that released films mostly through the Soviet years of that country, from 1936 and on. Films used hand-drawn, rotoscoping, puppetry and various forms of animation styles.

Applaudable

Warning: Spoilers
A really well-done short film! There's tension, it's unpredictable, and with cinematography that's just beautiful to watch. Truthfully, I would rate it higher if it weren't so violent. It felt like cutscenes from a terrific video game-though live-action of course.

Language: 2 uses of Damn and 1 use of the S-word.

Violence: Lots of splattered blood from various sword wounds. The main character stabs a man in the neck with a knife-a trail of blood then streams out.

Favorite Rom-Com
29 November 2021
I don't usually like romantic comedies. And *Christian* romantic comedies are usually super cheesy with terrible acting.

BUT this is one of my favorite movies! I love the main character Jessie-she's smart, funny, brave and yet normal. The dialogue is sharp and witty, and the film delightfully Christian without being overbearing (a rare trait in this genre.)

An underrated film in my opinion.

Surprisingly Inappropriate
16 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
My first exposure to Horatio Hornblower was, of course, the books. The first of these films I watched was "The Wrong War", which was absolutely enjoyable. So I was really surprised to go back and watch the first movie--the Duel--which I didn't even finish due to its content. While the acting and story are excellent (can't really go wrong with Ioan Gruffudd in a period drama) I was very surprised at how much objectionable content there was; this is coming from a familywoman (is that a word?) Anyway, make your own judgment, I'll simply supply the details.

Objectionable Content:

Sex & Nudity: When Hornblower first gets on the ship, there are plenty of women, and raucous behavior is implied but not shown.Jack asks Hornblower if he is "a fancier of other boys" and if his mother "makes a living on her back." A character calls another character a "whore's son".

Profanity: 1 use of the A-word, 1 use of the H-word, 2 uses of the P-word, and more than 10 instances of the D-word. Blasphemy, such as "Jesu" and "God" are used as exclamations.

Fun and Pretty, But Not Much Else
15 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Slon (Russian for "Elephant") isn't the worst thing I've seen, but nor is it the best either. Along with stunning cinematography and music, the creators of this film couldn't have chosen a better actress for the main character of Boni. She was a delight to watch. And the entire scene where the elephant escaped and was wandering through the farmlands of rural Russia was laugh-out-loud funny. But the story left something to be desired. When Boni is accidentally left behind by her circus troupe, she tags along with the grumpy truck driver who's supposed to deliver the circus elephant. The first half of the movie plods along between Boni being abandoned by him, and then being reunited after a series of mishaps. And the ending left my family and I unsure of what to make of the movie. A beautiful quote at the end-- but what did it have to do with the story? Once again, not the worst but not the best. We mostly watched it for a better understanding of Russian culture.

Objectionable Content:

Sex & Nudity: None, except a man asks Zarezin if Boni is his daughter. When Zarezin replies, "Kind of", the man says "We all have those." It is not clear what is meant by this.

Violence: Zarezin purposefully crashes into some police cars and Boni shrieks.

Profanity: 1 use of the H-word, 1 use of the P-word, one use of the S-word.

Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking: Characters smoke constantly throughout the film. On the bus, the circus performers pull out bottles.

Frightening Scenes: Along with crashing into police cars, there is an intense scene at the end with an automobile accident.
