The Royal Hotel (2023)
Low Reviews = Oblivious Men
The low reviews claiming "this movie was so boring," "nothing happened," "it didn't even make sense," and "it wasn't even a thriller" are from men who expected to be spoon fed an obvious murder mystery thriller.
Rather, the film's suspense lies in the dangers of being a woman in the world, the unease of being the target of the aggressive male gaze, how women have to navigate protecting their safety while placating potentially dangerous men. Additionally, the film played with the idea of trust: can you trust the other women around you to help keep you safe? Can you trust your instincts?
If you watched this and thought it was "stupid," "a waste of time," "pointless," or "senseless," maybe pause and imagine what it is like going through life in someone else's shoes.
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
Clue on drugs dressed up in glow sticks for 2022
Bodies Bodies Bodies is a fun genre bending comedy thriller/ mystery/ slasher/ horror with an amazing cast, fantastic music, and one of my favorite endings of all times. The movie has a lot to say about language and how we (and especially Gen Z) communicate, technology, class, relationships and trust, selfishness, and living online. It's also hilarious. Loved it!
Bees Make Honey (2017)
Couldn't Watch It
Terrible sound quality. We couldn't hear the dialogue at all and had to keep turning it way up to hear what the characters were saying and then turning it way down whenever the music came on.
The move was advertised as a murder mystery comedy, but it was not funny at all? May I suggest Clue, which is hilarious.
Chaos Walking (2021)
HORRIBLE SCENES OF ANIMAL TORTURE AND ABUSE
Do not watch this movie if you are AT ALL sensitive to seeing animas hurt and killed. I wish so badly that I had known I'm advance because I will never get these images out of my head.
The Sinner (2017)
Season 3 is Garbage
Are we supposed to empathize with the insufferable, pathetic, weak, lost white man who is unable to manage his emotions? Jamie spends the whole season running around whining about being a victim of the universe, babbling on about death and loneliness. He is supposed to be deep and intellectual, but comes off as a privileged loser who can't get a grip. Every time he opened his mouth, I died a little inside. He callously murdered three people to make himself feel alive, but then he gets cradled and told "you're not alone" while dying. I can't understand this stupidity.
Every character in this season is ridiculous except Jamie's wife.
Cats (2019)
Fans of the Broadway Musical Will Love It
Fans of the Broadway musical will enjoy the film adaptation of Cats. The film is beautifully choreographed, well cast, and gorgeously set. The writers did a better job of explaining the storyline than the stage production. If you hate musicals or are just watching Cats to hate on it, maybe find something better to do with your time?
