Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Better than I expected it to be
*Very small spoilers, but only discribing topics for people to know of which part of the movie i talk.*
So when I read the first news about the director problems and saw the trailers I really thought this one would be unwatchable bad, but after seeing the movie by myself I wouldn´t say it is that bad. Still not great, but way better than many people told me (often without seeing it).
So the first fear I had, when I saw the first trailer was the humor. The trailer teased us with the typical disney-like formula humor and I really thought this would be to much in this movie. The movie has of course many of these moments where it exactly has this kind of humor, but there are also moments were it is very serious and dramatic without this kind of fun.
*Small Spoiler*
The war scene at the beginning really catched me and I wish rogue one would have had more moments like these. This was one of these more dark and grown up scenes, which i really enjoyed.
Also so fight on the train had those serious vibes.
*Spoiler end.*
Also Solo is technically very well made and good produced. The score differs much more when it comes to the theme of some characters and gives a new fresh feeling. This fresh feeling could kill the Star Wars feeling for some people and this is also what I noticed.
All in all this Star Wars movie doesn´t feel so much like it is one. I think this could be the reason for the bad rating.
The look of the movie reminded me in some cases a little bit of Mad Max. Not that clean like the real star wars look like. More dirty and fading.
I am absolutly okey with that, because I like the way how they try to differ 'a star wars story' from the other movies and I like a more grown up narration, but many people will have a different opinion.
The actors made a good job in my opinion. Of course the mission to establish a second harrison ford is impossible. If you see Alden Ehrenreich´s interpretation of the young solo stand alone, than I think he made a good job, when you think about how impossible his mission was to satisfy all fans. The rest made a good job too, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian was great and was fun to watch.
For Star's lover, the movie may turn out to be 2 stars worse, due to the maybe lost star wars feelings, but even when this is the case we have a really entertaining well made action/adventure movie. So for people which are not that affected by Star Wars and just enjoy the movies like i do it is a 7 out of 10. It will not be the greatest of all time, but it has good moments which give hope for the future.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Thrilling
There are movies that are worth it to remember. A quiet place is definitely one of these movies. The most obvious reason is, that the bold approach to make a movie that does not contain any sound over longer passages. And when i say no sound, i mean absoloutely nothing apart from the sound of the wind. I really appreciated that experience. The consequence of this way of dealing with sound is sensitization of the ears. After an 'hour of silence' every small noise feels like danger and for yourself it becomes much more intense. So I think that this is the goal the filmmaker aimed for and it perfectly worked out for me. The Film score is great and reminds me of titles like 'Gravity', 'Arrivel' or 'Annihilation'. It is not intrusive, except for the scenes where it should be, because of the thrill.
The cinematography is great too. The camera work supports the oppressive feeling perfectly and gives us a good feeling for the lack of prospects due to many close-up attitudes. The Movie is shot on original Film and that gives him a great imperfect look. The Grain in connection with the colours of the movie gives the audience a good picture of the desolation.
The story is very interesting, also because the idea and the setting seem unused. Although the movie offered a lot of opportunities to disturb him by talking, the whole audience was quiet the whole movie. I think that's a good sign for a movie if it manages to grab the audience's attention throughout the whole movie. Of course there are a typical 'If that did not happen' moments in the movie, which may not be 100% traceable, but there are no unbearably stupid characters like in other horror movies. All actions and motives of the characters are consistent and dont feel like they try to challenge a specific event which is necessary for next step of the story. This is supported by the good actor performances.
So for me it was a great evening full of excitement and the best movie i saw 2018 so far (Closely followed by 'A beautiful day').
So for me it´s a 9 out of 10, because of the intense feelings this movie gave me.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
Fantastic but with deductions.
Today I left the cinema with mixed feelings. When I saw the first trailer of this movie I was excited, because I like the urban fantasy setting of the Harry Potter universe. Unfortunately Fantastic Beasts couldn't convince me completely. One big positive factor of the movie is the cast. Eddie Redmayne acts great and incarnate perfectly Newt as a sympathetic protagonist. Also the rest of the cast is suitable and sympathetic. I want to emphasize Dan Fogler who plays his role glorious. The charm of the magic was again very well captured. The self-stirring spoon in the cocoa and the many other small details are very coherent and convey this typical Harry Potter Flair. Also very good is the sound (no I don't mean the music) of this movie. I think this is a big reason to watch this movie in theaters, because the sound mixing is great for the big screen (more for the big Hi Fi equipment). So watch this movie in theaters if you have the possibility, because technically it is solid. Some of the audience I watch with didn't like the CGI effects, but in my opinion it was good. Not great, just good and fitting. The narration in the whole movie was the big con for me. The movie has this inconsequent narration. The main problem is that the film tells the two action strings too parallel, so they won 't fix well. Through this, the film becomes too predictable and loses some of its strength. The beginning scene was misleadingly and out of the context, for people who won't read the book. Here, too much was done according to the typical Hollywood formula. The story is pushed too strongly in one direction and the narrative speed is a bit too leisurely for my taste. The whole film would have done 15 to 20 minutes less well. So I promised myself more and I missed something that makes this movie special. With this strong template in the back and the big cast I would have just expected a more rounded movie which sticks out of the mass. I give Fantastic Beasts 7/10, because it is an entertaining movie, with a strong cast, but the narration issues made it a typical Hollywood movie. Not great, not bad, just good. Watch it but don't expect something mind blowing.
Doctor Strange (2016)
Interesting!
*I am not a native speaker, so i am sorry for mistakes or things like that.* I was very excited about the doctor strange movie. I never read a Marvel Comic so I had no idea what to expect. What I expect was a generic marvel movie with magic instead of "avengers power", I can promise that it is much more than that. The first 5 minutes of the Movie destroyed my prejudices. I was drawn into the world of Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange surprised with a comparatively slow narration. Our Hero doesn't get his skills at the next road corner after 10 Minutes. So we follow him on a interesting journey through the mind of a person that changes completely. The slow beginning of the story is followed by a short middle section, which is my only criticism of the film. The story does not get a "routine" and starts immediately with events which advance the story further. So the learning process is a little bit too quick for my taste. There is no real middle section of the movie. With 115 Minutes the movie is comparatively short compared to movies like Civil War or Batman v Superman and I would have preferred if the film had gone a little longer. So the Story of Doctor Strange is interesting and the setting is unused. The whole movie feels refreshing next to the other "classic" marvel films, a little bit like Deadpool (Really only a very very small bit like "Deadpool"). The visuals of the Movie are stunning. It is absolute amazing to sink into the world of mirror dimensions and things like that. I would advise anyone to watch this movie in the cinema AND in 3D. I think this is the first time since "Avatar" that I would prefer a movie in 3D, but the optical illusions and changing dimensions are absolutely amazing in 3D. The music is good but inconspicuous, nothing centuries long lasting, but good and fitting. Benedict Cumberbatch convinces like the rest of the cast of the film. I haven't read the comics, but for me Tilda Swinton was a great embodiment of her role. I can't understand the debate of here role. The humor is similar to the other Marvel films, apart from Deadpool (this movie was glorious). The last thing I want to speak about is the overlaps with the Movie "Inception" some people talked about in advance. Doctor Strange is not Inception, some people will remember the optics to inception, but Inception and Doctor Strange are like apple and pear. I think it is a matter of attitude. So don't expect something like Inception and you will not be disappointed. So what we have is a real interesting character, stunning visuals and refreshing setting packed in a very good movie. If you are interested in the Marvel universe it is a very good episode. If you never watched a Marvel movie before (if there is a person in the world) it is a perfect beginning to give this sort of movie a chance. I give this Movie 9 out of 10, 8,5 out of 10 if i could.. Thumbs up Marvel I am very excited about the future of your universe. Thanks for reading.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Still in the Shadow of the first Film.
*At first i have to apologize: Sorry for the bad English, I am not a native speaker.*
I am a big fan of the Star Trek Series and when I was young I loved the old series and movies. When in 2009 the first "new" Star Trek movie arrived I was excited about the good cast and the intelligent Plot. The second one doesn't have this tricky intelligent story the first film has, but was also a good movie. The Third one with the sub title "Beyond" is unfortunately more like the second movie, but pro's first and here we go. Star Trek Beyond from director Justin Lin, who is known for Fast and Furious, bring some good action on the big screen. In "loud" moments Lin is in his element. Lin knows how to make some good dynamic action scenes. My personal Highlight is the Enterprise fighting scene with Beastie Boys – Sabotage underlaid. This part of the movie is very entertaining and in these points the movie has his great strength. Also so the Cast is very lovely and with Sofia Boutella as Jaylah there is another coherent likable character. The whole cast perfectly matched and I hope to see all of these guys back in Star Trek 4 (a silent minute for Anton Yelchin, Rest in Piece!). So the action is strong, the cast is strong, whats wrong with the movie? Why it is not a 10/10 for me? So I think the story is the first problem for me. I can't help me, but the whole story is for me more a reason to go beyond different places, then a real continuation of the Star Trek saga. The hole film feels like a episode of the series but in a negative way. There is a bad guy who is bad and good guys who are good. Lin just manages not quite the whole to give it more depth and make the plot more interesting. I don't want to Spoil anybody, but the motivation of the antagonist is not very resourceful in my opinion. We all know why Captain Kirk and his crew do what they do, but there enemy is a little bit "flat". Maybe I don't get it right now or doesn't understand the big point and when I see this movie a second time I will find it, but for now Beyond has the weakest Plot. The second Point is very subjective, but for me the tracking shots were a bit to fast so that the motion blur make some whole scene not pleasant. Maybe the 3D supports this effect, but the many "moving the camera" in a circle about objects and characters were a bit too much. I never become Motion sick in any Movie. I saw the movie "Hardcore Henry" without motion sickness, but in Beyond there were some moments I have to close my eyes. With 48 frames per second I think this problem would be fixed, but with cinematic 24 frames a second it was not perfect in my opinion. Otherwise you become a typical Star Trek movie and it is fun to watch it. I think it is a Cinema Cinema Film, so watch it on the Big screen with good sound. So guys please don't hate me, but in my opinion this is the weakest one of all 3 Movies. Please don't get me wrong. "Beyond" is not a bad movie, but it stands like "into darkness" in the shadow of the brilliant first "new" Star Trek movie. So the "genre-rating" for fans is around 8. For everybody else it is a solid 7 out of 10.
Krampus (2015)
Not as good as i expected, but still entertaining.
*Maybe small Spoilers, but nothing about the plot* When I heard about the film Krampus, I was delighted. The ingredients sounds like an exciting mix. A Christmas setting with a fresh and unspent "villain". A solid cast with Conchata Ferrell (Two and a Half Men) Adam Scott (Mitty) and Toni Collette (Six Senth) and lots of black humor wrapped in a horror movie. Unfortunately, I went with mixed feelings from the cinema and reading my vote you can already see, that the film could not fulfill my expectations completely. Krampus thrives on the unusual idea with the eponymous character, "Krampus", but unfortunately the film did not make it in the first 60 minutes to walk properly. Here one has unfortunately taken too much time to introduce the characters, although they still come along relatively stereotypical and a long introduction would not necessary. Really good is the atmosphere of Krampus, everything looks pretty dark and menacing. The horror scenes are exciting and by the unusual idea is to surprise the one time or another. Very good is the implementation of the various figures to Krampus. Here was very little on CGI, as set much more on traditional animation techniques. This gives the film a great look reminiscent of the films of the 80s, where technology like dolls and co was still normal. A single exception is the gingerbread men which are completely CGI and, unfortunately, less convinced of their quality. Here you realize the relatively small budget of 15 million dollars. Unfortunately, there are also bad points. There's the matter of the genre mix. Here, unfortunately, was too isolated between funny and creepy. So the funny passages easy to act compulsively and can not be so well connected to the atmosphere, as is the case for example in a "Zombieland" or "Shaun of the Dead". Here, the film simply takes too seriously when it does not have to be, although there really Conchata Ferrell is noteworthy that knows how to repeatedly convince with their funny kind. The plot just as the plot twist was good for a horror movie in my opinion, but just at the beginning of the story, as already mentioned above, their lengths. Despite exciting idea simply is not as round. The last point of that bothered me, was the appearance of Krampus. Here is just shown at the beginning of his appearance he is an agile contemporary, but it occurs in favor of his helpers a little too much in the background. So I have to end up giving only 6/10 points although I felt entertained by the movie. For horror movie fans this is strip a very fresh way of entertainment. For everyone else an entertaining movie with weaknesses.
Dark Places (2015)
Less is more but it's still a good drama.
Dark Places is a film that made a very good impression on the paper. Great Acting occupation, unconsumed topic and yet he has not quite lived up to expectations. As always the positive things first. The film is really beautiful set in scene and the light Zoom in / Out's give the film a dynamic touch. Likewise, the near camera operator which repeatedly emphasizes details is very nice to look at. Overall, the camera work is very consistent, this has been very careful to bring the bleak tone and the atmosphere across well. The story of the film is exciting and spans a neat bow to the end. Unfortunately, the script also represents the greatest weakness of the film. So many scenes are advised simply too long and taking tidy pace from the movie where this would not be necessary. So we get repeatedly extended scenes see where characters are introduced, but the comparatively get much screen time, although it really only play a supporting role. Here is just too much time spent to show characters and backgrounds, but the damage the film in its tension. Another problem with the story is the Plottwist. Although this is resourceful through out, but unfortunately too much indicated. Register here to become obvious "information" appear to have nothing to do with the story interspersed and even repeated so that even the last, it provides the resolution. Here, less is more, and it would have been better for the film which otherwise builds a good tension. The subject is fresh and interesting, which also lives the film. Thus, while giving most of the characters in addition to information Price, but what their motivations are generally remains unclear. So the progress made in the film partly look pretty designed. The narrative of the film is supportive through many flashbacks. So the pieces of the main character will also become apparent to us only gradually by more and more flashbacks. Save These flashbacks the film in a way, because, unfortunately, the time-current plot line loses again and again the line. The acting performance of Charlize Theron is excellent, but also the rest of the squad can be proud of. Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road), Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick Ass, equalizer) and Corey Stoll (Ant-Man) are also very believable in their roles. Even the younger actors do a very good, especially Tye Sheridan (Scouts vs. Zombies) plays its role here as mysteriously misunderstood teenager very well and I noticed positively. So for whom we can now recommend "Dark Places". Especially Drama / Crime friends be Crime friends will have their fun with it. For people experiencing this genre not so familiar you can not fully recommend "Dark Places". Too many lengths this film even if there are very tense moments. So "Dark Places" an interesting attempt, but unfortunately no more. 7/10
