Frenchman's Creek (1944)
Why don't they make movies like this anymore?
Why don't they make movies like this anymore? I had never seen this movie before and considering the year it was made it was fairly "spicey". Some great acting, especially Bail Rathbone and with his Dr Watson sidekick in the cast, I expected him to put on his deer stalker hat!
I have to applaud the scenery and photography and of course the costumes. The scene where our heroine sees the Pirate Ship for the first time from the cliff top in all it's glory is breathtaking. Having lived in Devon and Cornwall I can't remember a beautiful day and calm seas at any time like that scene. Of course it wasn't shot in Cornwall at all.
Slow start but it got very exciting from the half way point. And the heroine killing the damnable male villain. That's in vogue now. Super heroine before her time.
If only Errol Flynn had played the Pirate lover I would have given it a 10
Zombie Driftwood (2010)
Bermuda triangle, Grand Cayman, Cruise Ship & Zombies galore
A spoof and sometimes very funny movie. Amazingly it was made for around 100,000 pounds sterling. I have seen much worse for much much, more money. If you like lots of jokes with zombies, although looking pretty awful - they are actually 'nice' people and have rights, then you will like this movie. I know there are going to be some awful reviews as this isn't everyone's cuppa tea. The heavy metal music isn't mine but it fits well.
A cruise ship disappearing in the Bermuda triangle and then reappearing behind The Driftwood Inn in the Cayman Islands - a Caribbean paradise - is a simple plot and all the passengers are turned into zombies does make it interesting!
My only complaint, the zombies doing antics and speaking with the sub-titles was over done. It was extremely funny at first but even a good wine can be too much.
Do go and see it with a open mind and you will enjoy. The bar man is a hoot!
The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960)
Why wasn't Lee given the lead role?
I saw this movie at the cinema when I was a teen. I thought (and still do) that Paul Massie was unconvincing in the title role. It was billed as a horror movie but where was the horror? And what was Hammer thinking? They had Christopher Lee in the movie and although he was very good in the role (very sleazy as Dawn Adams' lover).... why wasn't he given the lead? What a difference this film would have been. One had to wait for Lee to play it in "I, Monster."
Dawn Adams was excellent..... and what a beautiful woman...
Not one of the best Hammer movies but well worth a watch, especially for the snake charmer scene. Erotic.
It is not the usual Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde and it does have some class and is generally well acted.
Jinnah (1998)
Terrible Injustice to an excellent film and an excellent actor
I thoroughly enjoyed Jinnah and it told the truth unlike Ghandi. The film never got the distribution it deserved in the USA nor surprisingly in England. Why is it that Christopher Lee, the most underrated actor of all time, was never nominated for an award for his superb portrayal of Jinnah? Why was it that this excellent film was passed over? I found it compulsive and once I got used to the strange beginning (angel debating whether Jinnah goes to Heaven or Hell)I was hooked. I would have given it 10 but for the silly scene (location in between Heaven and Hell) with Nehru and Ghandi looking at computer screens..... The trial of Mountbatten. however, was very interesting and clever. If you haven't seen this movie you need to and it is now available on DVD in UK and USA.
