Bright (2017)
An Interesting Premise, But A Not So Great Development of It
The main idea of this movie was really great. Is like mixing the universe of the Lord of the Rings with a buddy-cop movie.
The presentation of this world and all of it's rules, characters and locations was great and really interesting. But the plot later goes to a more simple continuation that, while it's still good, it's not as great as it could have been. Basically is the story of how the two main characters try to work and cooperate with each other to find a mystical weapon that could destroy the world where they are living. The two main characters are played by Will Smith, as the human cop who was alright, and Joel Edgerton as the half-orc Jackoby, who I think was the most interesting character of the movie, as well as the most developed. The evil girl called Leilah was played by Noomi Rapace who was okay, but nothing too special.
The visuals were really great for this kind of movie and also I have to mention the make-up team for their great work. Also, there were some great songs during the movie and a really good score by David Sardy.
It's a fun an entertaining movie that I would recommend to anyone who wants to be entertained for about two hours. And also, don't listen to critics. It's not as awful as they make it seem.
Firestarter (1984)
Good Movie Adaption from a Stephen King Book with Drew Barrymore
Stephen King might one of the most well known writers nowadays, and he usually has some kind of obsession with paranormal events, in this case affecting a young little girl and his father, who are trying to run away from some evil government forces that want to capture them to do experiments.
The story is great, the two main characters are well written and are easy to connect with. And during the first half of the movie it flowed well and all. But around the half of the movie, it stops and gets slower and somehow, more boring. It still keeps the interest during some tense moments but it goes down a lot from the great start. Drew Barrymore as the little girl, Charlie was fantastic and her performance really makes you care about what could happen to her or her dad, Andy, played by David Keith.
The visual effects, although they weren't perfect, were great for the not-so-high budget this movie had. The scenes with the young Drew Barrymore using her telekinetic powers were great and interesting to watch. And the atmosphere is created in part thanks to the great electronic score by Tangerine Dream.
I would recommend this movie to any Stephen King, as I'm sure they would enjoy it a lot.
Black Mirror: San Junipero (2016)
Beautiful, Emotional. One Of This Series Bests
I usually not write reviews for single chapters in TV shows, but after watching this one, I felt the need to. And it's because it is a closed story. It's not like in many other TV shows where you have a developing story though many chapters. Black Mirror is an anthology series that treats the themes of humanity related to the progress of science.
But this episode was really beautiful. It tells us the story of two girls who meet in a city called San Junipero. From that moment they start to develop a really deep bond that will make them question some things. The story is beautiful. It is a love story between two girls (and we don't get to see that much in TV or movies). And I'm not saying it's great because they're two girls. I'm saying it because it is really beautiful that it made me cry at the end.
The two girls in the leading roles were perfect. Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Kelly was awesome, portraying a funny, opened character that was a really good opposite to Mackenzie Davis' character, Yorkie, who is more shy and quiet. They both have such a great chemistry that I could watch an entire series with just the two of them. They're mainly the only characters, apart from some secondary ones that aren't of too much importance. But they carry the emotional weight of the episode alone and that's one of the best things of it.
The cinematography was really great, recreating the 80's ambient better than most of the films with big budgets that are pretending the same. This is also thanks to the soundtrack. The song choices are perfect and they make a lot of sense within the story. And the score composed by Clint Mansell is really beautiful in an old fashioned way.
I would recommend this particular episode to everyone who loves to watch a movie with a great love story, lovely characters, great performances, beautiful cinematography and a great soundtrack. This is one of the finest TV pieces I have ever watched!
Coco (2017)
Pixar Is Back! Beautiful, Stunning and Emotional
It can't be denied that Pixar is one of the best studios of animation. Most of their movies have become classics and we all love their characters (Monster Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Up, etc.) But since 2010 the only great Pixar movie had been Inside Out, the rest of them being boring or unnecessary sequels that weren't so great. But with this movie Pixar is back at its best form.
This movie tells us the story of a young kid who wants to be a musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz, but his family does not let him play music, so he starts a journey across the Land of the Dead in the Day of the Dead festivity to try to follow his dreams. Well, my only issue with this movie is that the basic idea of the story is not that original. I mean, a kid wants to do something, but his family won't let him, so he has to do something about it to finally reach his dreams. But the way the story is told to us is the thing that will make you forget this. It's a really beautiful story about the family, the love and the music, all with the background of the Mexican culture. About this, I have to say that Pixar exceeded my expectations. They really did a great research of every little detail of the Mexican culture and they put it into the movie with such a love and care that just for seeing all of those little details you would want to watch it a second time (in the credits you can see all the name of the families that helped in this research and that shows the interest Pixar put into it).
The cast (well, voice cast was really great). From the young Anthony Gonzalez (as Miguel) to Benjamin Bratt (as Ernesto de la Cruz) or Gael Garcia Bernal (as Hector) they are all perfect in their roles and they give a special feeling to their characters that was really great and added a lot to the story. It's usual in good Pixar movies that it has really lovely characters and this is no exception. It has some really wonderfully crafted characters that you fall in love with even in a less than two hour film.
The visuals of this movie are amazing (what you expect?). All the recreation of the Mexican culture is fantastic, with really colorful landscapes, and with a lot of little details full of meaning. Some shots even looked like they were real images with animated characters in it. The music is fantastic as well. There are some really beautiful songs. I especially love the song Remember Me (Recuérdame) that appears in many different versions throughout the movie and it is really emotional. And also a special mention to the Pixar composer by excellence, Michael Giacchino (who even has a brief cameo in the movie as orchestra leader) who as usually gives the movie a lot more emotion with his beautiful melodies, bu also recreates the musical soundscape of Mexico with really funny musical tracks with guitars, trumpets and so on.
I would recommend this movie to everyone. I mean, it's a movie that will touch you for sure (I cried for the final 10 minutes of the movie). It's really beautiful, with lovely characters, stunning visuals and really emotional music. What else would you want? It's Pixar at its best. I think you don't need more, so go watch it right now!
Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017)
Totally Unnecessary
Coco was a really great movie. I loved it, except for the fact that I had to wait for almost half an hour to watch it because of this awful long short movie. It was stupid, unnecessary and make me really impatient, because I went to the movie theatre to watch Coco, not another stupid Frozen short. If you go watching Coco at cinemas, you can enter the movie twenty minutes later and you won't miss anything.
Why Disney, why?
Stand by Me (1986)
The Beauty Of Childhood and Innocence
This movie is really beautiful and is really a timeless masterpiece. Stephen King is known for having really interesting and developed characters in his novels and I think this is one of the best adaptations of one of his book that has ever been made.
It basically tells us the story of a group of four kids that start a journey looking for a dead body of a kid that is somewhere around the woods. But this is just the surface of the story. In fact is a story about the childhood, the friends and the innocence. Is a story that we can relate to easily, because we all have been childs at some moment and we had very good time back then, just playing with our friends, with no bigger worries than what kind of animal is Goofy, or what food would you choose if you could just pick one in the world.
The four kids are so great and the actors were perfect in the roles, like you really feel their friendship, their connection, their support to each other, but also you can see yourself grinning from the jokes they make, because they take you back to those moments with your friends in the past. Corey Feldman and Jerry O'Conell are really great in the movie and they provide most of the comic moments. But the true starts in here are Wil Wheaton and specially river Phoenix. They both have some very emotional scenes with each other that brought a tear to my eye more than I expected.
This movie has one of the most iconic shots in film history. The kids walking down the train tracks just singing a song with no worries at all. Some of the shots were stunning and really beautiful to look at and the movie has a really great soundtrack full of great hits from that time.
This is a movie that I think everybody could enjoy. I think this is in a more personal way but this movie touched me and made feel a bit sad and nostalgic about those lost moments in the past, but also made me happy because I was lucky to live that and to have really great friends. And I think I have never had any friends like the ones I had when I was twelve. But Jesus, who does?
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Kenneth Branagh Brings Back The Mystery To The Orient Express
Well, I have to say that I haven't watched the original movie, nor read the book, so I cannot tell if this is a good adaptation or which of the the two is better. Branagh is well know for adapting English literature classics into movies and I think he is really great at that.
The movie tells us the story of Hercules Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) who has to find out who is the murder that has killed a person inside the Orient Express. The story keeps you interested, its full of tension, suspense and even drama, and it surprises you at the end in a way I couldn't see coming (I won't spoil it).
The cast is what you could call a Dream Team of the Actuation. You have Kenneth Branagh, Michelle Pfeiffer, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Daisy Ridley, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, etc. All of them are great in their roles. They all have a little part in the story, but they all have little moments to shine (well, apart from Branagh that takes the main role).
As a director, Branagh gives us some really interesting shots that are really beautiful to look at, even they were created in a studio. He creates longs shots where he likes to show is big ensemble cast by long panoramic of the train windows or inside the train. He is a usual collaborator with composer Patrick Doyle, who here creates a really beautiful score for the moments where it's needed, but also creates some really tense tracks that help build the tension a lot.
I would recommend you this mainly because it does not happen that much that we have a cast as wonderful as this all together in the same screen and also because it's a really interesting and entertaining movie, a little bit different of all of the modern action blockbusters were are getting again and again.
Justice League (2017)
Chaotic But Entertaining Mess
Justice League is the expected reunion of some of DC's most loved characters, but its post-production has been really chaotic and messy, and that is reflected in the movie. Zack Snyder had to left the movie because of a familiar tragedy and that brought Joss Whedon on board, who did a great amount of the shots, changed the tone of the movie overall and did other changes. The final movie is far away of what I would loved it to be, but to watch all of those heroes together on screen is just wonderful.
This movies tells us the story of how Bruce Wayne is trying to reunite a team for fighting against the forces of evil that are menacing the Earth. I like the way the story is told and I really like the idea of Bruce reuniting the League. My main problem is that the movie does not have time to set up really well all the secondary characters (Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg, not to mention the villain, Steppenwolf). The movie is so rushed that they are just introduced, given a bit of backstory, and that's it. I think this movie should have been longer just for given those characters and interesting background that would have make them more likable.
Anyway, the actors are really great in their roles. Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman keep their awesome job from Batman V Superman and keep showing us that their casting was really spot on. I really liked Henry Cavill as Superman in the previous movies, but in this, I don't know, I just feel it's character was underused and he could have bring an interesting dynamic to the group if used more. Flash was played by Ezra Miller, Aquaman by Jason Momoa and Cyborg by Ray Fisher. They did really great. Their characters at times felt a bit like background characters more than members of the League, but that's not problem of the actors. And then you have the villain, who was the most dull and stupid villain we have had in the DCEU so long. He just appeared at some parts and then disappeared and he had from little to zero background story for us to really understand what were his main purposes.
The visuals were amazing as always, and at some shots you could really feel Zack Snyder's present, who might not be a great storyteller, but is a genius at creating powerful images. Although at some parts of the movie you felt Whedon (or maybe Warner) presence in the lighter tone (that was the difference DC had over Marvel) and the unnecessary jokes put all over the place. And my other problem is the music. At first Junkie XL was hired to compose the score but when Whedon came in, he was replaced by Danny Elfman. Elfman has a really great talent, but he decided to move away from the soundscape Hans Zimmer had created in the previous movies to provide a boring, flat and unmemorable score that is barely audible within the movie. Elfman is a really great composer but I was sadly disappointed with his work in here and I wish he had kept Zimmer themes from Man of Steel and Batman V Superman.
Overall, this is an entertaining movie, but not a perfect one. If you liked Man of Steel and Batman V Superman, this might be a step down for you (like it was for me), but if you're a Marvel fan, I'm sure you will enjoy this one really much.
Stranger Things (2016)
The Very Best Of The 80's In One Amazing Show
This show has the very best of everything you loved from the 80's decade. Not just the movies but also the music, the literature, the games, etc.
It has a lot of subplots and details, but the main story in the first season is the mysterious and strange vanishing of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and the struggle of his mother and friends on finding him, while a mysterious girl appears around the town, and the kids start thinking that these things may be related. The story has some of the best elements of the 80's horror, adventure and sci-fi films. You can find a bit of Alien, a bit of ET or The Goonies,a bit of of The Thing or Halloween, etc. For some this may be unoriginal and boring but for me it's a great throwback to all the great things that were created in the 80's.
The cast is just perfect. Right now, I couldn't think of another actor/actress playing the role. The main four kids are Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Will (Noah Schnapp), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Lucas (Caleb MacLaughlin). They are really great and seeing their chemistry together on screen is one of the highlights of the show. Then there is this little girl, Eleven played wonderfully by Millie Bobby Brown. She gives one of the most powerful performances of the whole show and every time she appears on screen you can see how much talent this girl has. Then you have the more grown ups, from the adults, Chief Hopper (David Harbor) and Joyce (Winna Ryder)) who play their role perfectly, to the teens, Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heathon) and Steve (Joe Keery). All the actors were really great in the show and the ones that appear in the second season are also really great but I won't say anything about them in order to not spoil it.
The recreation of the 80's era is one of the best things of the show. You could watch the show again just to find those little details hidden in each scene, with maybe a poster from The Evil Dead or Jaws, or maybe a toy of ET or Yoda. The cinematography and the visuals also take you back to many of those classics from the 80's that you fell in love to when you watched it, and it will bring so many good memories about them. It also recreates the feeling of the kids going around with their bikes, going to the arcade, playing D&D, etc. The soundtracks is another good thing in the show. It has a fantastic collection of music, from The Clash or Scorpions to Tangerine Dream or vangelis. And also the fantastic electronic score created by two members of the electronic band S U R V I V E (Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein) who are able to recreate the sound of the 80's synths perfectly and juts from the opening theme you're introduced into this fantastic world.
Definitely a must watch if you love a really great story with lovely characters, great visuals and a great soundtrack, all mixed in a big pack of 80's nostalgia.
The Goonies (1985)
A Fanstastic, Funny And Entertaining Classic
The Goonies is one of those classics that you could re watch lots of times and you would still enjoy it as much as the first time.
It tells the story of a group of kids who found a map with an X in it, so they decided to go across their town to look for the pirate treasure they think it's hiding somewhere near them, but they have to escape from the Fartelli Brothers who also want that treasure for themselves. The story is fantastic and is like a teen Indiana Jones adventure movie.
The cast is perfect. From Sean Astin's Mikey to Josh Brolin's Brand, all the kids are fantastic in the movie, and they really act like kids, screaming one over the other, insulting each other, doing stupid things and that's a really great thing.
The action and the adventure moments of the movie are fantastic. It's just pure fun and entertainment and it sure has some of the best moments of this kind of movies (I specially like the part in the ship and the parts where they're trying to avoid the "booty traps"). The score by David Gruisin does no other thing than increase the fun and adventure of the movie.
I would recommend you this movie if you're an adventure-action lover, specially if the movie is set in the 80's.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Entertaining At Times But Excessively Comical
Marvel discovered a formula for their films that worked well. And now they are starts to copy all of their movies, so they look all like the same one.
The story is about Hella, the sister of Thor, being released after being captive for a long time, so she decides to invade and destroy Asgard. Thor is trying to stop the Ragnarok, a massive power that could destruct an entire planet. This is basically the story, and while it's great, I just couldn't help but feel like it was a joke. It's the end of the world but let's just make jokes about everything and make this movie full with little jokes from the very first minute to the very end of the credits.
If all the jokes were funny, this would have been a really great comedy about Thor, but the problem is that for me, most of them were just not funny and unnecessary.
The cast was okay. Chris Hemsworth fits really well in this character and he provided the needed performance, as well as Mark Ruffalo as Hulk. Tessa Thompson was also okay and had some bad ass moments but she didn't get to do that much at any moment. My main problem is with Tom Hiddleston and Cate Blanchett. They look like they needed more screen time and less jokes to make their characters really shine, but they were just secondary (and I would say that even background) characters.
Not everything is complain. I mean, this movie really entertains you at many moments and some action sequences at Planet Sakaar were really awesome. This are the parts I wish were longer. Where they have just superheroes in action, pure fun and entertainment. The visuals were impressive at some moments, even if at times felt a little too much of CGI. Also, the score is great, mixing orchestral music with the fantastic synthesizers of the 80's, but the bad thing is that at most parts this score is just covered by a lot of background noises that don't let the score shine properly at some parts where it should have.
Overall, this is an entertaining movie, but for watching it once, because in the following viewings I think this will end up being just repetitive.
I would recommend you this if you're a die hard Marvel fan, because you will get what you're looking for.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
A Timeless Masterpiece By A Timeless Genius
Steven Spileberg has show that he is one of the best filmmakers around, and I think this movie shows the best of his abilities.
It tells us the story of the relationship between ET, and extraterrestrial who was left on Earth by accident, and Elliot and his family, who find him in their garden and try to keep him safe. The story is fantastic, really well told and I think it transmits you a lot of emotions. It makes you laugh and cry just in side by side scenes and that's a really impressive thing.
The actors were amazing. Here the trues stars are the children. Henry Thomas as Elliot was amazing. He gave a really powerful performance and was the highlight of the cast. But also Drew Barrymore as Gertie is fantastic. She steals every scene where she appears and she is really cute and funny. The adults here does not have a really big role, but mainly the mother of these kids, played by Dee Wallace, has a great part too.
Spileberg's direction in this movie has provided some of the most iconic shots in film history (just that bike flying over the moon is a true perfect shot). Those visuals are fantastic and that is in a big part, because of John Williams. That man reached one of his master jobs in here. The score is perfect to the movie and just listening to the fantastic Adventures on Earth you will get goosebumps.
This movie is really one of those classics that you will watch more than one time with your family, and each time you watch again, you will still enjoy it as much as the first time. This movie is one of the main reasons I love movies so much. They make you feel and travel to another time or space and they capture your attention for two hours, making you forget all your problems and just enjoying it
Sicario (2015)
A Really Well Crafted Thriller, With One of the Most Interesting Directors
Denis Villenueve is slowly becoming one of my favorite directors nowadays. He usually creates great movies, with great atmospheres, with gorgeous visuals and a fantastic cast. This are his main trademarks.
Sicario is about a group of agents and police men of the USA government who are trying to stop the horrible things that are happening because of the drug cartel in the frontier between USA and Mexico. The story is not that original, I think, but what is great about this movie is that it takes a simple story and tells us that story in an original and fascinating way. I was staring at the screen for a really big part of the movie, watching the amazing cinematography, the tense moments and the fantastic cast.
The main character is Kate and FBI agent played wonderfully by Emily Blunt. She is the character who introduces us to the story, and with her facial expressions she is able to transport us to the dark and gritty world of the drug traffic. But she is not the only one who delivers. Josh Brolin also creates a really good character, charismatic but also enigmatic, but the true star of the show is, without a doubt, Benicio del Toro. He is the most enigmatic character, the one that says the least, and the one that you really want to know more about. He is fantastic in the role and I think he won a really deserved Oscar in the supporting role category.
The problem (not big, but still a problem) I have with this movie, and that's why not the 10 stars rating, is the role of the friend of Kate, that I don't really feel he adds anything to the story, more than some moments of friendship between them. And also, there were some moments around the middle of the movie, that I felt a bit slow, and almost unnecessary, but maybe it's a bit of nitpicking on my side.
Apart from that the movie really keeps you on the edge, but with no need of explosions or car chases. Just with the visuals, you are stuck. That is because of the amazing directing by Villenueve, that keeps you in tension in each scene, with the help of the wonderful Roger Deakins, who is able to keep all the shots interesting and beautiful, transmitting you the tension even in a just talking scene. Also, I need to mention the hypnotic score by Johan Johannsson, who add a lot to the building tension of the movie.
Definitely a must see to the cinema lovers, to the lovers of Villenueve, and to everyone who wants a good story told in an amazing and fascinating way.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Captivating, Stunning, and Emotional. A Modern Masterpiece
Just wonderful, what Denis Villeneuve did with this movie is fantastic. He did a sequel of the science fiction masterpiece that is Blade Runner, and he did it well. Not only well, but on the same level of the original, without a doubt.
This movie tells the story of K, a Blade Runner of Los Angeles that discovers a secret that could bring the whole world to war. This is not a very good summary, but it's better you watch it without knowing too much about the story. Well, the first movie treated themes like what makes us human, our own identity and the ethics of robotics and so. This movie goes even further with this topics and develops them more, introducing many questions about the meaning of the characters and all this things, and it leaves you thinking a lot about it.
Ryan Gosling is the main character K, and he is fantastic. I still have to watch a movie where he is not good at. He carried a big part of the movie, and you really connect with his character and his motivations. Then there is Harrison Ford, who reprises his role of Rick Deckard from the first movie, and even if he does not have many screen time, when he appears on screen, he owns the scene. Ana de Armas plays Joi, a mysterious character that I won't spoil anything about, but she has a really powerful performance. Sylvia Hoeks also has an important role in the movie and she is really badass and brings a great performance as the assistant of Wallace played by Leto. And now about Leto, he has a small role in the movie, even if he is in all the trailers, but he is really great. There are also some minor roles payed by some great actors like Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Dave Bautista and even Edward James Olmos. They all don't have a really big role, but they add a lot to their characters and their scenes.
Now, let me talk about the visuals. WOW! Roger Deakins deserves the Oscar just right now, because the visuals of this movie are really amazing. Not just Los Angeles city, but all the environments, the deserts, all of it it's just a beautifully crafted shot. This with the magnificent directional work of the great Villeneuve, creates a fantastic landscape that will captivate you for more than two hours and a half and will keep you staring at the screen with your eyes open looking at this stunning movie. Also I have to mention the also captivating and powerful score that Benjamin Wallfisch created with the help of Hans Zimmer. The soundtrack is really near the same level of the one Vangelis created for the first movie and together with the stunning imagery, the powerful performances and the captivating story, you have a really great piece of cinema art, that will come down as one of those classics of the science fiction..
I would recommend this movie to everyone in general, but specially to the fans of the original, the fans of this director or the fans of science fiction, because this is truly a great achievement in the genre of the science fiction and in movies in general. Do not miss this one!
Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Wes Anderson takes us to our teenage times with fun and melancholy at the same time
Wes Anderson is one of the directors that takes care of the visuals of his movies at the best. And he also is one of the directors that can make us laugh and cry in the same movie but in a very good way, not like those sappy comedy movies.
In this movie he tells us the story of two young lovers who decided to escape, one from her house and the other from his scout camp, to start a journey through the island where they live so they can be together. The story is great in the sense that is very well told to us, with a narrator that introduces us to the place and time the story is set. And with that the story starts. It has the unique style of Wes Anderson and if you like that you will surely love this movie. It has subtle humour introduced through the whole movie, it has romantic moments, it has funny moments, and it has melancholic moments, but never feels dull or boring, at least for me.
The cast is formed by some well-known actors like Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray or Tilda Swinton, and all of them in their small roles they do a great job, but the stars that really shine in this movie are the two unknown actors in the main roles of Suzy (Kara Hayward) and Sam (Jared Gilman). They have a great chemistry between them and they carry the movie on their own with no problem, making you connect with them very easy.
As usual in Anderson movies, the visuals are stunning and beautiful, with every shot full of little details and calculated at the minimum part. So you could watch this movie twice, one for discovering the story and so, and the other to discover all the small details hidden in every shot of the movie. And if to those visuals you add the soundtrack, that mixes classical Wes Anderson songs with the score of Alexandre Desplat, who always manages to capture the essence of Anderson's films, you have a truly great film about a summer romance that will take you to younger times.
I highly recommend this movie to every Wes Anderson fan, but also to everyone who wants to go back to his childhood and his teenage times with nothing to worry about. Highly enjoyable movie full of great stories, great actors, great visuals, great music and full of emotions.
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
The Movie Title and the Trailers Were Wrong. Anyway, An Epic Finale to This Amazing Trilogy.
So, about the title and the trailers, I think many people went to this movie expecting WAR. I know, that's what the trailers sold us and I understand that maybe this has make many people disappointed. But this movie is by far better than just monkeys versus humans, and explosions and so. It also has that but is more dark and complex than that.
It tells us the story of how, after two years from the previous movie, the apes are fighting the human army, trying to survive. Then when they're about to travel to a new land where they could live in peace, Caesar knows about the Colonel and he starts seeking for revenge for something he has done to him. The story is very dark and at times it has a complex feeling. It's not mindless action. It's about how an ape and his companion try to save his race over the human one. He has to make sacrifices and he has to face the horrors of war.
The cast is amazing. And for that we have to talk about Andy Serkis and the Motion Capture. I really think that he deserves an Oscar. Since Gollum in Lord of the Rings he has created a lot of other characters with the motion capture technique: Gollum, King Kong, Captain Haddock, Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars and Caesar in this amazing trilogy. He gives a very powerful performance as the ape leader and the CGI is amazing because now it allows to transmit the exact faces expressions of Andy Serkis, as well as the other actors, into the apes. In the human side we have Woody Harrelson as the Colonel. He has a lot of charisma and he, with Caesar, provides very powerful moments, where you only have acting, music and tension, no dialogue and that makes it even more powerful. Also you have that little girl, Nova (Amiah Miller) who also was great and despite she could not talk, she gave a very good performance along with the apes. If I had to remark some bad things of the movie, it would probably be the introduction of the Bad Ape, a new character introduced as a comic relief that at times I felt it was out of place. The other thing that didn't really convinced me, was how the problem with the human army was solved. I won't spoil anything but I felt it was a bit stupid, but the rest of the movie is so good that for me it didn't ruined it a lot.
Well, I have already mentioned it. The visuals are amazing, not only the apes created with the CGI but also the landscapes and the cinematography were beautiful and provided some very powerful moments as I have said above this. Also a very special mention to Michael Giacchino who created one of his best scores ever. He develops some of his themes from Dawn and creates new ones, giving the movie an epic feeling, but also very emotional and at times dark.
As I have said, this is one of the finest blockbusters of the year, along with Baby Driver and Dunkirk and this is how this kind of movies should be like. With action, very entertaining but also with a good story, great characters, and with a heart. Also this is a very good end to this great trilogy that is now among the best trilogies of the cinema for me. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the previous ones or just wants to watch a blockbuster made with head and heart. The only thing I have to say is: Please, sell the movie for what it is, not for what you want us to believe it is.
Colossal (2016)
A Colossal Anne Hathaway Carries Much Part of This Movie About Monsters, Alcohol and Consequences.
Well, this is my first movie of Nacho Vigalondo and I must admit that I really didn't know what to expect from it, because I had read that it was a movie about Anne Hathaway being drunk, and a monster somehow related with her and it all had to do with the consequences of our actions in life.
Well this might be confusing but it tells us the story of Gloria (Anne Hathaway) a girl who drinks a lot and who is forced to leave her home in New York, where she live with his boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens), and she tries to start over in the village where she grew up and where she has a childhood friend, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). She slowly comes to the realization that a monster that has appeared in Seoul is somehow connected with her. The story is original at the least and it's very well introduced to us with the use of the news images and YouTube videos to connect the monster to Hathaway's character. But don't watch expecting something like Cloverfield with a monster destroying a city and so. It tells us the story of how Gloria reacts to this connection and what she does to manage that situation. The thing that really didn't worked for me was the explanation of this connection, that I won't spoil, and some aspects of the end of the movie, and that leaves you a bit confused at the end, but the movie overall is great.
Anne Hathaway is fantastic in the role of Gloria and he carries the movie through its whole duration. She has a feeling of sadness and innocence at the same time that help you connect with her character very fast. Also Jason Sudeikis is great as the childhood friend of Gloria, Oscar. I won't spoil anything but his character gets more and more interesting as the movie goes on. The other actors don't do a lot, because they're secondary characters and they don't play a big part in the movie.
The visuals of the monster and then of the robot are great and surprised me, because of the fact that is not a big budget movie, but they managed to create a frightening monster with not much money. Also the soundtrack is a mix of great songs with the score created by Bear McCreary that captures perfectly the feeling of darkness and mystery through some parts of the movie.
I would highly recommend you the movie if you like to be surprised with almost unknown movies, and I suppose that also to the Nacho Vigalondo fans, because I think this movie has a similar feeling to his other movies. Also, watch it knowing the less you can, and you will enjoy it more.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
A Reinterpretation of the Myth of King Arthur by Guy Ritchie
Well, Guy Ritchie has a peculiar style, that cannot be denied, and sometimes that style fits the story he takes very well. For example, he did something similar in Sherlock Holmes and I really liked those movies. But in here I felt that at parts it worked really great, but in other parts it was a bit too much and it didn't worked for me.
It tells us the story of how Arthur realizes he is somehow connected to the sword he takes out from the stone and how he realizes he must do something with the evil king that is trying to take him out of his way in his search for the power. The story, with a different treatment, would have been very good, because this is a story that has not been told too much on movies and would have been good to have different stories about Arthur. But at sometimes it felt like it was a parody of itself, but also at other times it feels like a big fantasy epic like Lord of the Rings, and that is what ruins the movie at parts, because it's trying to mix two different things that really don't fit. Ritchie is used to make something like montages or tell us a story in flashback and forward, like in the scene with the Vikings tale or when he goes to the Darklands, and that worked at parts, but at others felt a bit out of place, but anyway, that were some of my favourite moments of the film.
The actors were mainly well-known actors who were just having fun with this movie and nothing more. For example, Jude Law as the Evil King Vortigen is just enjoying his role of the evil one and nothing more. Charlie Hunnam was great as the King Arthur and he has that bit of charisma that makes you connect easier with his character, but even so, the character reminded me a lot to the Sherlock Holmes one in the movies by Ritchie. The thing that happens here is that there are a lot of great actors wasted on unnecessary and useless secondary characters, like Djimon Honsou, Aidan Gillen or Eric Bana.
The visuals were at the same time amazing and chaotic. At parts it really feels like something similar to the Lord of the Rings (well, saving the big differences), and it has a video game feel to it that reminded me a lot to 300. But at parts this visuals just go off the rails and it becomes a chaotic mess where you don't know what is exactly going on. To these both amazing and chaotic visuals you have to add the soundtrack, as amazing and chaotic at times as the visuals. It mixes epic heroic tracks with "breathing" tracks that are a bit too much, but it just fits the movie. The soundtrack by Daniel Pemberton captures both feelings of amazing and chaotic, but I really liked the soundtrack in comparison to the movie.
I don't know if I would recommend this to anyone. Maybe video game fans will love the aesthetic of the movie, maybe Ritchie fans will like his special way of storytelling, and maybe you're just watching the movie for entertainment, and you will surely will have that, because that is what this movie is for, to entertain us and not much more.
Dunkirk (2017)
Christopher Nolan Does It Again with His Shorter and More Tense Movie to Date
First of all, I have to say that I have watched all the movies of Nolan, and while he might be too cool-minded and calculator at times, he really knows how to make a movie and how to get you to feel what he want you to feel. For me the best movies of him are The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and also Interstellar was very good, but I have to say that this enters in my Nolan top 5 without doubt.
The movie tells us the story of how the British army tried to rescue the soldiers trapped in the beach of Dunkirk. It tells us the story in three different time lines. First, there is the mole (one week), then the sea (one day), and finally, the air (one hour). The story goes back and forth in the three different time lines and tells us the story from the perspective of different characters. But the thing that differentiates this movie from other war movies is that it does not have a n emotional weight in the sense that it not stares at just one soldier and tell us his story, how he got to the war, or why he wants to escape from there.
And for that you might think that if it does not have emotional feeling it might be boring, but it is never boring. It transmits you the feelings of a real war. Fear, tension, panic
That is helped a lot by the great actors in this movie. Here there is a really big cast, from veteran actors like Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy
to the newer actors that for me were the biggest surprise of the movie. From Fionn Whitehead to Harry Styles the all provide great performances that help you connect with them and the situation they are.
And now I have to talk about the visuals. Nolan likes to make his movies' looking the more realistic that is possible, so he decided to use real ships and planes from the IIWW. And also he decided to record the movie in 70mm and that provides an immersive cinematic experience that provides some very beautiful shots with the planes flying over the sea, but also some very claustrophobic moments while the soldiers are being attacked. And to this you have to add the always effective soundtrack of Hans Zimmer who created a one long track using mainly sound designs and that only helps to make you feel more far and tension.
This movie is truly one of Nolan's bests so if you like his style of filmmaking, I'm sure you will like this one. And this is not only for Nolan fans, but also for cinema fans who wants to watch a movie and be immersed in a real cinematic experience.
Baby Driver (2017)
One of the Best Blockbusters of the Year
I think this is what the people should think when they talk about a summer blockbuster. An entertaining movie but also a good movie, not just some CGI creatures destroying a random city and nothing more. This movie offers a very good entertainment and a very good story and for me it will probably be one of the best blockbusters of the year, along with Dunkirk and the third planet of the apes movie.
It tells us the story of Baby (Ansel Elgort), a boy who suffered an accident when he was young and because of that he is always listening to music that helps him relax and so. He is the driver of Doc (Kevin Spacey) who gets him to drive some bank robberies. Well, maybe it's not very well explained but I'm sure it's worth the watch. The story it's not just car chases and bank robberies. It also has time for developing the human side of the characters, at least of some of them, because the other are merciless and cruel. It reminded me to the movie Drive starring Ryan Gosling in the sense that the main character is a driver who does not speak much and the things he does are trying to do the right thing.
The cast was wonderful. Ansel Elgort as the main character, Baby, was perfect. He has this shy even emotionless face in some parts but he also has the human side in his relationship with the old man, Joseph, and with Debora, Lily James. She was also very good in the role as the love interest of Baby. The love story, I thought would be just an excuse to get more people to the cinema but it's very well introduced and developed. They have a great chemistry and at many times you really feel the same they feel. The secondary characters were also great, from Jaime Foxx as Bats, to Kevin Spacey as Doc, they all have little moments to shine, to make you hate them or love them.
And now I have to talk about the visuals. This is one of the best things of this movie. How the action sequences were filmed. Edgar Wright was able to give this movie the feeling he wanted. To make you feel tense, in danger, until the very end of the movie. There are many car chases and a chase running by the street and they all are filmed amazingly. And with this you have the soundtrack. Steven Price has a small score but here the important things are the songs. It's not a cheap excuse to introduce the songs. You have Baby's backstory as an explanation and the songs are just like another character in the movie. I have to mention not only Edgar Wright but also the music and film editors who managed to synchronize the music with the action sequences, with the gunshots, with the car chases, and gave a special feeling to the film.
I totally recommend you this if you like heist movies, action movies, thriller movies, and even musical movies, because this is some kind of action-thriller musical movie that should be the kind of movies that we should have every summer, not just Transformers or Fast & Furious movies. Just watch it and see it for yourself but I'm sure you will probably enjoy it as well as I did.
Sin City (2005)
Sin City: Stylish, Sexy & Violent
This is what we could call an accurate adaptation of a comic book into a movie. This is what it could be the best adaptation of something like this. It has many of the images similar to the comic ones and that's something very good.
It tells the story of three different men who have to deal with the criminal problems that are around Basin City. This might not be very well summed up, but it's better to watch it by yourself. The three main stories are interconnected with each other in a very good way, with some characters appearing in other stories, or with the mention of certain places or actions. Although there were some parts I felt like I was missing something in the story, but I could not tell what exactly was missing.
One of the best parts of the movie is the whole cast, and despite being a lot of great actors, they all have time to shine, even if it's a few minutes. From Bruce Willis, Michael Rourke, Clive Owen, Benicio del Toro or Elijah Wood, to Jessica Alba, Carla Gugino, Rosario Dawson, Alexis Bledel or Jaime King. I specially loved the characters of Michael Rourke, Rosario Dawson and Bruce Willis.
The other great thing are the visuals. I think I have never seen something like this before. It is like a direct copy of the comic pictures and the visuals used are amazing, all in black and white except in some cases where you can see the red of the blood or the yellow and golden of the hair. If I have something bad to say about it it's that the music at parts felt like out of place in comparison with the images, for example when Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is entering in the Roark Farm, that part was a bit odd fitting the images, but there were also other parts where it fitted very well.
A very recommendable movie for all the comic book or graphic novel fans and also for all of those who enjoy a lot R rated movies. Also I have to say that Quentin Tarantino was an invited director in one of the stories so if you're a fan of him, you will also enjoy this a lot.
"Turn the right corner in Sin City, and you can find anything..."
Ahora o nunca (2015)
Spanish Comedy With Not Much New Things, But Still Funny
Well, this is a very cliché story. A story about a wedding and all things start going wrong and the bride and the groom must do anything to be together again.
The story might not be very original but it still provides some very funny moments, specially with Dani Rovira, who is one of the best comedians in Spain right now.
But it also has a lot of cheesy moments with some uncomfortable situations but I think this is normal in this kind of movies.
It's entertaining while you're watching it but it's not the best Spanish movie you can watch.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
13 Reasons Why To Watch This Show
Well, maybe 13 reasons are a lot but I will give some of the main reasons you should watch this amazing show.
01. It tells a real story. It's something that's really happening nowadays in many high schools and most of the times the reasons of why this happens might look stupid but you have to think in that person's place. He or she might be getting through a hard time and maybe they just need someone smiling by their side, but they don't have that.
02. Despite being 13 episodes of almost an hour, each of them, it does not gets boring at any time. The story gets developed with calm, but it makes you want to watch more, to keep discovering more about Hannah's and all the other people life.
03. The actors and actresses are all very young but they're so great in their roles. There are a lot of characters, each one with different personality and these young actors did a great job portraying each one. There are also older actors but the ones who shine here are the younger ones, specially Dylan Minette as Clay Jensen and Katherine Langford as Hannah. They have very good chemistry and they provide very funny, but also very emotional moments
04. One of the things I like it's that you have a lot of character development and they all interact with each other, each one in a different way, and that makes it a lot more realistic.
05. It has the guts to treat its topics like they are. If someone has been raped, you show it, if someone kill himself you show it. It is not scared of showing things in a very dark, graphic and brutal way, and I praise them for that, because you get to see the consequences of the actions thy do.
06. Also, it does not treat Hannah like a victim and all the rest like the guilty of her suicide. You get to see that Hannah was also a difficult person, that she also had problems and that she wasn't that easy to treat. It feels very real because they all look like real persons.
07. The cinematography is great and it helps you differentiate the present from the past, because the past it has a more lighted tone and in the present it's more dark and melancholic.
08. And also a very special mention to the music (from the songs used in the soundtrack to the subtle and soft score created by Eskmo), which works perfectly in all the episodes and gives a very emotional charge to it. I specially love "The Night We Met" by Lord Huron that plays in that winter ball where Hannah and Clay dance together.
These are the main reasons I recommend you this. It's a hard topic to talk about but this show really manages to show it without being afraid of creating controversial or being graphic, but for me, that's one of the best aspects of the show.
Moon (2009)
Moon: Quiet & Clever Sci-Fi
Moon is nothing like the sci-fi movies we usually see right now, like Star Trek, Star Wars and so (but this does not means I don't like that kind of movies). This is more like A Space Oddissey, Solaris or the more recent movies like Arrival or Interstellar.
It tells us the story of a not that distant future where the science has evolved to delete this energy problems by extracting a mineral from the moon surface. In this extracting bases lives Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) who is in a three year contract and is about to return to earth but things start getting more complicated and he has to face many different problems. The story was original and has enough surprises to keep you interested through the whole movie. But at many times it felt a bit slow.paced, like the director didn't knew where he had to move from one place to another.
If we talk about the actors there is not that much to talk because this is mainly a one-actor movie. Sam Rockwell did an awesome performance portraying the astronaut Sam Bell throughout the whole movie and he really captures the feelings and emotions.
And other great thing are the visuals of the moon and the space ships that appear, that looked very real. Also a very special mention to the fantastic score created by Clint Mansell that add a lot to the mystery and emotion of the film.
I Recommend you the movie if you like science fiction and you like it being clever, slow-paced and with a heart.
Jaws (1975)
Jaws Will Probably Keep You Out of the Water for a While
This is one of the first movies that brought Spileberg into the hall of fame of Hollywood and, by now it's still a classic and a masterpiece.
It tells us the story of Chief Brody who has to deal with the problem of a giant great white shark attacking the people in the city he works on. the story is very good and at any moments you feel it boring or nonsense. The characters are very good and the actors involved in here provided very goof performances that really help you feel this fear and panic at the appearance of the shark. if I have only one thing to complain about it's that the characters were a bit predictable and despite the three main characters, the rest did nothing important.
Well, in fact the shark does not appears until the last half an hour or so, until then you only have tension. Many underwater takes, as it were taken from the shark's point of view, swimming between the legs of all the people on the sea and the two-note motif created by Williams and that's even more effective than the appearance of the shark itself. And that's why it's so impressive when you finally see it, trying to destroy the ship of the captain Quill and each time you see a barrel floating out of the water you can feel the tension again.
That's one of the best things of this movie. It really gets you in tension even if by now you can see that the shark was an animatronic, because it was so well created that it will surely frighten you. And as I said above, you have the score by John Williams, who collaborated here for the first time with Spileberg, and created a magnificent, frighten and grandiose score, that marked the quality of their future collaborations.
A highly recommended movie, specially if you are a real fan of Spielebrg, John Williams and fan of the great cinema classics.
