Sweet Magnolias (2020)
Predictable, wholesome, slow, but somehow watchable
Look it's a slow period for new releases on streaming services and what can I say. I have run out of box sets whitest waiting for good stuff to download weekly. This is not high drama. It is unbelievably predicatable and there's zero chance of any plot twists. It's also slow and a bit too doo good god squad for me, normally. Saying all that most of the characters are likeable and most of them are attractive enough to keep everyone who is sis gendered happy. On that it's tame, no sex scenes, no and I mean no swearing, no nudity etc etc. So safe to watch with the family. The acting is good too, I think 3 seasons is enough though.
Deadloch (2023)
Nope, the Eddie character is beyond irritating. Kate Box is
I was going okay. I love Kate Bix and she's excellent and the rest of the characters were bearable. The second the Darwin DI arrived I switched off. Which is a pity because the scenery is lovely, Tom Ballard was good and I am sure if you could get past the Eddie idiot it would be a good series. Not a comedy, but light and entertaining enough to be worth watching. People are saying she's overacting, I don't agree, I just think she's doing what the script demanded of her, so not her fault.
Nope, the Eddie character is beyond irritating. Kate Box is from Adelaide where I live and she's always worth a watch.
Ticket to Paradise (2022)
Wrong time wrong place
I couldn't get past how obvious it was that 90% of the film was filmed in Australia. No effort was made, or very little, there were cane fields for gods sake, to make it look like Bali. I live in South Australia, a 4 hour flight from Bali and have been many times. Their economy which is 100% tourism was decimated in Covid and the only shot in the film of their beautiful island is 30 seconds at Tanah Lot. Queeensland looks gorgeous though. Which is great but why bother setting it in Bali at all, a lame nod to Eat Pray Love maybe. Also Julia Roberts and Clooney have zero chemistry and Robert's wore the weirdest clothes throughout. 6.5/10.
True Things (2021)
Why did I stick with it till the end?
I love Ruth Wilson and don't mind the lead guy (it's pretty much just them) but this sucked. Jude Law has a directing credit as does Wilson. They should be well embarrassed. Nothing happens and no one cares. The acting is fine not horrendous but the story is so weak and predictable that your time is best spent doing something else.
It also bizarrely looks like it was made in the 80s; the quality is poor and there are some truly awful jerky panning shots at the start.
For once the bad ratings are very justified. Don't bother. There's plenty of good films to watch in areas of this drivel. 4/10.
After Life (2019)
Heartwarming, funny, sad- Ricky Gervais proving once again he's a genius
Lovely. Percy cast. I especially like Penelope Wilton and Peter Egan who delighted many years ago in Ever Decreasing Circles. Ashley Jensen (Extras and Agatha Raisin) is great as the long suffering would-be love interest. I laughed. I cried.
The Girlfriend Experience: Control Shift (2021)
Ignore bad reviews and see for yourself
I'm enjoying this series. Yes Iris has terrible hair. Yes it's a tad slow. But it's pretty good. Not as good as S1 but better than S2.
Banished (2015)
It's a limited series, so don't expect another season.
David Wenhams accent and in fact acting, is appalling. Surely they could have found a bona fide British toff to play Philip?
Apart from that it is top notch. Great cast, quite witty script at times and some lovely scenery in New South Wales. Most importantly a great yarn, based on real people.
Clarice (2021)
Ignore the negative reviews. This is great TV
The ONLY thing wrong with this is that I can't binge it all in one go. Great cast, pacey, gritty, great.
The Wilds (2020)
Ignore the low ratings.
I'm NOT a teenager. I have two though. I watched this and have recommended it to them. I loved it. Spot on. Fast paced, good acting from a 90% female diverse cast. Even Rachel is tolerable.
Anne (2017)
Watch this, you'll be glad you did
My 19 year old daughter and I both adore this show. I'm 52 so it truly appeals to a wide age range. Everything is perfect. Acting, casting, cinematography, locations, pace, tears and laughter.
Modern Love: So He Looked Like Dad. It Was Just Dinner, Right? (2019)
Nowhere near as bad as everyone is making out
Not the best but still wellade with great acting all round.
The Final Quarter (2019)
Heads should have rolled
There are some media personalities that, editing for effect notwithstanding, should have lost their jobs. Watch it and you'll see who the good guys and girls are. I hope, passionately, that this film is shown to school children and all adults alike and that it helps transform what is otherwise a great country.
We as Australians need to own the fact that we invaded this country and literally shot the indigenous population for sport, through ignorance and fear. And nothing has changed. Walled Ali has it banged to rights in this astounding documentary.
