Blue Mountain State (2010)
Good light hearted comedy if you don't take it to seriously
Woah, i came on here expecting to write a review defending this show from critics, but with an average rating of 8.4 stars i now find that i am marking it down! Despite this, i feel my review is positive.
Watch this show expecting a work or art or something serious and your not going to enjoy it. Go in expecting to watch a lighthearted comedy and you won't be disappointed.
The show follows to exploits of playboy college quarterback Alex Moran (Darin Lee Brooks) and his best friend Sammy (Chris Romano) at party school Blue Mountain State.
Memorable performance from Alan Ritchson who plays a kind of anti-hero as team captain Thad Castle.
If you enjoyed movies like Van Wilder Party Liaison or Zoolander, this is worth a watch.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
The Return of... the same old stuff
I really wanted to love this movie...
Sad to say that this movie failed on so many levels. They basically rehashed plot elements from the previous movies and added special effects. Almost every line of the movie was a nod to a scene in the previous movies, which would have been nice once or twice but it's every single a character opens his/her mouth or interacts with an object.
In typical JJ Abrams fashion, they want to go "one up" on everything that has come before. The original trilogy has a Death star that can destroy planets? We'll have a Death Planet that can destroy solar systems.
You have huge star ships "Star Destroyers" so we'll have even bigger star destroyers.
You have an evil Empire trying to dominate the Galaxy, we'll have an even more evil Empire "The First Order" who want to cleanse the Galaxy? Your resistance is ill equipped but brave and skilled. Our resistance will be even worse equipped and even more skilled.
The comparisons go on and on (new more flashy light saber's, new more extreme evil Emperor) Why? Could you not move the plot forward without making things more extreme? Throw in some wooden acting (although not the worst i've seen) and you have some idea what you are dealing with.
Friday Night Lights (2006)
First Rate
Great TV show.
The best thing about this TV show is the great acting across the board. Characters are complex, believable and for the most part likable, dealing with realistic scenario's.
So many shows are guilty of having characters react in unrealistic ways and resorting to sensationalism to move the plot along, rather than considering what would realistically happen next. Not so here.
The writing is first rate and it is shot in a "unique" way. I've seen some criticism of the camera work but this have never bothered me, it just adds character to the show and a sense that you are really spying on peoples lives rather than actors acting out a story for our amusement.
Gripping.
The Office (2005)
Well worth a watch
Being from the UK, a lot of people i know refuse to watch this show as a copy of the original.
This isn't helped by the fact that the first season is basically a carbon copy of the UK version with American actors.
Get past this and you will be pleasantly surprised, it matches then surpasses the original (which i also love. Many of the characters are charming and likable although I've marked the show down as sometimes they can act unrealistically and in later season's it does get somewhat repetitive.
As a rule of thumb it goes downhill when Michael leaves, which is a bit weird and i genuinely enjoy the performances by his "replacements" Will Ferrell and James Spader.
Anyway 7/10, well worth a watch, particularly up to season 7 (and once you go that far you will want to watch the rest!)
