Clerks III (2022)
A disaster of a final chapter
I have no idea what Kevin Smith was thinking! He has systematically reduced the brilliance of the original Clerks through all of his vain attempts to recapture the initial greatness with each sequel. Clerks 3 was the most disappointing and depressing.
He created characters that we related to, loved, and rooted for. However, in Smith's mind, life ends at 50. Every character is STILL struggling with life, life choices and apparently, heart disease. Much like the overkill of Star Wars and superhero references, the message and references of Smith's heart attack is just too much. Sure, Randall and Dante's aspirations weren't heading towards any kind of happiness in adulthood -- but did Dante and Randall deserve the dismal ending of being alone with only each other?
This film is a prime example of creating something brilliant and reducing it to absolute crap. I tried to appreciate the attempts at sentimentality, but it fell as short as Dante's funeral.
You People (2023)
Awkward and disappointing
I wanted to like this movie, bc I love Jonah Hill. However, it was an awkward regurgitation of over the top stereotypes in an interracial love story. Been there, done that!
The storyline was rushed, and lacked any other character development besides perceived biases and confrontation, that went on in every scene. It was kinda ridiculous in the way that the same over-the-top embarrasing scene was filmed several different ways and cut into a film.
I guess this movie was filmed during the pandemic bc the two lead characters barely touched each other.
It wasn't horrible, but it was a waste of talent from an amazing cast.
I Used to Go Here (2020)
A film about SIU Carbondale, not filmed at SIU Carbondale
I think this film could have had a lot more character if it were actually filmed and Carbondale and at SIU. I'm not really sure why the director chose to just use exterior shots of a few places in Carbondale.. For anyone who has ever went to SIU, the generic substitutions for filming locations really took away from the movie.
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Masterful, haunting, unforgettable
I didn't watch this movie for over a year because of bad reviews of the movie being slow and dull. I found it to be quite the contrary. I was blown away! I admire the writers and actors choices. It was a raw and honest story! Anyone who has suffered a horrible loss, not to mention several losses, know that what comes after is sometimes difficult to look at. Their doesn't need to be any "fluff" in this story The cast was incredible in expressing how people deal with grief, some leave, some hide, some think they are not worthy of a second chance at life. It is a beautiful, but difficult story of a lost man who loses his brother, and years before that his 3 children. Each scene was well done & powerful. Every actor portraying their frame of mind very well, the dynamic of their relationship with each character, etc.
Affleck was amazing. Bravo!
Destination Wedding (2018)
When you need something to sedate you
This movie is absolutely terrible. It's awkward, dull, unenthusiastic and pointless. It's 1 hour and 45 minutes of these two having one monotone conversation after another in a feeble, generic and ironic attempt to be funny. If I need to get some sleep, I'll forgo the Ambien and put on this snoozer fest, and listen to Keanu and Winona read me to sleep.
Insatiable (2018)
Worth a watch if you have a sense of humor!
I was floored by the hate this show got from critics! I finished the season (before I found out people wanted to get it cancelled) I loved it! Many people are and were bullied in high school for being over weight. It effs you up. This is one fictional take on it. This show is a dark comedy, but truly hilarious. Dallas Roberts steals the show. In many ways he reminds me of Jon Ritter. The whole cast is great actually, and I laughed at every single episode. Give it a shot and ignore the people who are saying this show will promote body issues or whatever. It's satire, with the message that your beauty from inside is what counts.
