Zombieland (2013)
Pathetic
Poor acting, poor casting, poor script, just pathetic. Why anyone would bother wasting any amount of money on this rubbish is beyond me.
I suppose you could overlook the acting - they're not going to beat the original casting in the film. You could even pretend that the extremely low budget make-up is just one more attempt at making this a comedy.
But when you think about how brilliant the film was, how seamless it was, how the effects just came together, how the acting worked, you can't compare the two. Why they made this poor, low-budget weak attempt to ride on the coat tails of success of the film is beyond me.
Save yourself precious time, don't bother.
Rizzoli & Isles (2010)
What You Have To Remember Is This...
Det. Jane Rizzoli & Dr. Maura Isles aren't lesbians.
This doesn't mean we can't imagine they are, or wish that they were. It seems that from the very beginning, when Dr. Isles re-set Det. Rizzoli's broken nose in what seemed to be a tender and caring gesture (as tender as one can be, resetting a broken bone...) these two have shared a kinship that surpasses the limitations of the words 'best friends'.
The crime-side of this show has been somewhat over-looked for the relationship between the two stars, but it is still an integral part. With an outstanding supporting cast and brilliant writers, there is no reason why this show can't continue for many seasons to come.
Granted, the weekly homicides aren't that brain-busting. If you consider it is generally the person they only show once (and briefly) in the first fifteen minutes, then it's never really that hard to surmise 'whodunnit' but there is still enough suspense to keep watchers intrigued.
Ultimately, IMHO, this show gives the fans what we've been looking for since the end of Xena: Warrior Princess. Two strong female leads with an extremely close relationship that frankly, could be already considered a lesbian relationship, considering this - sex has nothing to do with sexuality.
Even if the lesbian angle is not your cup of tea, don't worry. Really, neither hetero or homo-sexuality is rammed down our throats. Jane & Maura really are just the best of friends, and that in itself is a wonderful thing to have on our screens. A close female friendship without the rivalry we've seen in other shows, without the competitiveness we've seen hundreds of times over.
As Det. Rizzoli declared - We're LLBFFs. Long-love Best Friends Forever. And there's nothing wrong with that!
Falling Skies (2011)
It's Like Making Popcorn The Old Fashioned Way
You have to be patient. You have to watch carefully, you have to give it your full attention.
And you also have to keep in mind, it's not perfect, the show isn't even trying to be perfect. It's trying to be one group's interpretation of how things may go in the after-math of an alien invasion. Maybe it's not the way you'd script it, but it is still a great portrayal, or at least that's how I feel after seeing the first five episodes.
My only concern is the re-running of the storyline 'Oh, they stole our children. We got them back! Oh, there's another child we have to rescue. Oh, there's a guy who seems to be giving our children to the aliens in exchange for protection'. We get it. The aliens want the children. We want the children. Stop ramming that fact home and the show's golden to me.
I am personally quite keen to see this continue, in the hopes that it would be like Earth 2, showing us how a stripped down society would function. Let's see the first season, maybe even second, deal with the aliens and finding some way to defeat them. Then, season three will be the rebuilding. I wouldn't go so far as to say it will continue much after that, but it would be nice to have a well-rounded show that has a great start, interesting beginning and neatly tied-up ending.
As for the cast, I find them all great in their roles. I never much cared for Noah before, but he plays the role of Tom very well. I love the perhaps intentional play on the character's names - Weaver also being the name of the 'boss' in E.R, Noah having to bend to Weaver's will, quite amusing.
Moon is just gorgeous and I cannot wait to see her character develop more. The hints of romance between Anne and Tom are disappointing, it would be nice to not see your typical romance storyline, because I'm not interested in them getting together. I'm interested in them surviving.
Supporting cast? All great. I would like to see another female role, to help balance things out some, but that's just me. I have a sneaking suspicion Tom's wife isn't dead, so perhaps it will happen.
If you're looking for a show that will 'blow your mind', then look elsewhere. Certainly the idea and the theories behind 'Falling Skies' are quite thought provoking. Are the effects brilliant? No, they're for a television audience. They're decent enough, that's for sure. But I believe this show has staying power for at least a good run, it's enjoyable and comic at times, serious when it needs to be. Ten out of ten!
