Hex (2004)
Don't believe the adverts
I was first fooled into watching this show by constantly hearing 'The British Buffy' all the time on the adverts.
I'll make this clear, this show is not like Buffy. It's mostly just a clichéd teen drama, with a mention of demons every now and then.
I watched the first series and I wasn't that impressed, I was constantly waiting for something exciting to happen, it seemed like all anybody did was talk. Now that wouldn't have been that bad, if the dialog was the least bit interesting, it was just very wooden. The characters aren't that well written, I just didn't feel for any of them, if they were in life or death situations, I honestly didn't care what happened to them. There was minimal character development and many things that happened were entirely pointless.
When series two began, I gave the show a second chance. After three episodes I have given up, the show didn't improve at all.
If you're a fan of Buffy who is thinking of watching the show based on the adverts, give it a try, you might like it, just don't watch it expecting anything like Buffy ... or anywhere near as good as Buffy.
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Enjoyable, but leaves you puzzled.
I enjoyed this film, but I was left a little puzzled at the end by what I'd just watched in terms of what type of movie this is.
It starts off as a very Tarantino-esquire film, it's clear that he wrote it as his famous dialogue is present. It's an enjoyable crime thriller much along the lines of Tarantino's other works (such as Pulp Fiction & Reservoir Dogs) but with a bit of Robert Rodriguez flare shown during the action sequences.
Then with about 50-ish minutes left, the style film changes entirely. It becomes another film, it goes from stylish crime thriller to random vampire action movie. It's almost as if Tarantino left the room while writing the script and somebody wrote the rest of the film for him, it loses it's Tarantino charm and becomes a predictable, gore fest, vampire flick.
I'm a fan of Vampire films, so I still enjoyed the movie, but I can see why others don't like it. The acting is of high quality, especially from Geroge Clooney who outdoes himself, and in parts saves the film.
8/10 - Watch with an open mind.
Blade: Trinity (2004)
Long live the King.
Okay, let's get this out of the way first. If you are going to see Blade Trinity and expecting a cinematic masterpiece, you'll come out disappointed.
If you go expecting a fun, action-packed addition to the Blade franchise, you'll enjoy it. Just don't expect it to be better than the first two. This is a very different film to the first two Blade movies, this concentrates much more on action than any real plot, and where as the previous films mainly focus on Blade (with supporting characters like Whistler and the Blood-Pack), In 'Blade Trinity', Blade (Wesley Snipes) is pretty much shoved out of the spotlight to make room for his two new allies Hannibal King (Ryan Reynolds) & Abigail Whistler (Jessica Biel).
I'm not sure if this was Goyer's intention, but Hannibal King easily steals the show, any witty one liners that may once been used by Blade, have all gone to King and then some more humour has been thrown into the mix. I know many Blade fans are skeptical of the added humour to the film, but I personally think it's a welcome addition to the franchise, King's wisecracks are my favourite parts of the movie. The acting isn't exactly Oscar-winning (especially with the villains), but the actors do but in a good performance (Ryan Reynolds & HHH put in much better performances than I expected). The fight scenes are more plentiful in 'Trinity' than in Blade two (which was mostly just shootouts) and are done well. I think Goyer has had some good ideas with this, such as the abilities of Dracula and a few references to the advanced 'Reaper' strain of Vampire.
'Blade Trinity' is not perfect, it has is faults, some more obvious than others, but to some up, this is a fun, exciting action movie. When you watch it, don't think too much, just sit back, watch and enjoy the ride.
8/10
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (2004)
Best UK show on TV at the moment.
When The show 'Little Britain' ended, I felt that TV was lacking in any hilarious new comedies. Then I saw an advert for 'Garth Marenghi's Darkplace' so I decided to watch it.
Since then I've been hooked, I have never seen anything like this show before. It is truly amazing. This proves that you don't need clever scripts, great acting or impressive special effects.
Highlights for me include, Episode 4's bike chase, Episode 1's graveyard shootout and well, pretty much the entire show.
This show is pure comic genious.
I'll finish with a quote...
"She was like a candle in the wind ... unreliable"
