The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box (2013)
Such a fun movie
All in all a great film for older children and adults. Both Sheen and Neill are brilliant; just wish we saw more of them (especially Sheen, who is at his most charming). Interesting and complex storyline with many twists and turns.
My biggest complaint was the main character. Aneurin Barnard is hopelessly miscast. Other than his big eyes, he never connects with the role or with the audience. I know he is a good actor; I've seen him in other roles. This however was. Not a good performance and it brings the whole movie down. Perhaps that was is why there were no sequels. Though one without his character would have been interesting.
Home Again (2017)
Very charming
Was in a mood for something sappy, and this proved even better than expected. Not a Reese fan, but she was good as a woman trying to find her feet after a separation and move. A little too understanding to my mind, but she's the lead, so what you gonna do. Martin Sheen was great as the not at all evil ex, who is also navigating change. And anything with Candice Bergen is wonderful.
The three dudes who land in this story were interesting; each with own storyline and personality, so not cookie cutter at all. Jon Ruditnisky was the breakout one for me: he has the most depth and really lit up any scene he was in.
Even the kids were wonderful! Each charming in their own different way, with own worries and foibles.
All in all a charming, well written, though admittedly light and not overwrought, tale. Only Oscar it'd ever see is the one that appears in one scene, but still a great film to cuddle up with.
Sports Night (1998)
It holds up, even years later
I loved this series when it first started and having just watched it all again, I still love it. Amazing characters, great story lines... this show kept a person who is not interested in sports engaged every time.
And in my opinion, the episode where Dan gets writer's block, remains one of the funniest episode of TV ever. Watch it and see if you agree.
Aaron Sorkin is an inspired show creator and it is a testament to his ability to pick winners that so many of the actors he selected for this show, even the guest shots, have gone on to have amazing careers. Even in other Sorkin shows.
