AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
Entertaining Garbage
The franchise was now going down hill, accelerated by unmemorable characters incomparable to Ripley, Dutch or even Harrigan. You actually remember those characters. This even worse than the last film except that this one's actually rared R. Despite this a lot of the violence is laughable and hardly enjoyable. The only thing rewarding in the first film was the detail and amount of effort put into the creatures. Here, it is sh*t. An CGI chest-burster is very unconvincing, lighting is so dark I never know what the hell is happening, and lots of B-movie plot and dismal characters. I mean find an insult to the over all once respectable franchises.
The sole Predator in this movie is pretty cool, but everything else sucks. This movie actually gets funny! Did you know there's a part where a pizza delivery boy gets beat up by his love interest's vengeful ex-boyfriend? What, you have seen that before? Like a thousand times? Well, the love interest dies, hahahaah!!! This has to be the pathetic reasoning of the Strause brothers. Any other character isn't even worthy of humiliating.
My work is done.
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
Bad Character...Good Action
Now let me start by saying the characters in this movie aren't all that impressive. In fact you can flat out say they suck. What made the Aliens franchise, well at the every least the first two, so great is that you connected with the characters. You wanted them to make it out alive, and when they didn't, you actually gave a damn. When the characters die in this movie, I just don't care. Not to mention the story was complete bull.
Instead of taking place in the future, or on some distant planet, this takes place on Earth in the present day, Predators used to be Gods to the Mayans, Aliens treated like fodder for generic horror movie, temple was rebuilt after it got completely blown apart with the force of a nuclear bomb...what the hell?! This plot is complete and utter crap!! And the score was mostly..what else, sh*t.
But in the movie's defense, the Predators look awesome, as do the xenomorphs. It's been around six or seven years since this was released, so after all this time it comes down to the fact that simply don't walk into this movie expecting deep characterization, a flowing and coherent plot, memorable music or even R-rated violence. After all, it is no Steven Spielberg or James Cameron, it's Paul W.S. Anderson. That says it all right there. just expect a decent action flick.
Hulk (2003)
Hulk Brought to life
Hulk is one of the best Marvel heroes ever. I remember seeing this film back when it first came out and being astonished to to finally see him on the big screen. The special effects are outstanding and the Hulk looks so real you could just reach out and touch him. Eric Bana did an excellent job, as well as Sam Elliot and the rest of the cast. And the action sequences were all heart thumping to say the least. And the icing on top of it all, Danny Elfman delivers a grand score that makes the movie ever more involving. Many bash it, but I view it as one of the best superhero films. At times the pacing is a tad off, I'll admit, the only real consensus being that audiences did not want deep characters and a plot that made you think. They just wanted more action and a trimmed down storyline. Sounds about right.
I Am Legend (2007)
Simply Brilliant
This movie has one of Will Smith's best performances with the right emotions and never ruining a moment with inappropriate comedy. The whole film is a good balance of drama, suspense and action, not to mention terror. The film can be heartbreaking at times, to the point I myself was drawn to tears. I can't say much about this movie without spoiling it for those who may have not seen it, but the score by James newton Howard is saddening and one of his best.
The atmosphere is full of a silent tension. Despite it's short length, the film is an escapade that must be seen to be believed. Over all great film and I definitely recommend it.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Could've been better...
Now X3 is not a horrible movie, don't get me wrong. But is a bit of a let down. Unfortunately Bryan Singer wasn't able to direct this film because he was occupied with "Superman Returns", so who steps up to the plate- Brett Ratner. If you've seen "Rush Hour 3", then you honestly have a pretty good idea what to expect from this film. The film is over all too short. Consider this, the first film was under two hours, simply a film overall to introduce the characters and set up their relationships. The second is a two hour elaboration of the first, with even more characters and though many problems are solved, many new arise along with them. It was the perfect set up for a third film. This film garnishes that in favor of a mediocre purely action driven storyline.
Cyclops, who was played so well as James Marsden, is basically not even apart of the plot. And Jean is a major plot point, but she says so little she becomes like a ghost to everyone else. And the last action scene on Alcatraz just makes little sense and was poorly executed. The Brotherhood's army felt like a bunch of random normal people who got killed off way too easily, and Magneto, a God in every right, has his powers drained away from him in a fraction of a second with a few tiny dosages of this so called cure. it was just rock bottom rushed plot development. I mean if you're the average movie goer who loves action you'll probably love it, but if you're a real X Men fan you'll be let down.
X2 (2003)
Perfect Sequel
this film is the perfect example of a flawless sequel. Once again Bryan Singer has made a masterpiece. All the cast members return, such a welcoming prospect from the start. plus there many new and exciting characters, all acted excellently. Alan Cumming was just astonishing as NightCrawler, while the sexy Kelly Hu really wasn't given much dialogue in the film but this is expected due to the nature of the character and her focus in the story. Brian Cox was pretty damn good in it as well, coming off as very threatening and sinister. And Aaron Stanford, Shawn Ashmore and Anna Paquin get a lot more development this time around. Ever character gets their adequate screen time and Singer just handled them so well, it amazes me to this day. Kudos to Zak Penn and the other writers.
In this movie we get the best interpretation of Wolverine's past life, which was so horrendously raped in the new spin off "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". Plus the score was just plain great, John Ottoman is definitely among my favorite composers. This movie is the best of the trilogy plus the stupid as f*ck spin off. I say definitely go out and buy this if you haven't seen it.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
Very Disappointed...
When I went to go see this movie I already knew it wasn't going to be that good, but at times it was god awful painful to watch. My face cringed when ever I heard a campy or cheesy line, which in this film is too often to bear. And onto the next point, the Weapon X team was badly done. Zero looked like a wanna be Matrix character. The character Chris Bradley a.k.a. Bolt was not a part of the original comic book team either. Where the f*ck is Omega Red?! And what the, isn't Sabretooth supposed to have long blond hair?? Plus the love story is pathetically done, and during it all we have Hugh Jackman yelling every five minutes to distract us from this God awful film's many faults. Last but not least the totally massacred Deadpool. Giving him all those powers and his mouth actually sown shut, I ask again, what the f*ck?! Comic Dead pool, hell Deadpool from animated features like "Hulk vs. Wolverine" portray him much more accurately. I can't fathom why people would actually like this raping of the original material. To sum it up this film is a waste of time and money. Don't bother buying. If you see it, you'd better be renting...
X-Men (2000)
Good Start to the Trilogy
This film has everything you need to start off a movie series on the right foot. The action is tremendous, and the characters were great. the casting choices were just so on par, with James Marsden as Cyclops, Famke Janssen as the sexy yet timid Jean Grey and oh my lord Ian McKellen as Magneto. Not enough for you? the very awesome Patrick Stewart stars, and Halle Berry who I usually find dismal was pretty decent in this movie. Hugh Jackman looks pretty bad ass as Wolverine, and he can carry the role quite well too.I believe Bryan Singer did a really good job with this film. And the score by the deceased Michael Kamen was simply riveting through out.
