Friends (1994)
Chums
Friends is great, there is so much to say about it. I have always loved this show and have watched every episode so many times now I've decided that I can't watch it anymore because I no longer enjoy it in the same way. I thought I'd actually stopped liking it altogether but when I saw the reunion it made me so happy. I am so jealous of people who have never seen it and get to watch it for the first time! I will just patiently wait until they do another season or something just like all the other shows and movies are doing!
Also I would just like to say for the record that Ross and Rachel are an awful couple (I have disliked them since it originally aired but couldn't work out why until I grew up. I still like them individually) and the best couple are Carol and Susan - they should have had WAY more screen time. It has also not aged very well in some ways but is still funny in other ways.
The Beach (2000)
6.7 - Love it but for different reasons
This film came out when I was very young and not long after I had managed to get my hands on a copy of Titanic which had left quite the impression on me, especially with what happens to Leo's character at the end so I basically had no interest in anything else he was in for a while (in my defence I was a small impressionable child lol) and just forgot all about The Beach until a few years back when it was put on Netflix. I have this thing where I watch very well known films years after everyone else and they end up becoming a favourite - this is the case for me with The Beach. I'm glad I watched it when I did because I don't think I would have resonated with it in the same way if I had watched it sooner.
The main reason why I love it because it reminds me of my uncle who used to travel loads - especially to Thailand - he passed away young years ago but I know he was so happy when travelling so it makes me happy when I watch it. The ending scene also reminds me of my own travels in the sense that it evokes a certain feeling that you get when returning back to normality after travelling. Someone uploaded this scene to YouTube years ago and it constantly gets comments from people about their own experiences - it's really nice.
The story is a little weird and gets quite scary at times - there are quite a few characters who do very morally wrong things and it's very messed up. I guess it just shows how nothing is perfect and living the way they were, in a place they never should have been was never going to work out/last forever. I also learned after that the production really damaged the area when preparing for filming and that is really not ok. Ironic!
I'd love to see a sequel of some sort and have heard there may be a tv show which would be cool, but might have to stick to reading the book it's based on!
Doctor Sleep (2019)
7/10
Really enjoyed this and it's cool to see both references to The Shining and actual locations and characters that were in it - the actors who played Wendy and Jack bore quite a resemblance to Shelley and Jack - especially Shelley! The actress did a really great job of re-creating Shelley's scenes. However there were some deaths in it that I found completely unnecessary and later found out that in the book they didn't even die! So stupid. Worth a watch for fans of The Shining though.
Ready or Not (2019)
Really enjoyed it despite the goriness
So many movies these days can be similar/predictable so it's nice when one comes along that's different and surprises you. It is sick and twisted but I enjoyed it and there are some good twists, plus Samara Weaving is in it and I think she's great!
Titanic (1997)
One of the best
Such a great movie with great actors, a great story, great cinematography and I think the visual effects still come across really well so they must have been amazing when it came out. I was good few years too young to watch Titanic when it first came out so when I finally got to watch it, it was the best day ever.. until the end. Absolutely devastated.. and I was for a long time too.
However, I now (controversially) think the ending is actually perfect. As it is based on a real story, having happened in very different times (it may have played out very differently if it had happened in 1997 and this only becomes more true as time goes on) I think we needed to have our hearts broken to truly show us the sheer trauma many people would have experienced. Jack and Rose could not live happily ever after because that is not the reality of this story.
All in all, the whole thing was just so brilliantly done and I am only taking a star off for the historical inaccuracies.
Old (2021)
Really good film
I remember seeing the trailer for this at another movie and was really looking forward to seeing it at the cinema but because of the bad reviews I didn't bother and waited until it was on a streaming service - what a mistake that was. It was really enjoyable, the ending could've been better but all in all it is a good movie, not too sure what everyone is talking about.
The Batman (2022)
Good but too long
I'm obviously not enough of a Batman fan to give this a higher score, I really wanted to love it but I just liked it. Robert Pattinson was brilliant, as was Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman (one of my favourite characters) as was everyone else. Cinematography was amazing and I had completely forgotten there had been rumours about Barry Keoghan playing the Joker and he's someone who I've been a fan for years so was pleased to see that brief part; however it was just too long for me and I honestly nearly fell asleep! One for big Batman/comic/Robert fans.
White Lines (2020)
Loved it
I actually watched this quite a bit after it came out. I couldn't believe I hadn't watched it sooner. I always loved and was aware of Ibiza culture growing up in the 90s so its something I'm interested in anyway. Brilliant show, only wish there could've been more. Absolutely gutted it wasn't renewed for a second season even if that meant it was a spin off or something similar with different characters or a focus on some of the more minor characters from season 1 since most of the questions were answered in this first season. Highly recommend.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Great film
I find that many films these days are so predictable, but this one had me guessing the entire way through - and I was hooked from the beginning. Meryl was iconic as always, Jonah hilarious as always and really great performances from Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan and Leo. I also completely failed to recognise Cate Blanchett until I looked it up half way through but could see it after I knew. I really enjoyed her character and Tyler Perry's character. Great performances from absolutely everyone, great plot and themes but I am taking two stars off for the very small but weird subplot which featured Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi because it was so random and unnecessary and kind of took away some of the quality of the movie for me. I hope everyone waited until the very end to see the post credit scene which I really liked. Will there be a sequel?! Haha.
Father Christmas Is Back (2021)
Very cheesy
The storyline isn't that great and it's very cheesy, but nonetheless I did like this film. Having big names in it probably helped, I love all the actors in it and have enjoyed lots of their previous works. I thought Paulina's obsession with the Beatles was pretty funny as well.
A Castle for Christmas (2021)
who the HELL are the Donatellis?!
We accurately predicted a few of the main things that happen in this movie very quickly - like who the love interest of the main character would be and how the two characters (Myles and Sophie) would grow close. It is very cringey and predictable - Myles' dog takes an instant liking to Sophie even though very strangely "he doesn't normally like strangers" and Sophie remarks that she will have no reason to go into Myles' bedroom to which we said "bet she does end up in there". Lol.
Everything WAS predictable up until a man and a woman show up to check into the hotel that some of the main characters work or frequent at. The woman scours out the place and then gives the name of Donatelli. We theorised that one of them was the ex wife/husband of either Myles of Sophie, coming to throw a spanner in the works. But nothing happens with them. Who are they?! What was the purpose of their scene?! Why were they checking into this hotel?! Why were they offered/do they take the Christmas Romance package; champagne in the evening, breakfast in bed, all the Netflix you can binge?! I simply cannot rest until I have the answers to all of these questions.
Very cheesy film, we laughed quite a bit, especially when Sophie and Myles almost kiss and Sophie looks like she's eating his breath, followed by an awkward handshake/hug where she proceeds to smell his ear. Rewound that a few times.
*Update - I can now rest easily as I found out that the two mysterious characters are from "The Christmas Switch", so it's supposed to be a crossover. Still, not everyone has seen these movies (including me) so it just comes across random and makes things confusing. Should've been made a bit more obvious I.e by way of making a few more references and indicating the existence of the other movies.
Halloween Kills (2021)
Can't wait for the final instalment
WAY more violent and vengeful than it needed to be, I know Michael loves killing people or whatever and totally get that the characters are very angry but it was a little much and times. Overall very good though so I don't understand all these really low scores.
The Voyeurs (2021)
Don't understand the bad reviews
I really enjoyed this film - thought it was really good. The plot and acting is great and I found myself half way through the film suddenly realising how disturbing what they were actually doing was because of how well the story was told. It has some great/shocking/sad twists and the cinematography is beautiful. Taking 2 stars off for the ending which could've been better plus didn't get answers to certain questions. Don't understand all these low star ratings though, would definitely recommend.
Fear Street: 1666 (2021)
Horrendous accents aside, this is the best one
This is my favourite of the 3. Part 1 was pretty bad - not sure how I managed to finish it. Part 2 was really good but this one was absolutely the best. So much happens in the first hour, when the first part of the movie started wrapping up I thought ok, it must nearly be over - I checked the run time and it had only been going for just over an hour! I felt like it had been much longer than that and I wasn't even ready for it to finish yet so I was glad there was still a good 50 mins to go. I liked the endings for the characters and I liked how it returned to the original timeline.
The only thing that bothered me was the accents of the people in 1666, which sounded like very bad Irish accents.. which is very bizarre as people in this time (the first settlers/pilgrims/puritans) were originally from England.. not sure if the accents were supposed to be accents from the west/south west England in those times but they didn't sound like it - the only one that sounded English was "real Sarah Frier" although her accent seemed to change to the bad Irish accent at the end of the film. With that being said, even though I thought that was going to ruin it in the beginning, the rest of the movie made up for it so I can overlook that and still give it a 7. Wish there were more movies to be honest!
Fear Street: 1978 (2021)
So much better than the first
Really enjoyed this one - good story line - similar features to the first so maybe that's why it flowed better. Again didn't really seem like the era it was supposed to be set in, just seemed as if it was present day which is disappointing but I still like it despite this. Not cringeworthy either. Worth a watch but you will have to sit through the first film beforehand!
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Bleh
I feel like this had so much potential. It started out well, but the storyline did not flow well and it didn't make sense. It was overly cringey in some parts as well and it didn't give me a 90s vibe at all. I got quite bored half way through if I'm being honest. There was a twist near the end when I thought it was wrapping up which was probably one of the best things about it, but then it went a bit weird again before it finished. The actors were very good and the preview for the second one looks like it might be good so will probably still watch that, as that will probably explain a bit more than this one has.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Very cringe
Cringey and far fetched/weird storyline but it was good to watch.. preferred the first one.
Back to the Future (1985)
This movie is the best
Watched this movie for the first time only a few years back and couldn't believe I'd never watched it before. It's a really good story. So many different characters and scenes, story flows well although the mother/son thing is quite weird. 3rd instalment is my favourite.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Freddie deserved much better than this
I only went to see this movie because the title song is one of my favourite songs, so not being a huge fan I went in with basically no expectations. It didn't disappoint - I could have easily given it an 8/10 based on that initial viewing.
After, I decided to watch the real LiveAid set to see how similar it was to the film and ended up watching other performances, interviews etc and I started to notice a lot of inaccuracies and contradictions in relation to the film. I know they have to pack a lot into just a short amount of time and "it's a biopic not a documentary" but this is ridiculous.
I don't understand why they make it seem as though Freddie had next to no friends and lived alone, tried to break up/betray the band by having a solo career and then apparently before LiveAid it was "we haven't performed together in years" when they had literally just finished "The Works" tour two months before? The vilification of Paul was also very overdone and it seems (according to his family) things were made up about him too?! No need to make up things about him to vilify him when what he did at the end of the film (true-ish) was bad enough.. Seems quite vindictive of whoever wrote him like that but I guess it's easy to do when he's not around to defend himself. On a lighter note, I would also have loved to see a bit more of a background on the other band members, as they all have very interesting stories too.
When watching the film again with a different perspective I was surprised and annoyed that it was difficult to sit through because of all the timeline errors - this was worse than the other stuff.
It is a fun film but I don't really understand how it won so many awards. Rami is a brilliant actor but I don't see him as Freddie. Gwilym was amazing as Brian May.
The 4 stars are for the great actors and for properly introducing me to Queen. It is clear though that Freddie was totally deserving of a much better movie and this is just not worthy.
