Messiah (2020)
Mehdi Dehbi, alone, is worth the time
For those that watched this - merit comes from all sorts of angles.
Mehdi Dehbi's performance, alone, makes this a total cinemafile gem. He absolutely obliterated the role and made something of absolute note. Nobody else could have pulled this off. I can't fathom it could have worked.
The story is bold in many ways. Many lower IQ folks are offended on the "Religious" level in these comments. They make it clear they are barely capable of understanding the real depth of Christianity, Islam, or even general Human Philosophy.
The story here & the acting are very sincere and how that story was written to play out is astoundingly clever and smart.
Take the time to see this. At no point was I at a loss for what was happening. It's a symphony of pragmatic "what if" scenarios with very imaginative and sincere possibilities and social outcomes.
Netflix obviously had to cancel this one. Anything absolutely stellar they kill.
Intelligent writing like this should not just be recognized - it should be lauded, cherished, and rewarded with maximum praise. The story walks a religious and cultural line in a way that is astute and significant.
Outer Range (2022)
Just Finished Season 1
I was very pleasantly surprised by the creative almost Fill Noir / Twin Peaks like scenes that randomly get scattered in. So many of the reviews here complained things fell off after the second episode - watch the whole season and see what you think. The S01E07 & S01E08 more than made up for any lack of place in the mid-season.
The fact I couldn't fully guess what was going on really made me love the story. Being able to predict coming events makes me loose interest - NOT THE CASE HERE.
This was genuine dark Sci-Fi with amazing cinematography & a duo of Brokin and Poots that I will not personally be forgetting for some time. Some of these scenes had more legit acting than I have seen anywhere in years - no exaggeration. The fact those talents were abiding a story that was existentially liquid is all that more impressive.
Waiting excitedly for Season 2.
Civil War (2024)
Audiophiles: Best Sound Design since Heat
Cinematography here was extremely impressive. Acting was decent and characters were acceptable. Nothing there had me loosing interest.
The reason people are repeatedly saying the film captivating and kept them in us almost solely the fact Sound Design hasn't been done this well in a very very long time. Every rifle shot, every explosion, every flyover sounds realistic and unique whilst being perfectly layered into the story.
People keep saying see this in IMAX. I would suggest anything like RPX or a Dolby Atmos theater as this was just absolutely impressive work from the sound team.
Those stressing this film doesn't tap into politics whatsoever are %100 correct. The film does a very intelligent dance of only letting you know social conflict has been going on for some time and that the events unfolding have been a long time coming.
Juice (1992)
Perfect Performances
When watching this story the most important element is knowing Epps was the Lightning rod. He was present as the loose protagonist in showing what was actually real enough culture in 1992.
The surreal part of this movie, the under the radar and unappreciated gem, is how the story comes together with such stellar directing whilst still having amazing grounding through cameos, real depictions of what DJ culture was to the scene in 1987 or so into th timeline here of 1992, and then seeing someone who knew all of this in a way that "he was living it" couldn't do enough to describe - Tupac.
In 1992 so much emphasis was put on many young men to "be the hardest" to "excell in ANY WAY, legal or not, to have JUICE. JUICE being WILL itself, Determination, Focus, Impact.
The brilliance here was a script that showed how walking the line of JUICE that's honorable could be so easily darkened by those desperate enough to have it at any cost, with any JUICE. This basically described the push of JUICE by the Gangland mentality, the underbelly of society - The type of JUICE that pushed the 1992 Riots and more.
Schools should teach more of how dangerous it actually was in that time period with Gangs making major inroads with youth in most cities in the US.
This is a gleeming display of what I would teach my American History class if I had one. A solid lesson in social strife in the US 1980s to 1990s.
Ahsoka (2023)
For Rebels Fans - This is Invigorating
Huge Star Wars Fan my whole life. My Dad Saw A New Hope every Wednesday for a month when it came out and we shared a love for Star Wars.
Since the original trilogy only Clone Wars, Rebels, and Rogue One really pressed the seams.
Rebels was genius. Dave Feloni knew what he was doing and created some absolutely amazing characters with great backstories - each developing a background of canon that blew the BS away. The last few episodes of Rebels were amazing, emotional, deep, and amazingly well throught through and delivered.
Feloni is carrying that here. Be patient and watch. BRAVO. Feloni will save Star Wars. There is a reason Lucas has entrusted him with so much. The fact he even tied this to Dathomir and the Night Sisters screams "hold onto your saber - watch this."
