Grantchester (2014)
Truly awful..
For starters, Grantchester isn't really a mystery. It's a 21st century soap opera dressed up as a 1950's period piece. Very little time in the very short hour of the program is actually spent on any mystery or how it's solved. The show revolves around the sordid lives of most of the characters. An alcoholic, chain-smoking, carnal Anglican priest, a cop who cheats on his wife, a wife who cheats on her husband and so on and on. I think the only honest, honorable character is Leonard, the homosexual priest, who takes his vows and commitment to the church seriously and really is a good man. Not a single social justice issue or talking point escapes the writers even though most of what they're lecturing viewers about had nothing to do with how anyone in the 50's lived. They seem to have no idea at all of history. All the characters and especially the Vicar seem to have no problem making excuses for their terrible behavior. Giving in to temptation is just fine because God wants them to be happy. What a sad, ugly, depressing little show.
Undercover Grandpa (2017)
Possibly the dumbest movie I've ever seen..
This may not have been the worst movie I've ever seen because there are so many terrible movies being made anymore but it certainly feels like it. Stupid "plot" with old retired government agent elements swiped from Bruce Willis',"RED"--but MUCH older men, the Robert Duvall old guy/young whippersnapper fight scene from "Second Hand Lions" and what seems to be the now requisite dopey teen love story. And I was once again reminded of what an awful--truly awful--actor James Caan is. Ugh. Can't believe I watched the thing all the way through. Another example of the complete lack of quality and creativity in entertainment anymore.
Midsomer Murders: Blood on the Saddle (2010)
Why all those Confederate flags?
Other reviewers have said everything I would have said about how truly awful and pointless this episode of Midsomer Murders is so I won't beat a dead horse(!). Just to say what a disappointment it was to try to watch such a bad production when Midsomer Murders is usually so top notch--acting, location, stories.
What I'm wondering, as an American, is why the producers of this episode would think that Confederate flags would be flown anywhere--past or present--in the western United States? The Civil War was between the North and South, not the East and West. I've lived in the American west my entire life and the Confederate flag is not a part of it's history or culture. There's not a single one of them to be seen at parade's or rodeo's here.
Jam & Jerusalem (2006)
More Fabulous
I love this program. No, it isn't hilarious. It's touching, gently amusing and interesting. I've watched the entire series many times and every time I see it I'm more impressed with Jennifer Saunders' writing than the time before. I live in a very small US town and I have to say that small town/village life seems to fit a pattern no matter where you live. I recognized some of these women and the way of life.
Some have complained that there are too many characters but I disagree. Each character develops at a nice leisurely pace as the series progresses so that by the end of the Christmas Panto we feel that we know these women quite well--and like them. I hope that this is the first of as many series as the characters can sustain and can hardly wait until Series 2.
