The Power (2023)
why waste such a great idea?
What a waste. Awesome idea. And everything to do with Africa and Saudi Arabia etc is great and interesting, but sadly the series chose not to focus on the liberation of oppressed women, no. It had to focus on following around over privileged teenies. Tunde, Tatiana and Zoia had great stories and great development, but Roxy and Jos just annoyed the life out of me. Allie's story starts off nicely, but once her journey begins she becomes so self absorbed and unlikeable.
I feel like there was just too much potential wasted here. Too bad. This could have been an amazing series, but the annoying teen focus, bad characters and not so great writing kept me from enjoying the series.
The production value on the other hand is amazing.
Sam - A Saxon (2023)
why tell this story?
I kept hearing about the relevance of this story, but no. It is the story of a black man born and raised in Germany who makes one bad decision after another. He is toxic and abusive.
There is sadly nothing positive about the movie or the main role.
He ruins the lives of everybody he touches by being egocentric and self consumed.
He grows up without a father so he is never there for his son. He longs for a connection and a sense of belonging, but everybody who wants to connect with him he then pushed away, because well, he doesn't know how to treat people. He lashes out and hurts other people physically because he has been physically hurt.
He says he is fighting for his "fatherland" (Germany) and calls it his home, but in the same breath is fighting to change it completely, because he says it isn't a home for someone like him.
So what is the series trying to say?
That being a violent person and criminal in Germany is only natural if you have a different cultural background, because Germany will never treat you the way they treat Germans?
Sorry, but that is a horrible message.
Most the actors aren't good.
The grading and camera work is very German standard and just doesn't look any better than every series on German television, so I'm not even giving a star bonus for that.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
couple of plot holes
Maybe I'm just dumb, but can somebody please explain to me why the whole water tribe went out to get the daughter, then while they were actually winning their assault, they all just disappeared or turned back without even as much as a somebody screaming out "retreat", before they got the daughter back? It's crazy, but the water was full of them and then boom. They were just gone. This movie had 3 occasions just like this where things stopped making sense to me, but whatever. Looking past that and annoying kids with cheesy dialogues, the movie is good though. The overall story is interesting and the movie keeps you entertained. I think everybody agrees on the fact that the movie would work just as well if it was an hour shorter, but you hardly get bored on a first watch, even though it is so long.
