The Calling (2022)
What is this?
I couldn't get through two episodes. The acting is miserable. The lead character and his "gift" just seemed gimicky and silly. The fun thing about police procedurals is the cases - the police solve a case that keeps the viewer guessing. The police are background for the most part. This is not your typical procedural. The main character and his "gift" are the focus of the show. I was excited when I saw Barry Levinson was a producer but for me, this is a complete miss. I'm surprised at the high ratings but I guess there is something out there for everyone and that's a good thing. I'm just stuck on the lead character's silly mysical gift of connecting with victims- too much drama and not enough good realistic police work and that just ruins it for me.
Waco: American Apocalypse (2023)
Review the Film....
So many of these reviews are opinions of the events. Rate the quality of the film. I agree there will always be bias but if you reject the assumptions of the filmmakers - tell the reader why.. Dig a litter deeper with factual information. I enjoyed the doc for its access to source material - especially the interviews. The current era interviews, were to me what made this a good (and unique) documentary on what happened at Waco. Their stories now - so many years later - are enhanced by their aged perspectives and are compelling to hear. This was a tragedy on so many levels. My personal feelings about who are to blame are not compatible with the lens of the filmmaker. However, I appreciated this film and felt it was an important perspective worth viewing.
The Conners (2018)
Best Sitcom on Network TV
Hands down, the bet sitcom on network tv. The producers, actors, crew, sponsors, took a huge chance on this show after Rosanne obliterated her career. I absolutely love this show. This show is about the performances of great character actors and comedians. This is the only show I come back to network tv for.
John Goodman - better than ever - I didn't think he'd come back and continue the story of the Connors but I'm glad he did - this is an actor who has had a long film career and network tv is lucky to have him - (but the viewers are luckier)
Laurie Metcalf - better than ever - every decade I say "Laurie Metcalf is in her prime" - because she just gets sharper and sharper as a comedic actress
Kathy Sagal - I wish they could afford her full time!
Sara Gilbert - I love the way Darlene's always at the ready with the one-liners - and she's really funny! AND I know she was instrumental in getting this show off the ground.
Alicia Goranson - I think Becky is my favorite character of all and Alicia Goranson is a natural in this role.
The writers - Without great writers, there is no show. These writers are tight. The timing and pace are spot on which is especially important when presenting some of the serious topics this comedy tackles. So kudos to the writers.
Not sure why all the haters.
Hoarder House Flippers (2022)
The Elephant in the Room
This is for episode one - Clearly, the more interesting story here is WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PEOPLE IN THE HOUSE? Just bizarre. A whole life walked away from. It was hard for me to get excited about this adorable couple flipping this house knowing the history was probably a painful one for someone(s). Something clearly went wrong in the previous owner's lives years ago and the fully furnished house was abandoned at that time. Everything remains - clothes, food, mementos, a packed garage and basement. Where did they go? The cute couple who host the show are entertaining and like-able but the content isn't original. If you love the home renovation shows, this one will work for you.
