The Last of Us (2023)
Incredible so far...
For whatever reason I didn't expect much from this show and wasn't really hyped for it. Even as a massive fan of the first game, I assumed the adaptation would fall flat. But I was wrong as wrong can be!
To start of with, the cast is amazing! Pedro Pascal is the perfect Joel, just as I envisioned him when I played the game. Bella Ramsey is doing great as Ellie, she IS Ellie. The world, the set and cinematography is so spot on!
This show is off to a great start and it's one I'm more than happy to pay a subscription to watch. I can't say that about most other shows these days unfortunately. I can't wait to watch this series unfold!
Devotion (2022)
Wonderful Story, Boring Movie
The book is excellent and the story and the heroism by Ensign Jesse Brown (and his wingman) is remarkable. This movie is just poorly written and executed, even by today's Hollywood standards, which unfortunately are extremely low (we don't have the noteworthy blockbusters of the past).
This movie could've done with a proper director and writing staff, a proper story line. Absolutely nothing happens in the first part of the movie, the last half picks up and for that I'm giving it a solid 6.
The main cast is great with Jonathan Majors and Glenn Powell, they're chemistry was natural and authentic. Especially considering that Ensign Jesse Brown, in real life, was known for not socializing much even though he had a strong bond with his flight unit. Jesse Brown preferred to spend every minute possible with his family, this wasn't captured in the movie. Also, Jesse Brown's journey to becoming a naval aviator in the 40s is very important but completely left out of the movie.
All of this to say, you can tell the film was rushed and efforts missed, but still an important film as I believe as a history buff more people show know what Jesse Brown did for America and his contributions to the Korean War as well breaking barriers.
I Know This Much Is True (2020)
Utterly Flawless...
Good shows like this one rarely come along anymore. The pacing with six episodes was just right, neither too nor too long. The writing and the story itself was exceptional, coupled with the incredible acting and chemistry is what made this one special.
Mark Ruffalo's skill as an actor is underrated. He was abs phenomenal in this one that you quickly lose sight of the fact that that it's one guy playing the two brothers (twins). Hopefully he got paid double because he pulled it off amazingly. The rest of the cast was great to.
This is one story that is sure to break your heart and make you smile.
Philadelphia (1993)
Powerful.
I was a senior in HS when this film dropped & saw it with my girlfriend at the theater within its first couple of weeks of release. Aside from the cast I remember being drawn to see the film by Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia, which was a huge hit at the time. I saw it again years later and then just recently watched it twice since I came across it on Prime.
I'm of the opinion that the 90s was the best era for movies. Perhaps it's because I came of age during that time. Philadelphia just reaffirmed my opinion because it's an incredible movie and in ways it was ahead of its own time.
I think the cinematography for a dramatic movie and one from the 90s was done really well, and you felt the life of the city of Philadelphia. Anyway, this movie conveyed a few messages... centered around HIV/AIDS, homophobia, change. Referring to Denzel's character and his eventual acceptance. I feel the movie did a phenomenal job with these messages all centered around a compelling story, excellent writing and of course the acting. Especially the chemistry between Hanks and Washington. And of the music really is perfect, not just Springsteen's song, but also Neil Young's at the end. The ending is both beautiful and sad, but Young's song really causes the tears to flow at the end.
Tom Hanks earned his Oscar for his performance and I have to give this a 10/10 because the movie is wonderful and it's aged very well in my opinion.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Top Gun Experience... Delivered!
I've been referring to IMDB reviews for years but had to create an account just to write something myself for Top Gun Maverick!
The movie is absolutely amazing, it delivered in all the right categories - nostalgia, cinematography, writing, storyline & of course, the cast! The cast & their chemistry was beautiful.
There's a great piece at the very beginning that is very familiar & a real treat for all Top Gun fans. I was literally on the edge of my seat from the scene 1 to when the credits rolled. It's that good & it was very refreshing. The jets, the technology today & how they shot the sequences were amazing & felt very real.
This movie is a perfect 10/10 in every way. It's apolitical & there is no signaling at all, which unfortunately has become rare in movies/Hollywood these days. So it was nice to escape reality for a while & enjoy a great movie, a follow-up to a very dear film from the wonderful era of the 80s! Enjoy!
