Hannibal (2013)
The Good Die Young
It's a sad commentary on people that you can rest assured if there is a show that last for a very long time it is most likely bland and not to deep. It happens all to often where a smart and unique tv show is cancelled after a couple seasons. Every other show it seems now a days is either a medical drama or a police drama, Hannibal, while they are dealing with solving crimes isn't close to your run off the mill cop show. It is as visually stunning as it is deep and dark. The imagination behind the different crimes is jaw dropping. I am not sure many people could ever come up with the array of methods of killing in this show. Although he has played characters who weren't the villain Mads Mikkelson just seems made for the role of the "bad guy". He really made Hannibal his own. It would have been very easy for the creators to go with an actor and character more closely resembling Anthony Hopkins famous portrayal of Hannibal in the movie, but they and Mikkelson made it his own and unique.
Just another wonderful show brought down in it's prime while shows like Grey's Anatomy keep trucking along with the same stuff, heading into season when the show hasn't been good since season (Although I will admit the first 4 or so seasons of Grey's Anatomy were historically good and some of the best tv ever).
Lie to Me (2009)
As Good As It Was Unique
I will never understand why quality is so often not rewarded in tv now a days. Good shows like this have a fairly short run while other lesser shows keep chugging along. Greys Anatomy for instance. Now don't get me wrong The first 4 seasons were pretty much TV perfection and few shows have 4 seasons that measure up to those 4 seasons but after that it went downhill fast and its still dragging on. But nevertheless the point of this review was about this show and yes this show is great, the last season not on par with the rest but still better than 90% of the dribble out there. The relationship between the 2 main characters is captivating. They have a ton of chemistry without falling into the trap shows so often fall into of leading to a romantic relationship. Not every male and female character that partner up need to become an item.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Perfect
This show is a gem. How one show can take a period in time that has been used so often in tv yet make it be so unique and interesting is pretty incredible. There are great shows and then there are GREAT SHOWS. This is the latter. The writing, acting and pace make for a show you can't stop watching. On my third time through S01-S05 right now.
The relationship between Uhtred and King Alfred is awe inspiring. I also love how this series shows the hypocrisy of Christianity and how even then if you don't believe what they do or find the whole thing silly then you are wrong and doomed and only they are doing the right thing. For in this series the most honorable and best man is not one.
Quick Draw (2013)
It never fails!
Somehow a show this great with so much going for it gets cancelled after 2 seasons yet ridiculously horrible shows like 2 Broke Girls and Mom were running strong. Not to mention shows like Greys Anatomy which has been puttering along for an extra 15 seasons after the last season it was actually good. It's a shame, the brilliant acting and wit make what should be a top show yet it really never was even given a chance.
Shoresy (2022)
Letterkenny is the show that keeps on giving.
I could have never dreamed the hilarious Shoresy from Letterkenny would be spin-off lead character material, but luckily Jared did. The hilarious, horrible things his Shoresy character spits out are amazing. Like the original I hope this stays around for a long time.
Oh yeah, PS: "Give your balls a tug"!
Downton Abbey (2010)
Really shouldn't be so good.
Some shows just have "it". I don't exactly know what "it" is but when they do you know it. Normally shows with this many characters take awhile to get into, understand and enjoy, but this show does a great job of setting you up to understand. For the most part the characters/actors seem well casted and do a really good job. Even the over the top accent and voice of Maggie Smith as Violet grows on you. With one exception...Elizabeth McGovern (Cora). Her acting is TERRIBLE. I can't remember if I've seen her in something else and I know she must have been in many other things but it seems like it's her first day on the job. For such a good show overall it's distracting how monotone and slow she is. Void of any emotion. Someone could tell me I was watching the final read-through or rehearsal and based on her I would believe them.
Ok sorry there is one more thing that lowered my rating and that is the fact that it feels like we're supposed to accept and believe Mary Is the prettiest sister with the most to offer. It's a big stretch.
