Eileen (2023)
If it's free, worth watching
I almost paid to rent this, but waited and it was free on Hulu. Glad I did! Let me start saying I love the cast. They are top notch. This is probably a case of a poorly constructed story. I got the impression it was confused on what it should be. I coming of age? I thriller? What are you, Eileen? I watched the whole thing hoping to find out. Just know that you'll come away with questions and mild disappointment. The lead actresses make it worth spending two hours, which speaks to their talent. And the direction was almost, but not. I enjoyed the set design and period costumes. Wait till it's free, that's my advice.
Fingernails (2023)
Great cast, falls flat
I really, really like the main actors so gave this a go. I'm a fan of indie films and held high hopes. It's gruelingly painful to watch on many levels--to the point of macabre, but not in a good way like Hitchcock, Coen Brothers or David Lynch. The story line is strange, weak and slow and doesn't improve. I held out hope until the final credits and was disappointed. Even if you love the cast, I would recommend a pass on this one.
The choreography and cinematography is beautiful, it's just unfortunate it was wasted on such a poorly executed script and narrative. Also, the relationships between characters is stilted. Maybe that's the point, but it's uncomfortable to watch.
Master (2022)
Slow boil, scary, well done
The story line and characters are very well constructed. Acting is on point. It keeps building and building, like a Hitchcock film. It's terrifying in a hyper-real sort of way. I'm thankful to Jordan Peele for breaking open this door and forging a path for others to follow regarding race in America. It's high time we hear from Black creators and authentic voices.
The Card Counter (2021)
A Masterpiece
Everything about this film is pitch perfect and brilliant, from the writing, directing, acting, scene production. It is top notch. While watching I realized how long it had been since I'd seen a truly EXCELLENT film. WOW.
Doubting Thomas (2018)
Well worth watching
I'm not sure why viewers are giving this film such low marks. I found the premise very interesting, and the character development well thought out. The acting was great too. I started to watch it on a whim and glad I took the chance. If you are looking for good indie drama check it out.
