The Lincoln Lawyer (2022)
Finally....Netflix buys into a decent TV franchise
Netflix has been struggling with TV and film consistency recently and I'm really happy that CBS (it's original network home) turned it down and Netflix took it on, at 45 - 55 minutes it's not attempting to fill the hour like the streamers other efforts and you can tell it has a decent and proven showrunner behind it because it's consistent and it's storylines develop (another issue Netflix has problems with)
I think some of the snobby Netflix viewers didn't like the mass appeal of this show (remember it was originally developed for a mass audience on network TV) and preferred the complex niche show that only a few viewers actually understand (is that a Netflix user thing?)
Overall (you can't argue with the numbers) you can see why this is a hit, it just works, classic courtroom drama, well formatted, written to bring you back every week (or back to back now) with consistent leads and supporting casts - some may argue that it's not strong enough or it's writing and dialogue are lazy, then again other CBS hits like CSI and NCIS went for 15 seasons with high viewing figures, it may not have the cult or coolness of a "Netflix" shows but then again, it will outlast them.
I cannot wait for next few seasons to see how they develop it, more of this please!
Ron's Gone Wrong (2021)
Fun ride of a movie, great for kids, misunderstood by adults
I really enjoyed the film, absolutely a fun ride from beginning to end, very similar to The Mitchells Vs The Machines and also some references back to the 80s with Short Circuit (with even some material lifted from that film)
What has puzzled but also entertained me me is some of the adults or boomers trying to get their head around their concept of the film on here and claiming it's copying Disney or it's out of touch with it's audience - when they are!
Some of the younger guys and girls I know loved it! They understood all the references which I even missed and they are the "target" audience - and the story it tells about connecting to the younger generation was maybe a "moral" too far the boomers on this website. But for the parents that are up for this difficult lesson, take your kids, tweens and young adults a like, a great one for all the family especially around the holidays!
The Movies That Made Us (2019)
A very clever way to reveal what goes on behind the movie!
Having read a lot of reviews already, commenting on the furiously fast editing, the jokey dialogue (superbly voiced by Danny Wallace from Season 2 onwards) and sound effects makes "what would be" a boring movie documentary into something that keeps your interest.
For the people that are putting down the style of the show, go out and buy the DVD/Blu-Ray and watch the behind the scenes that way, this is behind the scenes for a modern era and generation and it's I love the way it keeps your attention - I don't think it would be a three season success if it wasn't working.
If you want to sit-back, relax and delve into some juicy trivia from classic and cult films, then watch this, can't wait for Season 4.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Oversold and Underexecuted.....
Disney+ put together some awesome trailers, some great cast interviews and good background material. The series starts with a bang, but fizzles out very quickly to a slow, boring and almost snail pace and I felt like I was watching so much setup, fan service and nostalgia that Disney+ forgot to make a TV series. This seems to be a problem with Disney+ series which include Wandavision or The Mandolorian, they're so busy hyping up the lore, canon for avid comic / book fans they forget their casual viewers lose out. This is why reviews seem to be divided, hardcore fans love it, casual viewers are like - meh! I feel other streaming networks are nailing the TV formula - maybe why that's why Star was introduced because they needed good 'already proven' TV franchises on the platform. .....this really needs to change, you can't use your properties like this, they'll need a good 'all-rounder' (that serves everyone!) film / TV show soon or else they'll be losing subscribers.
The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two (2020)
Had the potential to be amazing.....but just missed the mark
The Christmas Chronicles was always going to be hard to follow and I can see where the team behind this sequel wanted to go with it but I just feel it hits the right notes on some fronts and misfires on others.
The main positive continues to be Kurt Russell as Santa and his chemistry with Darby Camp as Katie, you can see they love working together, they tried to expand on this by bringing in new characters that just didn't hit right if you were watching.
I feel the elves are great in the first one, they're fun, have a touch of mischief about them and of course they're cute, and I keep asking myself "I know you're there" but still felt their absence in the entire film.
The whole movie felt more like a kids Christmas movie with a very different message than the first one and this caused confusion as it seemed to go back and forth a few times, so it missed with the overall theme.
Many other points introduced in this film feel rushed or like a good idea at the time but they have to rush it to a conclusion or forget about it, which leaves the audience wondering what the heck is going on.
It's watchable, a fun Christmas film for all the family but don't expect it to be as memorable as the first.
Like most Netflix Originals I really need them to get their storytelling in place and stop looking at stats if they're to make the move into the next league of movie-making.
So many originals seems to have so much promise but are let down by poor story telling or setup....then again if their secretive raw data says otherwise maybe it's a theme we all need to accept.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Starting to lose it's spark......
I'm reviewing this as a casual television watcher than doesn't follow all the Star Wars series, canon, books and characters and I'm judging this from a TV watchers point of view.
Season 1 was well paced, set up stories well, and seemed to move quickly in quick week to week format, all episodes were different and engaging and told enough story to keep me hooked to the series, as I started Season 2, the episodes seems to drag with poorer story telling, flatter more disposable episodes but if you're a Star Wars film, all I read about are amazing reveals for fans of the "franchise" which is great but I don't follow everything.
For hardcore fans you're going to be served but for us casual watchers I fear we'll start to lose the story and it will become a niche program that no one will understand if you can't match up the connections.
I appreciate all the hard work that goes into the show and the realism it portrays and it's beautifully put together but what truly holds any show together is the stories that stretch over one episodes to many and I feel is straying away from it's original premise as it tries to cram so much in the passionate fanbase.
The Game Changers (2018)
An entertaining film, but please question it's bias and agenda
I watched the film and for all it's slickness and hollywood budget, after every sequence I found myself researching the evidence the film was claiming and was shocked that as much as the film can be correct, it can also be wrong.
I don't have an agenda against veganism or being an omnivore (people who choose meat and plant based diet) and I'm fine with people choosing a plant-based diet, but I think it's important to ask questions about the people chosen to participate in the film and the agendas they have and how the edit has been skewed to convince people into thinking that they should do this, when they haven't been asking the questions.
I'm aware this review will upset people and I'll get jumped on for calling out the truth but I recommend anyone to go out and do the research after they've watched the film to see if it matches up to what you've seen.
