Argylle (2024)
A silly spy movie
When I saw the trailer, it felt very similar to The Lost City(2022), but it's not the same. Both follow a similar story of books and real life, but in Argylle, the events in the book have happened and are happening now, which I gotta say is a unique thing I have not seen before.
Sam Rockwell did a brilliant job, absolutely loved him, he brought a lot of life to the character and is not annoying. His role is important even though he is not Argylle He was an integral part of the story and not just a useless side character used to make the main character important.
The train scene was shot quite well, constantly showing Sam Rockwell and Henry Cavill gave me a good sense of what was going on through Elly's head. Her reactions to the whole thing felt plausible. Despite being under attack, she did not freak out and pass out; instead, she acted rational while being careful of Sam Rockwell as she didn't know who he was, which did help in showing how smart she is.
All the twists and turns in the movie were interesting. The only twist I had an issue with is the death of Keira. I mean if someone shoot a bullet perfectly at a certain angle and at a specific area near the heart such that you don't die, It felt like very weak plot armour as it wasn't explained properly and just seems ridiculous. The story of trying to retrieve the files that will expose the bad guy is not bad as it does not draw main focus from Elly and her story. The whole travelling to the secret keeper to get the master-key felt pointless and did not have the effect of wowing or be a thrill. It was just boring.
The characters are interesting and the slow reveal of who they really are like Bryan Cranston and Catherin O'hara. I did not see this coming but just before the reveal with all the suspenseful music I kind of felt it coming but it was still a good reveal.
The issue I had with this movie is by the end it all got messy and it felt very rushed. The revealing of the real agent Argylle with Henry Cavill and then going back in time to show young Agent Argylle and integrating it with the Kingsman universe felt not needed. Reason being it poses the question that if these two are in the same universe then how does Sam Jackson work in it as he was in the Kingsman movie as a villain but in this movie he is the good guy. The end, instead of tying loose ends, leaves us with plot holes and questions.
There was absolutely no need to integrate the movies and a making cinematic universe. Without it the movie does stand a chance of being a good standalone Matthew Vaughn movie. His cinematography and crazy technology and crazy sets are something I find entertaining despite there being glaring potholes and plot armour in movie like Kingsman 2 which was good to see but when you think about the movie your rating would go down and down.
Hopefully his next movie which is Kingsman 3 i believe will be better and not have plot-holes but still have crazy tech and cinematography.
To conclude the movie is watchable, it has good action and good acting along with fancy sets and the cute cat Alfie which is why I would recommend it, just don't think about it too much afterwards because you might feel like you wasted time.
Lift (2024)
How not to make a heist movie.
When I think of good heist movies, I think of Ocean's 8, 11, 13, The Italian Job. What I will not think of is Lift (2024). This movie is now added to the list of failed original movies made by Netflix. My honest thought is, who the heck green lit the movie without properly reading the script? When I watch bad movies, I sometimes wonder if the whole production was like, "it's a good movie, let's make it." Since it is a heist movie, I can let go a little bit regarding technology, but the lack of common sense is astonishing. Let's get into the details.
The opening sequence is Cyrus bidding for an NFT so that he can later inflate its price at an auction. It is very bland in taste for what qualifies as a heist. It does not make the viewer feel like it's a heist movie. An issue is the NFTs have become a method of scamming people IRL, so the whole sequence of them kidnapping the creator so that the price increases and they sell it does not make them masterminds and great thieves. Thirteen-year-old kids can do this sitting in their parents' garage. While they do show that other members of their group are stealing priceless art in London, it also becomes bland as they steal it only to fund the NFT. During this sequence, there is also a boat chase sequence, and for some reason, Cyrus keeps looking back and smiling at Abby, which is annoying. The opening scene should have established their credibility as real thieves and not small-town robbers, but it fails to do so terribly.
The following sequence is of Abby telling Cyrus that she has caught them and can send them to jail, but there is nothing shown that makes that statement credible, so it makes Cyrus and his team look dumb for overlooking something. Up until the part where they execute the plan is very boring. Kevin Hart is trying very hard to not be funny. He is trying to be serious which does not suit him. Maybe he was trying to change how he is seen, but it has failed. He is a comedy actor and should lean into the comedy part.
The whole plane robbery sequence was quite good; it had a good amount of action and was a thrill to watch. The stealing of the gold, the fake moaning to throw off the enemy was funny. This part felt like a heist movie which is my only plus point for this movie.
The rest of the film goes downhill. The dialogues feel very forced, random lines that have no connection, the lack of humour or a stand out character. The acting is decent but not strong enough to make this movie watchable.
I'm gonna stop writing because the movie is truly boring and not worth discussing anymore. If you want to watch a good heist movie, go watch Ocean's 8, 11, 13, The Italian Job, Focus, Baby Driver, Inception, Now You See Me 1 & 2. Do not watch Lift (2024); it's boring af.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
A perfect screw you.
The movie is an absolutely gripping thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. The story and characters were absolutely brilliant, and the acting was on point.
The movie follows a dual narrative. The first one is of Susan Morrow (Amy Adams), who receives a book written by her ex-husband Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal) that is disturbing in nature, leading to her questioning her personal choices and her life. The second narrative is the story of the book that follows Tony Hastings (also played by Jake Gyllenhaal) after a dark incident occurs when he and his family are traveling.
The starting scene of the movie is quite colorful, and I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean.
The movie does a wonderful job of staying consistent. Nowhere does the plot feel slow or does it feel that the story is diverging. The movie keeps you engaged by going back and forth between the book and real life.
The cinematography, background music, and color grading do a very good job of bringing the thrilling aspect to the movie. The scenes of Susan reading the book and her getting shocked during certain parts are very similar to how a person in real life reads a book. Amy Adams has again done a wonderful acting job.
I would like to appreciate Michael Shannon and his role. The way he played the detective felt really honest, and even though it was not his family that was killed, the dedication that he had to the case and the need to get justice done was very well written. Aaron Taylor-Johnson also acted very well, his character was very creepy but only when at times he decided he was "better" than Tony making him a sadistic monster.
Watching the highway scene made me feel so uneasy that I had to remind myself that it is fiction, but the creepiness of the scene is easily one of the most disturbing things I have seen. Mind you, I have seen the Hannibal TV show (2013-2015), and I didn't flinch or feel uneasy at all during the gory scenes.
The scenes where Susan closed the book or dropped the book and let out a sigh was a good plot device that allowed the viewer to take a moment and just let what happened wash over.
There were some reviews online criticizing that Tony did not carry a gun even though he is from Texas. The way I see it is that Edward wrote about himself of what Susan thought of him, that he is a weak man. From the flashback scenes of them being together and Susan's mother Annie (Laura Linney) heavily criticizing Edward, it is clear that Edward is a soft, caring guy. Which is how we see Tony throughout the movie, He struggles to protect his family from the gang and hesitates on getting revenge for their deaths. Edward wrote about himself to prove he is not weak. Another thing that I theorize is that when Tony (Edward) shoots his stomach and eventually dies, it meant the death of the weak and nice guy that Susan knew.
The ending of her being all alone was something that took me a while to understand, so here is how I see it:
After Susan cheated on Edward and left him for Hutton Morrow (Arnie Hammer) and also aborted their child, Edward is devastated and wants revenge for the pain she caused. By sending the book, agreeing to meet with her but not showing up, it actually caused more damage to her than he wanted.
The reason being Edward probably just sent her the book to show that writing about himself is the best he could write. Susan, who learns that her husband is cheating on her and not a lot of people like her, when Edward reaches out her spirit of hope ignites but that gets crushed when he does not show up.
There is a line from a review by Film Colossus that is " I'm going to take away every last bit of hope you have and leave you with absolutely nothing so that life has no meaning to you whatsoever, screw you. " which I think perfectly summarizes the ending.
The film was a beautiful thriller with dark and eerie moments. A must-watch for all the thriller fans out in the world.
Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
A movie that is pure truth and sorrow.
Wow, the movie is full of raw emotion and pain, it's difficult to describe how good this movie is.
Nicolas Cage, who plays Ben, and Elisabeth Shue, who plays Sera, were absolutely phenomenal. I'm devastated that Elisabeth did not win an Oscar for this role, she was absolutely phenomenal. Her character is full of trauma and pain and she does a wonderful job of portraying it. Nicolas Cage was just pure pain and sadness. It is never revealed why he drinks, but seeing him in a "happy" state when drunk makes you think, 'maybe that's why he's drunk,' to remain in the high.
The story and the ending are so soul-crushing. The effects of alcoholism on a person's life are portrayed so well here. Generally, in movies and TV shows, when it is shown someone has alcohol issues, they are still able to become a perfect person in the morning and go to work, which feels fake. This movie is the best representation of it by showing how it impacts your thinking, your life, your relationships, showing how you cannot live without it and yearn every second for it when you don't have it.
Throughout the movie, Sera is trying to help Ben because I believe she sees someone who does not judge her the way others do.
The movie does not have a happy ending or anything happy in it. The movie does not bring you any sense of hope, and it's a good thing. Often in life, we think that good things will eventually happen, but it's not always that way. Some people are destined to be alone, some are destined to be sad.
The movies realism is what makes it sad and hard to watch.
The movie does an excellent job of not beating around the bush and just admits that life is hard. The story is just depressing and will leave a mark on someone who watches it.
The end of Ben drinking till he dies and Sera talking to her therapist and hopefully leaving Las Vegas brings some sense of relief to me as they both got what they wanted.
In the end, we are in control of our lives. Surprisingly, after seeing the movie, I was washed over with a sense of sorrow and unhappiness in my life, and I felt the need to make it better. I've never had any issues so far regarding drinking or abuse, but seeing what Ben and Sera went through is heartbreaking and depressing, as there truly are people in the world going through these tough situations and often have no one around.
Life (2017)
A good twist to a classic alien movie.
I thought the movie would be a casual sci-fi movie where they run into some technical issues on the space station, like Gravity (2013), or a meteor is headed to Earth and will destroy all life and the space station has to stop it. Even when the miniature version of the alien was shown, I thought it would be a peaceful event for them to do some science stuff and discover new things.
What I did not expect is for this to turn into a full Alien (1979). Holy smokes, it became an absolute horror movie after the alien (named Calvin) absolutely murdered Rory in the most gory way. The blood floating in zero gravity and coming out from everywhere was a shock. From here, the whole movie became a proper horror movie. The death of Kat was also quite horrifying. She drowned in her space suit outside the space station, so her body floats in space forever.
The story is quite exciting and engaging. Since there is a threat for most of the runtime and a hostile alien running around, the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Plot-wise, there is nothing that seems weird.
The acting by the entire cast is excellent, and the writing is on point. The dialogues makes sense and doesn't feel out of pocket.
The fact that Calvin killed four astronauts and is with another one means the Xenomorph has some competition LOL.
Calvin's design is quite unique, and he becomes even scarier every time he becomes bigger. The choice for him to have a face is quite genius and makes him even more terrifying.
The ending, where David and Miranda decide to take two escape pods and one of them will have Calvin. That pod will be launched into deep space, while the other will return to Earth and report honestly, looked like a good and sad ending. David had been in space for over a year and started missing Earth, and now, to have to spend the rest of his life floating in space with an alien is just sad. But the twist that David reached Earth with Calvin, and Miranda is now floating in space forever, was absolutely bonkers.
I saw from reviews online that typical horror movies have the humans winning, but this one flipped the script, making it a much better movie.
As far as the crew's choices go, in high-tense situations, anyone can crack. No amount of training can prepare you for the unknown. This is why I believe they did anything they could and did not hold back.
One thing that bugged me is that there is no indication that Calvin has a heat signature or is a hot-blooded animal, so the thruster scene where they are looking for a temperature change wouldn't work. But staring at the meters and seeing which will change next was still thrilling. Which is why i'll let this slide.
Overall, the movie is an excellent horror sci-fi movie that, once you accept it's similar to Alien (1979), you can watch it without comparing it and enjoy or be frightened by it. It's a must-watch for all the sci-fi and horror fans.
Drishyam (2015)
A very good Bollywood thriller.
The movie follows Vijay (Ajay Devgn) as he covers up a murder of an IG Meera Deshmukh (Tabu).
The movie had a very good mystery aspect to it. The issue with some mystery movies is that the viewer can predict what happens usually around half the time. This movie turns the tables and shows the aftermath of committing the crime and how far one will go to save themselves.
The length they show Vijay going to create alibis is absolutely crazy. I did not expect that at all. The whole reveal of how he made the alibis and also how he unknowingly coerced his friends to support his alibi is very devious and smart. The script was very good in not revealing the thought process of Vijay earlier, as it would have made it seem that anyone can do such a thing. The way he was able to fool the police and make it seem like they had a grudge, making them question their own opinions and tricking them into believing his version is honestly great writing and amazing gaslighting.
The acting from all the cast is absolutely brilliant. Each of them was unique and an emotional connection could be formed with each of the characters whether it is hatred or sorrow. For example with Vijay you could understand that he had do what was best for his family. For Meera in the beginning I was able to see her perspective and feel bad for her as she lost a son, but that eventually went away when she went with police brutality to get the answers.
The writing for them is on point and very well executed.
The scenes where the Vijay and his family had to talk to the police and stick to their story is flawless, they each lie in a way that makes sense.
Initially, I thought there was a huge plot hole with Vijay's dates and said activities not matching up. But when it was revealed or, should I say, unraveld by Meera, I was stunned and wowed. The dedication and the will to do something like that is crazy, and honestly, I can't even call him the bad guy. The man is street smart and even more. The police really underestimated him. The reveal at the end of him burying the remains under the police station is absolutely crazy.
There was a supposed plot hole that since Vijay and his family went to hotels and restaurants, their CCTV camera footage could have proved their guilt earlier. The way I see it is that CCTV quality is generally not 4K or even 1080P, they are grainy, and some companies even delete the footage after a day or even weeks as data storage costs are high. I choose to believe in this theory. As far as the bank CCTV goes, that makes sense, as banks need to maintain high security and detail, and therefore they are most likely to forever store the footage.
I am aware that this adapted from a book called "The Devotion of Suspect X" written by Keigo Higashino and the Malayalam movie Drishyam (2013), which is why I want to give them a special mention as it is important to recognize these versions too as they are great works of art.
To conclude, this movie is a very good Drama/Thriller and a must-watch. The one I saw is made in Hindi, but it does not matter, put on the subtitles and have your mind blown away.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Disturbingly thrilling to watch.
The movie follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) as he investigates the disappearance of industrialist Henrik Vanger's (Christopher Plummer) niece Harriet, 40 years ago.
The movie is quite dark and disturbing most of the time, but the tone of a dark mystery still stays constant throughout. Daniel Craig acted quite well, in my opinion. I noticed this was filmed during the time period of his James Bond films, and I'm glad that he did not show any part of Bond in the movie. His mannerisms, the way he talks is very different, and it is quite good. Rooney Mara, who plays Lisbeth Salander, was also very good her acting was very good. The character stayed quite consistent throughout, maintaining a gloomy, dark vibe.
The opening credits and the music is actually quite good, the ink and the dark theme was a perfect fit.
The beginning of the story is quite boring, and I found it difficult to watch. Once the story of Lisbeth started to hit the fan, I got hooked. While Lisbeth and Mikael don't meet until after an hour in the movie, the story still stays interesting with Mikael investigating and finding a lot about the murders that have happened. The scenes of them looking at evidence and finding evidence are quite thrilling. You don't start to think who the killer is but are eager to find out which helps in preventing theorizing. The entire story is very interesting and definitely can be called a thriller.
The reveal that Anita Vanger (Joely Richardson) is actually Harriet, I did not see that coming. The scenes of them connecting the murders and the and quotes was quite exciting to watch.
At the end, when the killers and the rapists are revealed, it feels very anticlimactic. I mean there were no hints that Martin Vanger (Stellan Skarsgård) is one of the killer/rapist who took after his father died. The father Gottfried is a suspect who is actually the other killer/rapist, has scenes of connecting the dots that he is the one. They (Gottfried and Martin) not only do this a lot of girls but even the sister/daughter which makes them much worse than monsters. They could've maybe shown some more scenes with Martin maybe trying to cover something up or maybe saying things out of context that could've hinted he is the killer/rapist. One thing I would say is that the things they did is quite gory and even sadistic.
The ending of Mikael still being with his other lover and technically leaving Lisbeth alone was not needed, I believe. They could have just shown her leaving it at his house and ending the film there.
One thing that bothered me was the family tree. Whenever the family was being interviewed or the family was being discussed, I got very confused as to who is related to who. They could have done a better job making sure they explicitly said who is connected to whom when Henrik is explaining to Mikael. They could've also made Mikael's murder board in a family tree that would've helped.
Another thing is that they show Lisbeth getting all the money, but then they end up showing her back in the same old place where she lives. Maybe they could've shown her rich in some other country, enjoying life, and leaving her past behind.
Overall, the movie definitely has a good dark-mystery and thriller aspect to it. It is a good one-time watch in my opinion, but it's definitely worth watching.
Enola Holmes (2020)
The movie has ambition, but it lacks proper execution.
The movie follows Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) as she sets out to find her mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter) after she disappears. Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin) Holmes are also in the movie.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, I've seen the Sherlock (BBC) show, The RDJ movies, and even some of the Elementary episodes. Each rendition of the characters across the adaptations is unique.
The movie is a good entertainer. Enola is quite a charming and funny girl who is rebelling against standard societal norms, which is good to see. She is an absolute joy to watch. Millie Bobby Brown has done a wonderful job of making the character unique and charming.
The fourth-wall breaks are absolutely perfect, the usage of them to show her thought process brings the storytelling aspect to another level. The wall breaks are also good in keeping the audience engaged.
Another thing that is good is the mystery is not overly complicated, and the clues that are given can be solved by anyone, including the audience. They don't make it seem like Enola is a mastermind who can solve the most complex puzzles. Instead, by making her street smart and book smart, and not having a lot of ego, she becomes much more grounded and relatable to a certain level. Another good thing they did is not dumb down Sherlock, he is also smart and capable.
I will say that Sherlock is more caring and sympathetic towards Enola in small ways. He doesn't show it much, but the body language by Henry Cavill expresses the feelings well. Would love to see more of his version of Sherlock.
The time setting of it around late 1800's was good, it had a modern aspect to it but not too modern nor too ancient. The cinematography and sound was well done.
Plot-wise, the story kept building up but it all led to essentially nothing.
The Eudoria running away storyline became a bore because the reason that she ran away ended up being for nothing. I mean, she ran away to bomb places in London and change society but failed. From the stories by Enola about her personality and characteristics, the ending didn't fit well.
The Tewksbury storyline became kind of predictable when they decided to go confront the killer, as obviously they are not going to kill her. The romance between them was there, but they didn't lean into it too much which was good. The story needed to be about Enola, and her actually understanding the pros and cons of the romance makes her different from her brothers and generally others too, which makes her character development even better.
Mycroft, for some reason, is overtly cold and harsh and even misogynistic, which is how the majority of men during that time period were. But for some reason, they made him seem like he hated Enola and despised her existence, he treated her like trash. To me, he was a monster. The scenes of him blatantly insulting her to her face and making her cry was not needed. I don't get why you have to make him like that to boost the character development of Enola. Even his chemistry with Sherlock was bad. Compared to other iterations of Mycroft, this one is by far the worst. He could still be a cold person who has only one perspective, just don't make him a women hater.
There was less mystery-solving from both Enola and Sherlock, which did not make a lot of sense. It was more drama and eventually just drama. The story of her going to the finishing school was not shown well. For a girl so smart and witty, the story made it seem like she was helpless and dumb. I mean, she was devastated that her brothers didn't seem to care about her, but that crushing of her spirit is... actually never mind, she didn't have any hope left and didn't want to do anything anymore, which makes sense. But the method of them doing this was underhanded and made it seem very sad and bad.
Overall, the movie is a decent adaptation and a good one. It stays partially true to the mystery angle but fails to make it successful.
Tag (2018)
A fun and nostalgic movie
This movie was very fun to watch, it was full of jokes and fun moments that kept happening, making the entire movie very exciting to watch.
The introduction for each character was fun, it easily set the tone of the movie. The introductions were like each person tagging each other, which flowed well and was absolutely hilarious to see friends who have grown up run around and try to tag each other.
The dialogue was well-written, it felt very real like how friends generally talk. Nowhere did the dialogue feel slow or out of place. The cinematography of the scenes where the others are trying to tag Jerry was absolutely perfect, and it felt like it was from the Kingsman movies with the fast but focused camera and the sharp shots, making it very cool and thrilling.
The casting is on point, Jon Hamm, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress, and Isla Fisher had the best chemistry, and all their scenes together were an absolute joy to watch. The energy and personality they bring out in their characters are unmatched.
Even the emotional hospital scene at the end was a beautiful ending showing that no matter what they will always be together. Them playing tag in the hospital and also including Isla Fisher in the game was just the cherry on the cake.
My only critique is that maybe Jerry could have been cast as someone else as he wasn't as funny compared to the other cast members, which made his character stand out and not in a good way. He felt very distant at times and not as connected. It could have been the writing or the casting. But, Jeremy Renner still did a phenomenal job, and he should definitely do more comedy movies, it was fun to see him in a more humorous role.
The compilation of the real people tagging them was a nice touch, and it was good to see they still kept it going after all the years.
There is not much that can be said about this movie, as words cannot describe the simplicity it brings out. It's a beautiful movie that highlights friendships and bonds of life. It's a must-watch as it's a silly movie that will make people of all ages laugh their hearts out.
Reminiscence (2021)
A decent neo-noir movie
The movie follows Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman) and Watts (Thandie Newton), who run a business that helps people relive their old memories using a system called reminiscence.
The movie does a good job of starting off by showing the tech involved, which is the machine. The beginning also establishes the tone of a neo-noir film with the lighting, color grading, and shots of the city, setting the tone effectively. The tone throughout the movie stays consistent, with no random shots of high-tech stuff or anything that might make it a complete romantic movie.
The story is decent but falls short occasionally. The concept of accessing someone's memories is not new; it's similar to Inception (2010), but the way they access and show it in this movie is unique and doesn't start to make you question the science of it.
The twist that Mae (Rebecca Ferguson) leaves Nick was unexpected; I didn't see that coming. After this happens, they show that he is constantly using the machine to see her in his memories, similar to how one might indulge in alcohol, which doesn't make it a ridiculous thing to do. The scene where he sees Mae involved with the mob made the story interesting.
As the story progresses, it becomes confusing to figure out who is working for whom, as relations that have been made in the past are already forgotten by the viewer because a lot of new information is shown. I had to check Wikipedia to crosscheck who is who.
The whole reveal of Mae tricking Nick was a good scene; it showed how she questioned her choices and made new choices to save others, which was a good amount of character development. Nick has terrible character development as they tell that he is a war veteran, but the dude cannot strategise properly, and the whole point of getting closure so he can stop using the machine is a failure as he still uses it, and they even show a shot of him getting old and still using it. Thandie Newton is good; the action sequence of her saving Nick is pretty cool, and generally, her dialogue is fine. Not a lot of screen time, so not much to say about her.
The movie becomes boring and the side characters are not helpful as you dont know who they are and what importance they are supposed to be as they only get revealed at the end and by that time you're bored. The dialogue becomes weak, Hugh Jackman is just ranting about how he wants to find her as he loves her, but he just keeps going in circles. Some of the dialogue is very cringe and hilarious to watch.
Overall, it's a movie that needs better writing. The actors and actresses acted the best they could, and it showed throughout. The neo-noir aspect is shown very less; would have loved to see more of it as it's a future setting. I wouldn't recommend this movie as it will leave you underwhelmed at the end.
Murder Mystery 2 (2023)
A failed attempt to be something refreshing.
The movie follows Nick and Audrey Spitz (Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston), who are a couple that get entangled in murders and solve them only after a lot of people have died.
There has to be a genre specifically for movies that are a comedy/parody version of other genres because this movie has very little comedy, and the murder-solving angle is a joke.
Adam and Jennifer have almost no chemistry in the movie, they are shown to be constantly fighting, and not agreeing which is not fun to see from a couple. They do not work together at all, and the majority of the time they seem to be on different pages. The rest of the cast is dull, no one really stands out, which makes it difficult to find out who the killer might be.
The movie has issues with predictability. After the first movie, the second movie became predictable as the killer who is shown to have such an elaborate plan and is pulling off crazy stunts is most definitely not the killer. The final killer reveal is anticlimactic as they do not have a unique personality that separates them from the other characters. The story of the Maharajah being kidnapped is very dumb, as a rich guy could not be kidnapped easily. Mark Strong had a decent role, but the script did him bad by giving him bad lines and a bad story. The pacing is very fast and does not give any background on the characters who are the possible suspects.
The film lacks the ability to allow for it to be a serious or a comedy film, with the jokes not landing due to the situation, and the serious situations are destroyed by jokes.
Adam and Jennifer are very talented actors, and it's sad seeing them in a movie that was written by people who think murder mystery means having fun and going on vacations.
If they were given a better script and backgrounds for the main and the side characters, it would definitely be more interesting to watch.
The movie would have been much better, for example, if Adam had an accident on the force that makes him use humor as a defense mechanism would ground his character and make him more likable rather than just being a goof that can barely do a thing without pissing anyone off and doesn't require luck. And for Jennifer, she is shown in both the movies to be smart and sharp, they could have built off of that and made her show off her skills more instead of making her look like a dumb blonde whose stuck with a useless husband.
Adam Sandler who is generally playing himself in all his movies feels very out of place in the film and does not seem to be happy. Jennifer Aniston is great actor and she also feels out of place in the movie.
The movie series could have been like the Knives Out series with the Husband-wife angle to it, but it fails to make the characters likable and unique.
The only thing I like in the movie was the Lamborghini and Colonel Ulanga (John Kani). He is the only character from both the movies that I like and who is funny to watch.
To conclude, the movie is somehow watchable at times, but at the end, it feels like a huge waste of time. The movie could have helped Netflix with their original movie fatigue, but somehow the fatigue continues.
Shutter Island (2010)
A true thriller.
There are certain movies that absolutely knock your socks off, and this movie is one of them.
The movie starts with US Marshals Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) as they are on a boat heading to a mental institution located on Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients.
The entire movie does a wonderful job maintaining a constant tone. It does not try to include out-of-place jokes or lines that have no meaning. Some of the scenes where there is no background sound, and it's just a character, bring out a thrilling aspect to watching the movie. The sound and cinematography are a work of art; the night scenes and dark scenes were able to bring a horror element to the story, and the sound just enhanced all scenes even more. The portrayal of Teddy losing his mind in scenes is shot very well and is able to show what is happening to him.
The movie does a great job of not only showing how far you can manipulate and gaslight someone just by using words like who and what. The majority of the movie is from Leo's perspective, and seeing it all unravel from his perspective that comes from his grief and trauma that is shown using scenes about his past when he attacked a Nazi concentration camp. The scenes of him talking to his wife Dolores Chanal (Michelle Williams), the scene with George Noyce (Jackie Haley), and his scenes with Mark Ruffalo are full of details and information that is unknowingly critical to the plot. The unraveling will eventually have you questioning if Leo is really being tricked or he is just being delusional. You might also get tricked with the amount of small twists and reveals. His acting is the best of the movie, and because he is given a lot to work with, it shows how much range he has and how brilliant he can be.
The climax of him realizing that he is actually a patient and not a US Marshal anymore was bonkers. The scene that revealed that his kids were killed by his wife, and him finding out and trying to save them and then him killing his wife. The whole sequence made my soul feel so heavy; it was gut-wrenching to watch. The mental illness of the wife was conveyed very easily but was able to show how complex her situation really was.
The story from the beginning is completely different from the ending. It is a true psychological thriller that has you on your feet at all times. To be able to guess the story, you have to pay sharp attention to the details and not take anything lightly as each of the scenes are all connected in one way or another. The phrases and the names all connect, and when it unravels throughout the movie, it is a shock that you do not expect.
I've realized that the key to watching movies made by older directors and just generally is to just sit and watch the movie. Your focus needs to be on the scene that is playing, and there should be no theorizing or predictions. Reason being you might end up in a rabbit hole of crazy thoughts that will ruin the experience.
The movie is one of the best thriller I have seen so far and a must-watch if you are a fan of this genre.
The Devil's Advocate (1997)
The devil really works in different ways.
The movie depicts quite well some of the evils in our world. I would definitely say this is a part-horror movie because of some of the gore scenes and the CGI of the devilish faces that look quite scary.
Mary Ann's (Charlize Theron) descent into madness and craziness was one of the most difficult things to see, the scenes of her seeing devilish faces and the scene in the church are just unnerving to watch. I initially thought that she was just going crazy and being too clingy and nervous, but turns out she was just constantly being gaslit and ignored. Pretty much all of her scenes will make you feel uncomfortable.
Plot-wise, the story is pretty stable, the law, the relationship with his wife, the cases. There are no huge time jumps between events making it so the story stays fresh and smooth.
The train scene where Milton is telling a stranger his partner is cheating on him and was able to convince the stranger to the kill partner and her lover somehow was perfect in the sense of tone and setting of the movie. It didn't feel out of place at all and was just calmly chaotic.
This rendition of the Devil/Satan is by far the best portrayal I have seen. The simple mind games, the charm, not having to use ridiculous techniques. The way he baits the temptation and slowly lures you in just makes sense. He just dangled the bait in front of Kevin, and he Kevin ate it right up. This is similar to Ares in Wonder Woman (2017) where they show that Ares doesn't do anything, he just shows the paths and lets the humans choose.
Al Pacino's acting is on another level. He has done yet another wonderful job of being charming yet being capable of tricking the other person so easily.
Keanu Reeves' southern accent was awful. It sounded very out of place. He kept shifting from regular to southern, making it tickle your ears weirdly.
The reveal of the relation of Milton and Lomax was not necessary. The story of Milton and Lomax having a mentor - mentee relationship was good and it got ruined by the father angle just a little bit.
The Milton monologue during the climax about why he did what he did felt out of place and too long. He just kept blabbering about Satan, God, and things in the Bible that made very little sense. The ending i.e. Lomax's death was surprising, and the following scene of the place bursting into flames and the devil transformations were actually quite good. The wall art behind Milton that comes to life is also good.
The end of the movie where they show that this was all in his mind, leading him to choose a different path is actually not bad. When they eventually reveal that the reporter is Satan i.e. Al Pacino, it is in a manner a full-circle moment where you realize that the devil will always find a way to get what he wants just by giving you what you think you want.
I'm not a spiritual person, but if someone were to ask me how the devil works? My answer would be the portrayal of the devil in this movie.
Scent of a Woman (1992)
An enchanting movie.
The movie was a wonderful mix of laughter and emotion. Al Pacino is such a brilliant actor, he truly is one of the best. His acting as a blind person was so convincing I forgot that he actually can see. His actions, his movements, the body language were so realistic that it could fool anyone.
The story is so heartwarming and is able to show how simple conversations and experiences can change you forever. The chemistry between Frank and Charlie feels so real. Charlie trying to connect while Frank avoids connection because he feels alone and feels like he has nothing to live for is an issue we all could have, And Charlie being able to convince Frank to face his circumstances instead of taking the easy way out is so touching.
The Ferrari scene was amazing as Frank is having the time of his life and really seems to be happy.
The Tango Scene was full of grace and elegance, I was smiling throughout the entire sequence.
The Hearing Scene was so powerful, Seeing Frank speak against the smug education institution felt so nice to hear. Even in today's world where the rich kids can get away with anything because of their parents and the lack of integrity of a school, It was good to see someone standing up for the small guy.
His line about being at crossroads was moving because he is right, We don't choose the right path because it is hard, it requires effort that only some people are willing to put in, and the people who put in the effort have the power to change the world.
These scenes that have a mixture of laughter, sorrow, and warmth that is able to connect, making it a thrill to watch. The writing is on point for each character and all the scenes.
Overall, words cannot truly define what a sight for sore eyes the film is. It is a captivating experience that you will not regret.
The Killer (2023)
It's decent.
The story is interesting because it is not your typical spy/assassin movie like the James Bond films or the Hitman films where each scene something exciting is happening. This movie takes it much slower, It's kind of like a day in the life of an assassin. The movie also feels very similar to The Terminal List (2022) in tone and style.
Throughout entire movie the thought process of The Killer is narrated. It's a unique style that expresses the situation by providing two mediums of expression i.e. The narration and the body language at the same time. The narration happens throughout the movie explaining what he is doing and why he is doing it. The narration also makes it sound like he is very meticulous and the best.
The thing i liked about the movie is that it shows how normal the assassin's life is and how he blends in. The regular routine and the just waiting for days for the target to show up and getting bored. The fact that it was so easy to enter into a places using tech from amazon, basic tools and slight of hand techniques like the rich person's apartment that somehow do not seem ridiculous. It is the fact of how simple it is to acquire tools and blend in to different places that puts an interesting perspective on today's technological world.
I also like how the places he is in keeps changing like from Paris to Dominican Republic to NOLA to Florida to Chicago and eventually Dominican Republic. It keeps the story more fast paced while also leaving enough time for the killer to do his work in these places keeping the story fresh.
Now the stuff that bothers me.
From what i'm reading about David Fincher's films is that most of his characters are a self-parody. Which drew me to the conclusion that if the killer is the best, then he wouldn't have missed the shot. I think the film might just plainly be about an assassin who thinks he is James Bond but let's his ego get the best of him leading him to be a guy who is not good at his job.
From what i'm reading on his films, most his characters are supposed to be for people who want to embody fictional characters but choose to embody only certain aspects that feel good making it a satirical hypocritical statement.
Another issue i had is that throughout the movie when he is killing everyone related to the attack on his girlfriend like the taxi driver that drove the attackers, the employer he works for, the attackers that attacked. But chooses not to kill the the guy who ordered the attack and instead let's him off with a warning. It kind of seems like the director and the writer are getting a kick out screwing with the viewer. I think it might have been some choice to suddenly bring character development to an assassin. It was weird as it was a deviation from the existing plot development.
Another thing which was weird was the scene with Tilda Swinton where she is eating, drinking and giving a monologue because she is trying to connect with the killer. The killer just stays silent for the most of it and ends up killing her at the end. The scene felt pointless and a waste of Tilda Swinton. Also the killer not talking when any of his victim's were talking was just funny, it's like they were scared by him but talking but only because he had a gun and not because he had a threatening personality.
It's still better compared Netflix's other attempts at making a spy/assassin movie like Red Notice (2021) and Heart of stone (2023).
The uneventful job of an assassin that is generally shown to be exciting makes this a unique movie. The story will make you realize after you watch it doesn't make sense, but up until that moment the movie feels intriguing, suspenseful and a thrill to watch which is why i highly recommend it.
The Creator (2023)
A failure to create a good plot.
The movie has so many plot-holes one might think that its Swiss Cheese.
The beginning sequence that shows a brief history of humans and AI robots like in performing daily tasks, surgery and eventually a turning point where LA is nuked and a war between US and AI robots begin. It is showed as an old 90's style infomercial. The way they show the sequence is able to hook the viewer on early because it is able to convey what the setting of the story is going to be like.
The NOMAD base design is pretty cool and unique, it reminds me of the star ships from Foundation(2021- ), It stands out and is able to make a statement that 'we are serious' which is good in setting the tone.
The CGI is also good, high tech items don't look ridiculous and some of the AI robots that have faces are uniquely designed showing the human and the robot part without it looking ugly.
Now the issues.
The movies seems to be stuck in the past by using cars that are just an 80's pickup truck with a high tech dashboard. Also the cars shown in the city are very very old. Some of the tech is very bulky and heavy for a human to carry. If it is indeed the future there should be some sort of minimalism with regards to weapon technology.
The plot is very cut up and gets irritating after a while due to the amount of negligence to details and the inability to use common sense. The plot line about Nirmata (Gemma Chan) who is creator of the weapon and who is of major importance to the AI robots is not shown enough which makes one wonder how important she really is. Eventually makes them think that she is a useless character. If she is actually such an important character that the US don't mind nuking cities and sacrificing their troops, show that early. It is only revealed towards the end to Joshua that Maya and Nirmata are the same.
There is a short flashback scene before the reveal of Nirmata of Joshua spying on Maya and trying to get close to her. They could've expanded on this scene and given more depth to the characters. Instead at random intervals in the movie they are showing the characters dancing on the beach and laughing which fails to be emotional as clarity of what the actual situation was is not clear.
The movie is so fast paced that it doesn't give enough time for the viewer to connect with a character. From what i have observed the movie has tried to show a that sometimes robots can have a bigger heart and emotional quotient than humans. The attempt to feel for the robots in their dying moments is butchered by random cuts to shots that have no existing and lasting impact.
The scene during which Joshua and the weapon are escaping makes no sense because first of all the convoy surrounding them should be heavily guarded and the since the escape sequence takes place in a tunnel there is not a lot of room to go without being boxed in. But somehow they make it to the airport and get a ticket and leave without being recognized which you think wouldn't happen as the military would issue warnings all over the city for escaped convicts.
Like a typical alien movie whose thinks the world is only USA, Show the other part of the part of the world and how they are affected to AI. They could show the positive and negative aspects of how humans have used AI in settings like war and education around the world. It is unclear if they are trying to show a future utopia or dystopia as they are showing only 2 perspectives that are USA and New Asia(fictional, consists of present day (2023) south-east Asia).
Despite the movie having issues, John David Washington did a phenomenal job, personally he was the only character that i liked seeing as he always brings is best and is able to show true emotion without making it feel un-earned
The movie has a strong beginning but falls off as the story goes on, it's an attempt at a modern take on AI that is worth considering to watch.
Assassin's Creed (2016)
a decent video game adaptation
The movie is quite good. It's an interesting story that involves fantasy and science that somehow seems to work wonderfully. The science and technology shown in the movie is quite interesting and looks quite cool like the Animus rig that can be compared to a flight rig used in movies to stimulate flight for a character. The action sequences are quite good, looks cool and doesn't look ridiculous , the camera doesn't do fast cuts during the scenes which is good allowing for the viewer to see the action.
A couple of issues i have are that Cal's backstory is not shown a lot. It was confusing like why are they choosing him or what is his relation to the Creed. It does get explained eventually but in the beginning it feels they are rushing the story and leaving important parts out, there is also a moment where i was confused by the Abstergo company who are capturing the assassins if they were the Creed or the Templar. I figured it out near the end.
Another issue i have is that certain dialogues are very weak . An instance is they have kind of mentioned that the Templar order is a powerful organization but they don't seem to show it quite well. The dialogue by Alan Rikkin (Jeremy Irons) about the Apple and how he wants to control and how the Templar wants to bring order doesn't fell very strong, the writing is quite weak. Even Sophia Rikkin (Marion Cotillard) who is the brains of the Animus operation said a phrase that was said by Dr. Oppenheimer which was "Now i am become death, the destroyer of worlds", it felt very out of place because they story and hasn't done a good enough job of establishing how powerful and deadly the Apple and the Templar are.
One thing that i found interesting about the movie is how there is nothing that explicitly says that the Creed or Templars are the good people or bad people. They are both shown to be operating in a sort of a gray area , they aren't showing subplots or things that make you choose a side which can be a good or confusing.
I haven't played the video game that the movie has been adapted from but now its definitely feels worth playing it.
The movie overall is quite good, not a lot of complex story lines it's quite simple and straightforward. The acting is fine, the sets and CGI are also done.
Chennai Express (2013)
A fun family entertainer
An absolute hit. It's full of laughter, emotion and action. It was a masala entertainer that delivers what you would expect from a Bollywood-South movie. It's a silly, time pass movie that has a lot of comedy and action making it fun to watch and also re-watch it whenever.
The action was amazing to watch and it's not a Rohit Shetty film unless there is a car flipping over.
Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone stunned every scene they were in, Their chemistry on screen was amazing.
The songs are catchy and full of energy, i have danced to the songs before but never got the chance to watch the movie. After watching the movie i can't believe it took me so long to watch it, but better late than never.
It's a harmless family entertainer in which you don't need to apply logic and can just watch it for the fun without having to go in depth.
Keeping the review short as there is not much that can be said about these light hearted and comedy movies because they are just made to have fun and not be analysed a lot. This is a must watch and it doesn't matter if you don't understand what the language, just put on the subtitles and enjoy. An absolute hit. It's full of laughter, emotion and action. Sharper (2023)
So much conning
TLDR : Just conners conning each other.
This was an interesting way of story telling, it kind of felt like the Percy Jackson : Gods of Olympus(Book, Author - Rick Riordan) series which i personally enjoyed.
The first sequence of the movie had me feeling the movie was going to be boring because i was so confused about the plot like why was did Sandra steal the money from Tom despite being his girlfriend. But it eventually the story became much better because things started clearing up.
Once the second sequence began things started making sense like why sandra conned tom and how Max plays a part in it and all the story was good now.
The third part that is Max was also interesting, seeing how he conned others and how he ends up making a big score with Madeline by tricking a billionare, but Madeline then ditches him for an even better and bigger score and then ratting Max to the police, The story becomes even better now.
The fourth part that is the story progression from Madeline's POV was also quite good, Julianne Moore stunned in every scene, her acting was one of the best of the movie. In this part they show that she has inherited billions of dollars which she gets when her husband who she conned dies and her stepson Tom just gets a trust, but she has control, The story has peaked here.
After this is where i felt it started to go downhill, They all are at a standoff, Madeline shoots Tom, to buy the silence of others she gives the money away to the trust. When she is escaping she realizes that the blood is fake realizing that Tom is not dead, He gets all the money now. She is left with nothing and Tom rekindles the relationship with Sandra, The story is now bad.
The part i didn't like was Tom getting everything in the end, I'm not saying Madeline and Max should have gotten the money but Tom's character felt so weak, like boo hoo you got scammed that's your fault, don't become a depressed fellow. Sandra was alright but she had no real value to the story apart from being a pawn as she had not major story involvement.
Since the movie shows the characters interacting 95% of the time with each other they need to be made integral by having them be more involved, there where side characters like Tipsy(Phillip Johnson Richardson) and Richard Hobbes(John Lithgow), that despite being a side character had a much bigger involvement that someone like Sandra.
The story was quite good and was fun to watch, the amount of twists were so interesting and i don't think anyone could have figured the ending. It is a fun thrill to watch until the climax, it's able to keep the viewer engaged and thinking what the next twist is going to be.
Mamma Mia! (2008)
A fun, lovely movie
Meryl Streep is such a delight to watch absolutely loved her in The Devil Wears Prada(2006) and Only Murders in the Building season 3(2023). The way she just jumps into song and dance is so fun to see, it feels like something out a bollywood movie, all the characters joining in and making it a spectacle is so fun to watch.
The story is a such a wonderful depiction of a mother-daughter relationship, the song 'Slipping through my fingers(ABBA)' felt so emotional.
The songs were very recognizable and fun to sing along with. The 3 fathers were just pure comedy and even the Donna's(Meryl Streep) friends.
Small issues like Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) choosing not to tell her mother earlier that she was the one who invited the men felt bad because her mother was just all over the place and putting more tension on her was weird.
Another thing that felt weird was Sam proposing in the end.
There were a lot of things that felt out of place and i think it is because it is adapted from a musical some things might have got lost in translation.
I'm keeping the review short because i honestly can't find the words to describe it and i mean it in a good way. The movie was a mix of comedy and its just a chick flick that's fun to watch.
Wall Street (1987)
Money, Money, Money.
I personally love movies about finance, trading; essentially the behind the scenes of many of the big organizations that run the world wether its sports or finance.
I absolutely love some of the movies and TV shows like Wolf of Wall Street (2013), The Big Short (2015), Moneyball (2011), Billions (TV 2016-2023) and Ballers (TV 2015-2019).
Wall street is now added to the list, a brilliant story that so depicts the rise and fall of Bud Fox(Charlie Sheen), In a way i kind of feel sad for him because all he wanted was to be successful but along the path to success he lost his morals.
Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) was such a charming character, it was an absolute delight to see him.
Although this movie came out decades before i was born and even the world trade center wasn't there anymore when i was born, it is so amazing to me to see the stock market work with like pen and paper and essentially without technology.
This movie was fun to watch and I highly recommend it if you're interested in these types of movies.
Neeyat (2023)
A decent attempt at a Bollywood murder mystery.
The movie has good things and bad things, First the bad stuff.
The movie lacked the ability to make me wonder who the killer might be by useless information and motives that lead nowhere, as the story progresses i thought that maybe its a Murder on the Orient Express(Agatha Christie) situation, but i stopped thinking about it because it got confusing in between with all the side character reveals.
The finding of clues was done well but things that are going through the mind of the detective are not shown to the viewer, leading the viewer to somehow just accept that it happened.
The lighting for all the dark scenes were horrible, even after increasing brightness and other features i could barely see whats going on.
The story took too much time focusing on certain characters.
While its supposed to be a murder mystery with things happening every couple of minutes, every couple of minutes only drama is happening.
Now the good parts.
The twists at the end that reveals Ashish kapoor wasn't dead but was faking his death so he can escape, The fact that Vidya Balan is not the real detective but a lover of one of the deceased who died due to the fraud work of Ashish Kapoor and wanted to expose him before he made any sneaky plays, That was good in my opinion, i did not see that coming at all and was a surprisingly unique twist to a classic murder mystery.
The sets were unique and looked modern classic, which was able to set the tone of the movie.
The songs, the background tracks were well placed and well timed.
Some of the story lines were smart and well placed to be able to build enough suspicion towards a character.
The movie has decent acting by all the cast, no one really stands out or no one has a quirk or a characteristic quality that separates them making the viewer think they might be the killer, they are all written to be rich, entitled, humans which when shown in movies is always makes the viewers hate them.
The movie is a good attempt at a Bollywood version of a murder mystery and we definitely need to see more new Bollywood murder mysteries, but with Bollyoood movies there always has to be some drama which is one of the reasons the movie felt boring and eventually makes you like it less.
Its a fun one time watch, there are interesting parts but there are also boring parts.
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Bang, Bang Bang!!
The way the characters were written is so wonderful, each has an interesting backstory. With Tarantino's non linear way to story telling the movie kept you on your feet in a way that would make you wonder who is the rat. I personally thought that it would be Mr. White(Harvey Keitel), but i wasn't disappointed when it was revealed that Mr. Orange(Tim Roth) was the rat because the story just got better.
Even though this is a heist movie, the movie focuses more on the aftermath and the before of the heist, that is what makes this movie so good. The random talks of about tipping, racial issues, just random stuff that makes it so fun to watch.
Mr. Blonde(Michael Madsen) was an absolute psycho, the man skinned and cut off the cop's ear just for some fun. Mr Pink(Steve Buscemi) talking about his bad luck and ending up getting shot(i think) was hilarious, Mr. White supporting Mr. Orange before and after he revealed he was the informant was such a thrill to watch.
These characteristics are written in such a unique way that makes the movie fun to watch.
The final scene where Joe(Lawrence Tierney), Eddie(Chris Penn) and Mr. White end shooting each other was absolutely hilarious to see not gonna lie.
The movie is an absolute banger and a must watch, it's fun and its got thrill. 10/10.
Scarface (1983)
Say hello to my review
WOW, This movie was an absolute knock out the park, i heard that the movie was good but it is just on another level, The acting, the story its full of raw emotion. Al Pacino absolutely killed it. Every scene was shot perfectly, The score to support the feeling was made so wonderfully.
I absolutely love his honest and will to do attitude, i feel like that's what led him to not only become powerful person but also becoming the reason of losing his loved ones and eventually his death.
The movie is wonderfully well written and absolute pleasure to watch. Feel sad for Manny(Steven Bauer), Gina(Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer), none of them deserved what happened to them. I absolutely loved seeing the scenes where Al Pacino goes crazy and destroys everything.
There is not much i can write about this movie becuase words cannot do justice to praise this piece of art. Go and watch the movie asap, the runtime might look long but it is an absolute thrill and fun to watch movie.
Infinite (2021)
infinitely
The plot was interesting in the beginning with the whole past lives things and Mark Wahlberg suddenly having amazing skills, but the story became boring and stopped making sense after a while, My eyes were barely able to stay awake, i thought it was tiredness but it's the movie.
There are unnecessary plot points like being able to store someone's life, making them alive but not really, the useless tech about bringing memories back that is really just a drowning machine. Also why does the bomb have to be on a plane if it is going to destroy the entire earth anyway.
The acting is fine, the action scenes were pretty good actually, the camera angles and the sharp cuts were interesting to watch and well done, the CGI was good especially related to all the high-tech stuff, The Aston Martin vantage just looked cool. The sets were made wonderfully and looked good,
I guess the movie got messed up due to the pandemic but i still don't think it would have been a success.
Its a sci-fi movie that would not be fun to watch so do not watch it at all.
