Only Murders in the Building: Double Time (2021)
Too bad they swung the pendulum back
Suddenly they act like they got everything wrong and want to crawl in a hole?
They got 2 out of 3 very big things right.
That is amazing.
After 9 well crafted episodes - this one made me sad.
Still good though.
Just not at the high bar the other episodes set.
Only Murders in the Building: The Boy from 6B (2021)
Fantastic storytelling
The episode is amazing.
The entire arc of the series is so well done. Keeps the audience engaged - story moves along while introducing new concepts.
Brings back hope for the craft.
Storytelling, performance, music, sound, directing, editing, camera... it all comes together.
El Internado: Las Cumbres (2021)
So close to be being a must watch - but not quite
Having watched seasons 1 and 2 I find it enjoyable to watch.
Season 1 was almost great but the last two episodes sent it back to barely tolerable.
You invest a ton of time to have very little resolved and a huge cliffhanger.
Season 2 had some really interesting concepts that they weave together.
But the love drama and flip flopping are a total joke and wasted scenes - simple no reason for it.
Like "Team America" "I will never die" moments over and over again.
Writers withholding information that people would lever do. That is way overused storytelling technique. Very lazy.
The moments of "building tension" are a joke. Those could almost all be cut.
They are invincible, Establishing a dengerious situation is enough. Cutting back 2 or three times "Oh gosh! Will they escape?!"
Yes... yes they will. Get back to the story.
Or the kids sneaking through the halls - they NEVER get caught.
They can roam anywhere at anytime - keys to everything - any room - pick up guns and drugs or whatever. No problem.
After a few episodes of this you just ignore the "sneaking around" moments.
The long scenes trying to build tension are simply a waste of time.
Talking of time - they pay no attention to it.
One scene a character is overdosing - next scene (presumably 30 minutes later) they are all cleaned up and running through the woods.
So many examples to bother listing.
Just know they are invincible (of course they are) they heal as fast as needed to move the story along.
And the story IS interesting,
Corporate greed, mystical legends, conflicts of identity and the standard teen trope of stupid adults underestimating the super smart kids.
Somehow it all works nicely together.
But then the most unsatisfactory endings possible.
It looked all queued up to have closure of at least one or two of the over TEN arcs we are required to track.
Even down to the last scene where they bust open two arcs almost closed.
It's just treating the audience as idiots.
They must have gotten the email renewing for a new season on the last day of shooting and lazily just decided to queue up another season of the same arcs.
Fun watch - but don't expect closure.
The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
1 hour 20 min setup a potential positive lesson..
... of empathy and helping someone through a tough time. But then..
Gaslighting bro cries and ignoring Mom point out how it's just the girl's problem and she's all better in the last 5 mins after confirming to everyone screwing her over.
It was all well acted.
Woody's character was great.
Sense8 (2015)
Really great concept, really needs a script editor
What a cool concept for a show - but like a many Netflix shows great ideas slowly implemented. The various locations are fun and you can feel that they spend lots of time and energy to capture the setting and dynamics for each location. The locations play a really great part of the stories. This and the underlying concept make this a special show. Unfortunately, it takes FOREVER to establish the baseline plot (like 7 episodes type of forever). The first several (3) episodes jump around so confusingly and fast it's hard to establish who are the 8 we should care about since the "significant others" and surrounding characters are also introduced with similar screen time (so you are trying to parse 20+ characters right away). Then Episode 8 happens and life is good. Ah HA! They are starting to get somewhere. Then Episode 9 happens and we were back to secondary and tertiary sub plots that (from what I could tell) are just filler to stretch the episode count. Tons of random sex scenes, full body shots for no apparent reason (other then it's Netfilx, so why not) and a 10 minute firework montage with all the cliché's in full effect shown for each character. Yikes. give it a freak'n rest. There is no need to further develop character at this point so that episode puts a brake on the plot until Episode 11. Another issue. The characters do not react as people would. At first they do. All feeling a bit crazy and questioning things. Excellent exploration, but then when things start to come together for them they just keep on like it's no big deal. Try to maintain their jobs and just carry on as if it's just a side thing. REALLY?! Actual people would organize a bit more, or talk to each other to find out what the hell is going on. In one scene two people just begin to figure out what is happening to them and suddenly one of the charters says "I guess I should goto bed... It's late." Sorry no. That would not happen. Who can think about sleep when your world was just majorly rocked. There are other methods to conceal the development of the storyline. Having a character on the verge of a major life shift be too tired to continue a casual conversation... not one of them. Save yourself a TON of time and watch Episode 1,3,8,11,12 - You'll be entertained informed and -if they have a Season 2 - ready for something that hopefully moves along a bit faster.
