Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)
Pretty Good Flick
One second I was laughing, the next I'm jumping out of my seat. When I first heard about this movie, I thought it sounded stupid and wouldn't have paid the price of admission if it weren't for the insistence of a friend. Boy was I glad I saw this movie. Very entertaining!! And to see it at the gorgeous Castro Theater only added to the fun.
Can't Stop the Music (1980)
My Time Is Now...
This movie is horrible yet I can't stop watching it. I make my friends watch it just so they can see how bad it is. Steve Guttenberg thrusting his fist in the air over his new found freedom from being a shleper salesman while on roller skates is classic. Tammy Grimes trapped in a phonebooth because her fingernail is stuck in the dial still cracks me up. This is the best of the worst, you must see it to believe it. I recently bought the DVD, I couldn't help myself.
Rat Race (2001)
Very Funny
The gags fall flat at the beginning, mostly because we already saw them in the preview, but if you hang on until the race begins it turn into a very funny screwball comedy that doesn't let up. It least it didn't for me. Oh, and there's no character development, the writer's were too busy throwing gags at us. Go and enjoy, you can be intelligent and still laugh at silly stuff.
Sordid Lives (2000)
Cheesy is right
I live in the heart of the Castro in San Francisco and neither me nor my friends got the humor of this movie. The only reason I went to see it was to see Olivia as an ex-con and not even her presence could keep me interested. My partner who was raised in Katy, TX mentioned it was Texan humor and it probably did very well there but we in the Castro just didn't get it.
The Mexican (2001)
A Matter of Personal Taste
I enjoyed this movie. I thought it was a great change of pace for Brad and Julia. On the other hand, about half way through my partner found Julia annoying and told me he'd meet me at home. So if you like Brad and Julia, and enjoy romantic comedies with a dark side, you should enjoy The Mexican.
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000)
An enjoyable rental
If you enjoy Rocky and Bullwinkle then you should get a kick out of this movie. It's silly and begins sort of shakey but there is plenty of fun stuff and cameos to keep you entertained for an hour and a half. It's worth the price of a rental and probably plays better on a small screen. I give it a 6 out of 10 because it held my attention.
The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1975)
I'm giving it a 9
I just love this movie. Of course it total juvenile humor but that's what I was when I first saw it. I remember my Mom dropping me and a friend off at the theater to see it and she wasn't coming back for hours because it was billed as a double feature, but the paper was wrong and we had to sit through it twice. I catch it on cable every now and then and it still cracks me up.
Who's That Girl (1987)
Surprisingly Funny
There was so much bad press when this movie was released that I avoided it with all cost. Just the other day I was in a video store that was showing it over their monitors and the few minutes I caught seemed really funny so I rented it. To my surprise, I thought this was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I mean it's a completely silly, screwball comedy, just what I would expect from such a movie. I don't get why most people hated it, I laughed from beginning to end. I am a big fan of Bringing Up Baby and What's Up Doc and in my humble opinion this fits right in with those two. As for Madonna, I'm a fan of her music, especially the last two CD's but feel she is sort of stiff on screen. I feel her best performances were in Evita and A League of Their Own and I would now add Who's that Girl? to this list. She comes across very natural and you can tell she's having a blast with this character. Give this movie a chance. Most stores rent it for a buck and if you really don't like then turn it off, but don't be surprised if you find yourself viewing a guilty pleasure.
Dark Journey (1937)
Complex, Confusing
I don't know why it is but spy movies always confuse me, especially if the story takes place during WW1 or WW2 (Dark Journey takes place during WW1). The more complex the story the more time I spent hitting the rewind button trying to figure out what's going on. This movie falls into that category and to make it even more confusing it involves double spies. Don't worry that is not a spoiler, it says it on the video box but that didn't help me understand what's taking place. Of course this might have something to do with my age and not being born until after those wars took place. It also doesn't help that history wasn't my strong point in school so I really don't know whole lot of specifics about the wars. The movie looked great, very well done. I just couldn't follow it which is too bad because it really looks like a good movie.
