The Great Dictator (1940)
A digitally remastered version so current that it could have been shot yesterday.
This little "chef d'oeuvre' should be in everyone's filmotheque. When you think that this was filmed in 1940, it makes you think. Today's politicians speaches have not changed all that much in certain parts of the world.
But go see the movie, it is worth it.
Gangs of New York (2002)
Should have been tailored down to 190 minutes
Trusting the reviews, I went to see this movie expecting a lot; I should have known, this is always dangerous. I felt it was way too long; I had the impression I was attending a play in a theater. It just did not carry me along. I kept looking at my watch to see how much time was left. In a few accasions during the show, I felt I was watching a remake of some Sergio Leone movie. Long trench coats, real up-close close-ups, endless agony in the dust. One word summary: deception.
Clandestins (1997)
Tight as if you were in the container with the stowaways
Maybe not a great film but still a very good movie. Actors are very good and you sure can feel the tension building as the "cruise" drags out. Very sad situation rendered very realistically by the authors and actors.
Thirteen Days (2000)
A faithful reminder of a stressful two weeks
From the beginning of the movie, even though you know the ending, you will be captivated by the events going on. Characters are credible, and they even look like the real ones. Dialogs faithfully denote the tensions existing at the White House during the crisis. This is a good movie for those interested in key historical events.
Svadba (2000)
The Russian way of living or surviving
As a North American who spent three months in Russia in 1995, all I can say is that this movie is a true reflection of what I experienced while I was there. The atmosphere of the film is true to life. If ones wants to get the feeling of a Russian party, this is it. Even though people don't have much to live on, they are ready to chip in and to share everything they have. This is not a comedy, this is a social study on life in Russia in 2000, but it is enjoyable.
Une liaison pornographique (1999)
The kind of title that does not necessarily rely to this kind of movie.
The title does not reflect the atmosphere of the movie. It is first of all an excellent performance by two very good actors. Nathalie's frankness is sublime and Sergi's mimic is overwhelming. This is not a funny movie, but I smiled all the way through. I thought the dialogs were very accurate and true to life. This is not an American movie! If you like something different, go see it.
Propaganda (1999)
Happiness does not have to be an American movie
This Turkish film is a about human relations in a newly divided town where a military officer is made the new custom officer after completing his service. You will see how the town gets divided when the border fence is changed and made to pass through the town. I smiled (and laughed) all the way through this beautiful and touching story. Beautiful and touching people in a rugged country lost in the middle of nowhere. This a story depicting a conflict between friendship and bureaucracy where the families are physically separated by the new border. This film needs to be watched with subtitles (not translated) so you can perceive all its flavor.
