7 years ago, the whole world was amazed by the story about a group of robbers who were implementing a multi-day assault on the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid. Later Money Heist became the most-watched non-English-language series on Netflix, proving that people’s interest in heist flicks and exploration of criminals’ minds is never-ending.
The platform’s new project goes further in this respect, as instead of depicting fictional robbers it will focus on a real-life bandit, even though his crimes were cinematic and spectacular enough to be developed by Netflix’s screenwriters.
Back in the 1990s, there was a drug dealer who was always striving for more than his business was making for him. After seeing Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves’ Point Break (1991), a crime film that followed the exploits of the bank robbers’ leader, he came up with an idea to make money any other way.

Here we go again. In recent years, Mel Gibson’s found himself stuck in a never-ending series of Dtv-style action thrillers, similar to the kind of fare Bruce Willis churned out before his retirement. Along with his contemporaries like John Travolta, John Cusack and many others, Gibson seems totally stuck in a rut, with virtually all of these films (most of which he only has minor roles in) going totally unnoticed. Has anyone seen Panama, Agent Game, On the Line, Confidential Informant, Desperation Road, Dangerous or Force of Nature? There have been some bright spots, such as the solid Bandit (a movie he was proud of when I interviewed him) or Fatman, but for the most part, Gibson’s career as an actor in mainstream movies seems limited to this kind of fare, which is a shame.
Nevertheless, he’s still out there cranking out VOD movies, with Boneyard being the latest.

U.S. writer-director Terry Gilliam had the crowd in stitches throughout his masterclass at the Lumière Film Festival, where he presented the restored version of his 1995 cult movie “12 Monkeys.”
The former Monty Python member, whose career as a director started with the 1975 satirical comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” said that while he was keen to approach difficult subjects, he had learnt from Mary Poppins the secret of success.
“She taught me that the sugar helps the medicine go down,” he quipped, to the audience’s delight.
On a more serious note, Gilliam said that his main goal as a filmmaker was “to make films that make you think about the world in a different way.”
Rejecting the way reality is presented by the media, which he described as “too limited,” Gilliam said it could be “more fascinating, bizarre and surprising.”

As Braveheart’s William Wallace once put it, “Every man dies, not every man truly lives.” And has a man truly lived until Mel Gibson has bailed him out of a jam on the side of the road in the pitch black of night? In a viral video, the star is seen as a true road warrior, helping a citizen air up his tire in an act that has garnered praise for Gibson. While the video has been around for well over a year, new exposure has helped shed a new light on Mel Gibson – no, really, he needs you to shine a light on the pressure gauge for him.
The video, which is embedded below, finds the stranded man askingMel Gibson, “Why are you alone?” The Academy Award-winning actor shrugs his shoulders and responds, “Why are you?” The fella in distress replies, “I am alone because I am not famous,...

Growing up in the 80s it was a special time for kids who loved cars. Series like Magnum Pi, Knight Rider, and The A-Team all had an iconic vehicle that was a centerpiece of the series and epitomized the spirit of the show. But perhaps none was as iconic and memorable as the car at the heart of this episode, The General Lee.
The orange painted muscle car was the chariot of Bo and Luke, the two modern day Robin Hoods Aka The Duke Boys. In this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten we’re going climb through the window and get behind the wheel of The General as we revisit The Dukes of Hazzard.

Mel Gibson and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson are toplining Boneyard, an indie crime-thriller that has begun shooting in Las Vegas.
Brian Van Holt, who starred opposite Kate McKinnon in limited series Jo vs. Carole, is also starring in the feature whose cast includes Nora Zehetner (The Right Stuff). Co-starring is Michael Sirow, most recently seen in SXSW movie The Wrath Of Becky.
Colin Bates, who produced the Halle Berry thriller Kidnap and the Arnold Schwarzenegger zombie drama Maggie, is producing the hot indie with Vincent McDaniel.
Inspired by true events, Boneyard tells of an FBI special agent, played by Gibson, who along with the Albuquerque police department, is hunting for a serial killer nicknamed The Bone Collector. The chief of police and one of his officers, however, have a contrary view of the manhunt, believing someone in their own department may be the killer.
Jackson is playing the chief while Van Holt plays the officer who is connected to the case through a missing niece.

Indian filmmaker Subhrajit Mitra’s latest venture “Bandit Queen of Bengal” (aka “Devi Chowdhurani”) will start principal photography in the final quarter of the year.
The film is based on Mitra’s own research into the the advent and invasion of the British East India Company in India, the battles of Plassey (1757) and Buxar (1764), the great Bengal famine of 1770, the Sannyasi and Fakir rebellion (1770-77) and Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s 1884 Bengali-language novel “Devi Chowdhurani,” which features a female freedom fighter protagonist.
The film will follow the journey of a villager who eventually becomes the first Indian woman freedom fighter. It will also tell the story of the Hindu monks who had no other option but to take up arms against their British colonial rulers to save the country and their people. It was the first armed revolution by the Indians, led by Bhavani Charan Pathak, against the British East India Company.

Josh Duhamel charms as ‘flying bandit’ Gilbert Galvan, who pulled off nearly 60 robberies across Canada, but this light-hearted retelling lacks any insight
Bandit is one of those true-crime films where you come away with the impression that the film-makers have spent a bit too long hanging out with their subject, sitting in smoky bars listening to tall tales about the good ol’ bad days. It’s sincere enough but tells an utterly hokey and indulgent story about armed robber Gilbert Galvan, who went on a stick-up spree across Canada in the 1980s, pulling off nearly 60 robberies in three years targeting banks and jewellers. Newspapers called him “the flying bandit”.
The film paints Galvan’s crimes as more or less victimless – repeatedly showing what a polite and cordial bank robber he is, never firing a gun. It’s a glossy old-fashioned movie, mixing a bit of action with tongue-in-cheek comedy. Josh...

“Halloween Ends” just opened in theaters, while also being made available on Universal’s streaming platform Peacock, and the response has been divisive to say the least.
The third chapter of the new trilogy (once again directed by David Gordon Green and starring Jamie Lee Curtis) made 41.3 million at the box office opening weekend, a good number for sure but lower than the studio and box office prognosticators were predicting. Critically, the results were just as middling. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie pulled down a 41 critics score, with an audience score of 57. But “Halloween Ends” took chances; it’s not perfect but it’s more interesting and idiosyncratic than most run-of-the-mill horror fare.
Instead of the nonstop bloodbath of previous entry “Halloween Kills,” “Halloween Ends” takes a more nuanced, mature approach to the subject matter, investing time in the relationship between Laurie’s granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) and her new...

Netflix’s highly touted and well publicized (perhaps too well) Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde” dropped off its top 10 movie chart after only eight days, only three of those at number one. This stunning result reaffirms the suspicion that, as much as subscribers gravitate to originals, top directors and awards attention don’t provide a leg up when it comes to viewer interest.
There can be exceptions and it’s likely that “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will be one of them. Rian Johnson’s film will have the benefit of its predecessor, a theatrical hit, as well as its cast and strong reviews..
Netflix originals can thrive, but it’s usually for the short term. The current chart has three originals among the top five and these films received a fraction of the “Blonde” attention. It suggests that while viewers may crave social buzz about movies, that’s not...

Few Netflix originals have received as much advance press and social media attention than Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” his adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel about Marilyn Monroe starring Ana de Armas. It would have been surprising had it not immediately risen to #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list — and it did. That lasted three days.
Facing critical backlash and less-than-stellar word of mouth, it’s now at #3. To add to the ignominy, what replaced it was the Gerard Butler thriller “Last Seen Alive,” which had a brief run as a direct-to-vod release in May.
In recent weeks, Netflix originals “Lou,” “End of the Road,” “Me Time,” Day Shift,” and “Look Both Ways” all spent more time atop its movie-watching chart. Some had stars like Kevin Hart, Mark Wahlberg, Queen Latifah, and Jamie Foxx to elevate them. De Armas is not the same boldface name, but her credits include “Knives Out,...

Have you ever heard about “The Flying Bandit?” Gilbert Galvan Jr. was a career criminal who managed to – according to the film – rob 59 banks without hurting a single soul. It’s a fascinating story, and now, this tale is featured in the excellent and fun flick, Bandit. The film stars Josh Duhamel as Gilbert, and he is exceptional in the role. The same can be said for the rest of the cast which includes Elisha Cuthbert, Nestor Carbonell, and Mel Gibson. Directed by Allan Ungar and written by Kraig Wenman, this entertaining feature is fast paced, funny, and utterly engaging. There’s nothing like walking into a movie with little knowledge, and coming out a massive fan.
Two days ago, we sat down with Duhamel, Cuthbert, Carbonell, and Ungar to discuss their latest. It was a real treat for me personally, as Josh was one of the first people I interviewed back in Transformers days.

Earlier this week, I got to do what I always considered one of my bucket list interviews – Mel Gibson. As a child of the eighties, I watched his movies repeatedly. The Lethal Weapon series, the Mad Max movies, Braveheart, and even stuff like Forever Young and Bird on a Wire were constantly on in my household. Gibson was the man, and I’m still a massive fan of his, so when I got the opportunity to speak to him about a new movie he’s in called Bandit (read my review), in which he plays the mobbed-up mentor of Josh Duhamel’s Gilbert Galvan, a real-life bank-robber from Canada, I leapt at the chance.
Over the last few days, we teased his thoughts on Lethal Weapon 5 and his story about almost playing James Bond, but now, without further delay, is the whole interview:

Plot: The true story of Canada’s notorious “Flying Bandit” Gilbert Galvan Jr (Josh Duhamel). A jail escapee from the U.S, Galvan makes his way to Canada and attempts to go straight. But, once he falls in love with a local woman (Elisha Cuthbert Jr) and discovers he has a baby on the way, he turns to bank robbery to make ends meet. To his amazement, he has a natural, uncanny gift for being able to knock over banks without injuring anyone, and once he gets financing from a local tough guy (Mel Gibson), the sky is the limit. For a while anyway…

Yesterday, I posted an excerpt from a recent interview I did with Mel Gibson for his new movie, Bandit, where he optimistically discussed the status of Lethal Weapon 5. The full transcript of the interview will be up tomorrow, but here’s another tease. Everyone knows that at one point, Mel Gibson was offered the role of James Bond, and in my interview, the actor himself explained why he turned it down.
This came about when discussing his new film Bandit, in which Josh Duhamel plays notorious Canadian bank robber Gilbert Galvan Jr. I noted to Gibson that I thought Duhamel was incredible in the movie, but that it’s very different from the usual, more lightweight, romantic roles he gets. Gibson noted that sometimes if someone excels in a genre, they get pigeon-holed, with him fondly remembering Sean Connery and how he couldn’t escape James Bond until he did...

It isn’t every day that you get to speak to one of your childhood heroes on the phone, but that’s precisely what happened to me recently when given the opportunity to interview the one and only Mel Gibson. The legendary star is out promoting a movie he’s in called Bandit, which tells the true story of bank robber Gilbert Galvan Jr (played by Josh Duhamel), who, in the 80s, robbed 59 banks all over Canada with little more than a handful of disguises and some frequent flyer miles. Gibson plays a shady character named Tommy Kay who helps fund his caper; in it, he seems to be having the time of his life. But in what Canadian director Allan Ungar claims is a first, he had to re-create 1980s Ottawa, Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg and Edmonton in modern-day Georgia to shoot his bank robber drama Bandit, which stars Josh Duhamel, Elisha Cuthbert, Mel Gibson and Néstor Carbonell.
“In certain parts of the U.S., people are very patriotic. And so it was very bizarre for some of the locals to be walking down Main Street and see Canadian flags everywhere,” Ungar tells The Hollywood Reporter ahead of Bandit getting a theatrical release on around 100 North American screens starting this Friday.
Ungar had originally been set to shoot in Canada his true-life movie about American Gilbert Galvan Jr.

“Bandit” may be, as it proudly declares up front, based on a true story. But it’s hard to believe the titular antihero was quite as charming as the guy playing him.
Josh Duhamel is Robert Whiteman — or, technically, Gilbert Galvan Jr., as he’s known before he escapes a Michigan jail and flees to Ontario in 1985. He becomes Whiteman when he buys a homeless man’s ID, so he can get a job selling ice cream. But when he’s fired, he needs a new gig fast. Unfortunately, even in Canada it’s tough to find work as a wanted convict.
So Robert starts looking around for ways to make some easy money. Actually, make that fast money. Canadian banks, he learns while robbing them, have very little security, and he’s in and out in minutes. But it’s definitely work, what with the careful planning, the costumes and prosthetics,...

By many accounts, Halo Infinite is an overall fantastic, if notably flawed, game. Gamers and critics alike hailed the game’s campaign as a return to greatness, especially after the disappointment that was Halo 5: Guardians. However, despite some overall improvements, Halo Infinite shipped incomplete, and its developers promised that those missing features would eventually be patched in. Well, you know what they say: Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
When 343 Industries announced Halo Infinite’s Season 2, the company provided a roadmap that included estimated dates for legacy/missing features such as the Forge and campaign co-op. Recently, 343 updated its timeline with new release dates for most of those features, but a few things got lost in the process. According to the latest Halo Infinite update video, the Forge and online campaign co-op will launch side-by-side on November 8. Unfortunately, all work on the game’s previously promised...
